The aim of this paper is to discuss social and health repercussions in women due to drug use, as disclosed in reports published in magazines with national circulation. This is a qualitative research, with an exploratory and descriptive approach. Articles published in four magazines were used, during six consecutive months as of September of 2009. Fifty-two articles were identified with comments on women and the drug phenomena. The information was addressed by means of thematic content analysis. The reports address the increased consumption of drugs by women, the consumption of drugs to maintain and/or achieve the established sociocultural standards of beauty, with risks for addiction and overdose, and situations resulting from violence towards women living with male drug users. Economical, political, ideological and cultural reflexes for women involved with the drug phenomena could be the cause or consequence of implications in the health of this population. DESCRIPTORS: Women. Drug users. Mass media.

This documentary, qualitative, descriptive study has the objective to analyze images and representations of the female body and their relation to drug use in the content of articles published in four magazines with national circulation (Veja, Isto E, Boa Forma, Claúdia). The articles selected were submitted to the technique of content analysis, with three thematic groups identified: the body as an incentive to use drugs; risks to the body resulting from drug use; and the search for the perfect body through drug use. The data showed that the media reproduces rigid aesthetic standards, exposing women to social and health offenses that stimulate drug use, either autonomously or by prescription. The search for beauty and the appeal to feminine eroticism, published through the communication channels analyzed limit the social importance of women by using images that link them to the status of sexual object.

Objective To describe the experience of homeless women and their high risk drug use. Method Qualitative research whose data were produced by semi-structured interviews conducted with seven women enrolled in a CAPSad in Salvador, Bahia, in the period from October to December 2012. Results Theme content analysis was adopted to organize the data that resulted from processing two thematic categories: Gender, violence and drug use: What changes and what is perpetuated in the life of women users; No strings attached: life on the streets. Conclusion The results show that many behaviors experienced in the family context and social constructions are reproduced by women and keep them vulnerable to social and health issues, among them the onset and maintenance of high risk drug use. Objective To describe the experience of homeless women and their high risk drug use.
