Sebastião Renato Valverde; Naisy Silva Soares; Márcio Lopes da Silva

This study has the objective of analyzing the performance of the Brazilian wood pulp export, from 1993 to 2002, applying the constant-market-share method (CMS). The export performance of Brazil, Canada, USA, Sweden and Finland were evaluated. The growth of the Brazilian wood pulp export and of the main competitor in the international market was explained mainly by the growth of international trade. Brazil presented the highest competitiveness followed by Finland. The other countries presented decrease in competitiveness. The income growth of wood pulp buyer markets from Canada, USA and Sweden was a determinant for the growth of those country exports. The opposite happened with the income of countries of destination of the Brazilian and Finnish exports. The projection export indicated that in 2035 Brazil will be the major wood pulp exporter, in terms of export value, if the taxes of exports growth are maintained.

Eliane Pinheiro de Sousa; Naisy Silva Soares; Márcio Lopes da Silva; Sebastião Renato Valverde

The present work objectives to analyze the performance of the forest sector for the Brazilian economy, with reference to the year 2005. The input-output matrix model was used to estimate sector multipliers, Rasmussen-Hirschman linkage indexes and linkage pure indexes. The results showed that the forest sector was important for the socio-economic development of Brazil, in 2005, since it contributed to the credit of the Brazilian trade balance, given its participation in the value of the exports for production unit. Besides, the relevance of that sector can also be demonstrated by the alteration impacts in the final demand of the forest sector about the production, the collection of taxes, the income and jobs.

Competitividade da produção de palmito de pupunha no Espírito Santo e em São Paulo

Eliane Pinheiro de Sousa; Naisy Silva Soares; Sidney Araujo Cordeiro; Márcio Lopes da Silva

This work aims to analyze the competitiveness of pejibaye palm heart production in Espirito Santo and Sao Paulo states by applying the Policy Analysis Matrix (PAM). Results show that the private and social profitabilities of pejibaye palm heart production and trading were positive in both states and are higher than those obtained by traditional crops, such as soybean, and by forest products, such as natural rubber. Sao Paulo production was more profitable, being thus more competitive than Espirito Santo. However, these profitabilities could have been higher if producers were not exposed to negative effects of distorted public policies.

The present work aimed to analyze the competitiveness of the eucalyptus productive chain in Brazil, comparing different production systems, through a policy analysis matrix (PAM). Based on the results obtained, it was concluded that the private and social profitability of the production and commercialization of eucalyptus was positive and greater in flat areas; Brazilian producers were penalized by the public policies adopted for the sector; the production in flat areas was more competitive and less exposed to the negative effects of public policies; and national producers had decreased profits.

The objective of this study was to carry out the financial analysis and the risk of investment simulation in projects for reforestation with eucalyptus aiming to produce charcoal and wood, with or without IEF/MG forest fomentation. A financial analysis was performed through the forestry project evaluation methods, and the risk analysis was carried out through the Monte Carlo simulation technique by @RISK software. Among the projects tested, those that aimed for the production of charcoal with IEF/MG forest fomentation got the best financial results. It was verified that the costs of forest crop, transport, and charcoal-burning together are responsible for the largest portion of the total cost. The risk analysis simulation showed that the variables which affected Net Present Value (NPV) for the projects whose production is charcoal, according to the ranking of importance (R), were: products price, forest productivity, discount rate, harvesting cost and cost of implantation. In terms of the production of wood, it was observed that the order of importance when discussing the cost of harvesting and implantation, the latter was the most negatively influential of the VPL on the project without IEF forest fomentation.

Efeito da área e da produtividade na produção de celulose no Brasil

Kaio Henrique Adame de Carvalho; Márcio Lopes da Silva; Naisy Silva Soares

The objective of this work was to study the technological production of pulpwood. Therefore, production of hardwood pulp derived from eucalyptus effect was broken down into area and productivity effects. For this purpose, we used the shift-share model with which was found that these two variables contributed most to the trend in pulp production in the country in recent years. The following periods were evaluated: 1960 to 1970; 1970 to 1980; 1980 to 1990; 1990 to 2000; 2000 to 2007 and 1960 to 2007. Overall, it was observed that from 1960 to 2007, the main factor that explained the growth of pulp production was the productivity, but the low value for the area effect was due to expansion that started only in the 1990s. We also found that the planted forests in Brazil are very recent when compared to other countries, although the Brazilian pulp industry has managed to become competitive in both within the country and abroad.

This study analyzed the viability of implantation of futures contract of reforestation wood in Brazil, with focus on the market of Eucalyptus pulpwood production. For this purpose, the micro analysis model of Pennings and Leuthold (1999) was taken as reference. Data were collected through questionnaires addressed to the cellulose companies. The results indicated that the characteristics of managers and companies were shown favorable to the development of this type contract, since all the managers present individual characteristics prone to negotiate in exchange, as high education level and age below 60 years. Besides, the results showed a probable demand for future wood contracts in Brazil by the companies, and that they have enough financial conditions to operate in exchanges, are exposed to risk and are risk averse, and that employees of almost all the companies receive training in the economic and administration areas. It was therefore concluded that there is potential for the implantation of a futures contract of pulpwood in Brazil.
