Multiple objective programming -- An application for analysis and evaluation of peasant economy of the VIIIth Region of Chile

Abstract This study was conducted within a Farming Systems Research project, after its diagnostic phase and as part of the on-farm research design stage. The objective was to develop and apply a mathematical model to aid in understanding the functioning of a small-scale farming system, and in evaluating ex ante the potential impact of different technological and rural development actions. Multiple objective programming proved to be a useful tool in reaching these objectives, as it highlighted the specific roles of the different production activities and the relationships between them at the whole-farm level. This study was conducted using data from small-scale peasant production systems in the VIIIth Region of Chile.

Costos de Transacción y de Producción en Explotaciones Bovinas de la VII Región del Maule

The objective of this study was to determine the transaction and total cost at the beef cattle farms from Region Maule. The questionary was applied to 154 farmers with calf-beef cow system located at Curico, Talca, Parral, Longavi, Linares, Curepto, San Clemente and San Javier in April of 2008, considering aspects such us: human resources, infraestructure, farm resources, productive management, technical assistanship and trading. El presente articulo expone los resultados mas relevantes de una investigacion, que tuvo por objeto realizar un diagnostico socio-productivo de las unidades de produccion campesina de la microregion de Tilama, de forma tal de poder definir estrategias de intervencion en desarrollo rural con perspectiva de genero. El indagar en el hogar campesino permite observar que este no constituye una unidad homogenea de relaciones entre miembros iguales, sino que esta determinado por dinamicas de poder y desigualdad, que no solo se fundan en las diferencias de genero, sino tambien en variables como la generacion y la posicion dentro del hogar. Asimismo se intenta ver como opera la variable genero en la unidad de produccion familiar, en la division de tareas, en la distribucion de espacios sociales, saberes y conocimientos, y la incidencia de estas diferencias en la participacion social y las formas que esta misma adquiere.
