Abortion is a serious public health problem that involves legal, economic, social and psychological issues. This qualitative study aimed to identify situations that interfere in the abortion decision and the feelings about the process of aborting. The study was conducted in a public maternity hospital in the city of Salvador (Northeastern Brazil), and the subjects were nine women hospitalized due to induced abortion. To collect data, we used the interview accompanied by a semi-structured form. Ethical aspects were considered based on Resolution 196/96 of the National Health Council. For the analysis of the discourses, we used Bardins content analysis technique. The sample was characterized by predominantly black adult women, married or in a stable union, financially dependent on the partner. In the analysis, two themes emerged: motivation and feelings. Among the reasons leading to abortion, there are financial difficulties, the number of children, the experience of domestic violence and the loss of their autonomy. The process of aborting generates fear of death, sadness and relief. Women experiencing induced abortion revealed a very painful process from the moment they discover the pregnancy until the difficult decision to interrupt it. When they are not helped, these women perpetuate the pain, living days of anguish and guilt. The exercise of listening and welcoming these women must be present in the lives of health professionals, regardless of their views on abortion, so that the women can express their feelings, and then get appropriate help and referral.

This qualitative studys objective was to analyze the process of identification of conjugal violence by professionals from the Family Health Strategy in Sao Francisco do Conde/Salvador, Bahia. Interviews were held with 22 professionals (doctors, nurses, social workers and dentists) and, after analysis of the data, the following categories emerged: (Non)identification of conjugal violence in the Family Health Team; Perception of the violence being restricted to physical aggression; The scale and complexity of the conjugal violence; and Breaking the silence in the Family Health Team. The study showed that identification of conjugal violence occurs during professional assistance. Failure to identify the phenomenon is related to the curriculums which do not cover domestic violence as a health object. This points to the importance of a listening and trusting relationship in the process of identifying this threat to health. It is necessary to adopt strategies for confronting the problem, along with better preparation of professionals, which would give greater visibility to the issue. DESCRIPTORS: Violence against women. Quantitative study in order to study domestic violence in women with induced abortion. Interviews were conducted with 147 women hospitalized for induced abortion in a public maternity hospital in Salvador, Bahia. The subjects are characterized by mostly women, black, poorly educated, economically dependent on spouses, experienced psychological abuse, physical and sexual abuse committed by their spouses. Almost half of the women were victims of domestic violence during the current pregnancy, and that was the reason for inducing abortion for 67% of them. The study reveals an association between experience of domestic violence and induced abortion. As mental health consequences, they developed symptoms of post trauma stress disorder. It is necessary that the health professionals consider the cues to identify domestic violence as a health problem associated with induced abortion, which requires a transformation on the training model, including domestic violence as a health issue.

The study showed that intersectoral coordi -nation and care services are provided by the factors that interfere in the fight against violence against women. Both elements are related to strengthening the network of care for women victims of violence. The study points out the need to know the powers of other institutions and reaffirms the importance of coordination between them. It also provides the elements that guide the development of coordina-ted policies and actions to facilitate the process of dealing with violence against women. Keywords: Violence against Women; Domestic Vio -lence; Health Care; Intersectoral Action; Nursing.

Method: qualitative study. Interviews were held with 19 women, who were experiencing conjugal violence, and who were resident in a community in Salvador, Bahia, Brazil. The project was approved by the Research Ethics Committee (N. 42/2011). Results: the data was organized using the Discourse of the Collective Subject, identifying the summary central ideas: they witnessed violence between their parents; they suffered repercussions from the violence between their parents: they were angry about the mothers submission to her partner; and they reproduced the conjugal violence. The discourse showed that the women witnessed, in childhood and adolescence, violence between their parents, and were injured both physically and psychologically. As a result of the mothers submission, feelings of anger arose in the children. However, in the adult phase of their own lives, they noticed that their conjugal life resembled that of their parents, reproducing the violence. Conclusion: investment is necessary in strategies designed to break inter-generational violence, and the health professionals are important in this process, as it is a phenomenon with repercussions in health. Because they work in the Family Health Strategy, which focuses on the prevention of harm and illness, health promotion and interdepartmentality, the nurses are essential in the process of preventing and confronting this phenomenon.

The work of the professional nurse is indispensable in the programs for harm prevention and for the promotion and assistance of the health of women and families, through social and health service means and facilities existing in the community. This study aimed to analyze the situations that precipitate and/or intensify conflicts in the conjugal relationship. Homens e mulheres em vivência de violência conjugal: características socioeconômicas

Nadirlene Pereira Gomes; Normélia Maria Freire Diniz; Climene Laura de Camargo; Marieve Pereira da Silva

Quantitative and descriptive study aiming to identify socioeconomic characteristics of men and women with a history of domestic violence. We conducted interviews with 50 men and 50 women. Nearly all subjects were self-declared black. Most did not have too many years of school education. Men perform occupations that are public and women do predominantly domestic activities. Only 3 women (6%) are considered financially independent. The degree of economic dependence is directly related to the level of education that has been established as a prerequisite to enter into the labor market. The situation is even more precarious for women interviewed with fewer years of education and a high degree of financial dependence that interferes with their empowerment to address domestic violence. Health professionals, especially nurses, should address the social inequities and improve the socioeconomic context of users to identify situations that endanger the health of the population.
