Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to characterize and discuss the collaborative network formed by researchers that published about services in the top journals in Operations, Marketing, and Human Resources Management, and provide further comparison with major Service journals.Design/methodology/approach – The method used was designed documentary research using papers published in the top three relevant international journals specific to Operations, Marketing, and Human Resources from 1995 to 2010. Papers were selected using a search of the ABI/Inform Global (Proquest) database on the word “service” in the title, abstract, or keywords. Additionally, it included two major Service journals. A total of 1,481 papers and 2,457 authors composed the Social Network Analysis (SNA).Findings – The co‐authorship network revealed that the social structure is highly fragmented. However, its main component can be classified as “small world”, indicating that authors are connected to others outside their group through...

Transport management is traditionally addressed in the literature as a process with its flow contextualized in its operating performance and costs. In this paper, transport is considered as service management, seeking to understand the behavioral aspects of the demand of shippers. We conducted a survey of 400 small and medium-sized Brazilian industrial shippers. The differentiation of services, according to the customers, was obtained by Factor Analysis. The results indicated that the constructs of transport services most valued by shippers were, in order, Security, Reliability, Time, Price, Service for the special needs of customers and Customer Relations, i.e., the shippers showed greater interest in the effectiveness of service. Thus, shippers expect the performance of transport in itself to strengthen the relationship with their customers. Additionally, we detected differences in priorities, according to the groups targeted by the characteristics of customers. The importance attached to the constructs of Security and Reliability can also help understand why many companies maintain their own fleet or establish contracts for the transport of their products.

This work seeks to assess the outsourcing process adopted by Philips for producing LCD televisions. The authors used the Resource-based Theory and the Transaction Cost Theory for analyzing the case. Based on industry data and interviews with ten of the company’s senior executives, this study sought to understand how the decision making process was carried out and how it affected the company’s activities in the field of LCD televisions. Philips has lost its competitiveness in the Brazilian market – it went from being the leader in 2006 to fourth place in 2009, both as far as regards its sales volume and value. The executives pointed out that the LCD panel is an important resource and that its supply by third parties represented a high transaction cost. The results illustrate the complementarity that exists between the RBT and TCT theories in a competitive environment that has few players.

Few studies approach supply chain relationships from the perspective of integration with customers and suppliers at the same time. In this paper the effects of both relational and structural embeddedness with suppliers and buyers on operational performance were evaluated in terms of productivity and quality. Hypotheses were tested by hierarchical linear regression models (OLS models) with a sample of Brazilian furniture firms. The results showed that relational embeddedness alone has positive effect only on quality, and paradoxically, higher levels of relational embeddedness lead to a reduction of the effect of structural embeddedness. One implication of the results involves the recognition that higher levels of trust and cooperation do not always lead to more benefits or greater levels of operational performance. If isolated from other governance mechanisms, these can even lead to the loss of one of the parties, reinforcing the idea that relational and structural embeddedness are complementary governance mechanisms.

This paper aims to analyze structural and relational embeddedness effects in operational performance in terms of productivity and quality gains. We investigated furniture companies and its customers and suppliers ties. Specifically, we analyze how relational embeddedness trust and solidarity reinforces structural embeddedness, which was evaluated from outsourcing costs and sales concentration. Our results point out that customers’ relational embeddedness improves quality performance, whereas with suppliers leads to productivity gains. We found two paradoxical effects. First, lower levels of trust and solidarity generates negative effect on suppliers of structural embeddedness in productivity, but at higher levels these effects are positive. Second, the contradiction can be observed when we found a positive effect of two types of immersion combination in productivity, but negative on quality. This paper aims to analyze structural and relational embeddedness effects in operational performance in terms of productivity and quality gains.
