The use of software to support qualitative analysis has been growing since the 1980s when the first software began to be developed through collaborative research by researchers. There are still recurrent discussions about the contributions and limits of the use of these resources in qualitative analyzes. Considering this perspective, this work aims to analyze the contributions and limitations of the use of content analysis software, in order to support the researcher in his decision making when opting for the use of software resources. Several contributions are identified, such as the possibility of treatment and retrieval of a large volume of qualitative data, allowing a greater time of interpretative analysis to the researcher. As a more frequent limitation, we present the absence of contextual analysis of the units of study: words. Thus, the active role of the researcher remains indispensable in view of the fact that the software proposes a support for the mechanical activity of content analysis, but the creation of valid scientific knowledge requires the rationality of the researcher from the interpretation of the data against pertinent theorization.

Expatriate staff members are important in the implementation of strategies for multinational corporations. This study investigates the determinant factors of assigning Japanese expatriates to manage their subsidiaries in Brazil at the beginning of the twenty-first century. Understanding the determinants of the international designation of people for managing foreign subsidiaries collaborates with debate and discussion on expatriation strategies, which are not well established in literature. The research utilized a quantitative study to which we applied a multiple regression analysis based on database of Japanese subsidiaries in Brazil. The results show that the main determinant factor of the international assignment is related to the subsidiary size. Moreover, it was identified that equity ownership, experience in the host country, and industry type did not impact the Japanese expatriation to Brazil.

Expatriate managers play an important role in implementing the strategic objectives of multinational enterprises. The study aims at analyzing the strategy of expatriation in its three areas – expatriate, multinational company and international environment. It should be noted that these elements have been addressed separately in the literature. Multinational companies, in addition to verifying the conditions related to internal resources, also need to determine the key components that permeate the individual issues that will influence the determinants of personnel appointment of a foreign subsidiary. The institutional and cultural distance are external factors, however, they affect the level of the organization, and consequently, the individual. The contribution of the study consists of developing a framework and proposes a new view on the topic that includes the perspectives of the overall strategy proposed by Peng (2012), however, it highlights the role of people in the process of expatriation.
