Permanent education emphasizes on the interdisciplinarity of the health team, focuses on practice as the source of knowledge and places professionals as active actors of the educational process. The objective of this study was to identify demands and expectations, i.e. factors that interfere in the qualification of nursing workers of a university hospital, and propose capacitation practices from the perspective of permanent education. The investigation process founded on the principles of action-research was performed from 2007 to 2008. Subjects were nurses, nursing technicians and nursing aides. Data collection was performed in training workshops with 114 nursing workers. The results permitted to identify the institutional conditions in which educational actions take place, the possibility of mobilizing workers to identify and solve problems at works, and the need to make changes in training practices. This study provided support for elaborating a proposal of a Center for Permanent Education in Nursing at the institution.Permanent education emphasizes on the interdisciplinarity of the health team, focuses on practice as the source of knowledge and places professionals as active actors of the educational process. The aim of this chapter is to contribute to the debate about the current situation of action research in Brazil. We adopt an open-ended approach to action research as a methodology that can only achieve results by the dialogue between the involved actors and the knowledge they hold. The text examines the history of action research in Brazil, its context and main references, nature as a quest for a methodological alternative for performing popular research and sharing culture, and its insertion in human and social science paradigms. We then highlight main areas in which the method has been applied and the space occupied by action research in Brazilian universities. Finally, we examine aspects that should be considered in fostering a renewal of action research.
