Stress and sleep quality of nurses working different hospital shifts

Maria Cecília Pires da Rocha; Milva Maria Figueiredo De Martino

The purpose of this study was to analyze the relationship between stress and sleep quality among nurses who work on different hospital departments during morning, afternoon and night shifts. This study was performed in a hospital in Campinas, Sao Paulo. Data collection was performed using the Bianchi Stress Scale modified (BSSm) and Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI). Study participants were 203 registered nurses, mostly aged between 40 and 49 years. Results show there is a significant correlation between stress and sleep (Spearman Analysis; r = 0.21318; p = 0.0026). Nurses working morning shifts showed higher stress levels (p = 0.030; Chi-square Test,) and poor sleep quality. In conclusion, stress level was a factor directly correlated to sleep, showing that the higher the stress score, the worse the quality of sleep.

Maria Cecília Pires da Rocha; Milva Maria Figueiredo De Martino

Objective: To describe the stress level and the use of sleeping pills among registered nurses and to examine the relationships among stress, sleep quality, and the use of sleeping pills. Methods: This cross-sectional descriptive comparative study used a sample of 203 registered nurses from a major hospital in Campinas, Sao Paulo, Brazil. Data were collected with the Bianchi Stress Scale-Revised and the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index. Results: A great number of the sample of registered nurses (17.7%) used sleeping pills. Among those, 48.6 had higher level of alertness and stress (p = .016) and a great number of them (n =36) had worse sleep quality score. Conclusion: Registered nurses who used sleeping pills also had higher levels of stress and worse sleep quality. Objective: To describe the stress level and the use of sleeping pills among registered nurses and to examine the relationships among stress, sleep quality, and the use of sleeping pills. This study aimed to characterize the elderly who naps according to sociodemographic characteristics and frailty. A descriptive, cross-sectional study part of the multicenter project Frailty in the Elderly Brazilians. We evaluated 1,866 elderly people using a sociodemographic questionnaire. The frailty was assessed using the phenotype proposed by Fried. The data were analyzed with descriptive statistics. The results showed that the profile of the elderly who naps consists predominantly of women, married, retired, pre-frail, with an average age of 73 years, four years of study, with monthly family income of 3.9 minimum salary, with 4,4 children who were living with them only. The elderly reported napping on average 5.9 days per week, lasting 53.5 minutes per nap. Knowing the profile of the elderly who naps contributes to health professionals in the development of actions in relation to sleep problems of the frail/pre-frail elderly, preventing, minimizing or solving these problems.

Maria Cecília Pires da Rocha; Milva Maria Figueiredo De Martino; Luciane Ruiz Carmona Ferreira

This study aimed to analyze the stress levels of nurses working in different sectors of the morning, afternoon and night; characterize the stressors of different sectors and compare the level of stress variables. This study was quantitative, descriptive, transversal and comparative study conducted in a hospital in the city of Campinas, Sao Paulo, Brazil. We used to collect data an identification form and scale of stress modified Bianchi (EBEM). The study population consisted of 203 subjects of the various shifts, and 59.6% of the day, 65% open areas, 88.2% female, mean age of 39.6 years. The stress score was 2.60 (average level of stress). Among the nurses were supervisors incidence of 79% with medium level of stress and 10.5% with early and high level of stress. Among the nurses, 48.3% had medium level of stress and 40.0% with early and high level of stress. We concluded that stress was present, regardless of sector of work, but the lack of human resources to cover the shift, the lack of material and / or equipment to assist and work with technically disqualified were the stressors with higher scores of stress.
