The objective of this work was to estimate an economic value for the Permanent Preservation Areas in Sao Bartolomeu watershed, located in Vicosa, MG. The Contingent Valuation Method was used to estimate the true willingness-to-pay (WTP) of the city of Vicosa residents for the restoration or preservation of these areas. The monthly true WTP was estimated at R

This study has the objective of analyzing the performance of the Brazilian wood pulp export, from 1993 to 2002, applying the constant-market-share method (CMS). The export performance of Brazil, Canada, USA, Sweden and Finland were evaluated. The growth of the Brazilian wood pulp export and of the main competitor in the international market was explained mainly by the growth of international trade. Brazil presented the highest competitiveness followed by Finland. The other countries presented decrease in competitiveness. The income growth of wood pulp buyer markets from Canada, USA and Sweden was a determinant for the growth of those country exports. The opposite happened with the income of countries of destination of the Brazilian and Finnish exports. The projection export indicated that in 2035 Brazil will be the major wood pulp exporter, in terms of export value, if the taxes of exports growth are maintained.

The objective of the present work was to analyze the economic viability of rubber -cocoa intercropping with and without carbon credits, considering the possibility of this activity to generate Certified Emission Reductions (CERs). The CERs quantification and the economic analysis were accomplished for a 34-year planning horizon, in which the implantation of rubber tree occurred in the first year and cocoa in fourth year of project. The intercropping estimated carbon stock was obtained from arboreal biomass data. The rubber -cocoa intercropping carbon stock was 106.91 tC/ha, which corresponded to 393 CERs/ha. The results lead to the following conclusion: the arboreal biomass carbon stock, particularly of the rubber trees, qualify the rubber-cocoa intercropping as a CERs generation promising activity, making the intercropping an option of Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) project, with potential for approval by the United Nations Framework Convention on Climatic Changes (UNFCCC).

Os dados foram tabulados e processados no Excel e Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS).

This study evaluated the important role the forestry sector plays in the Brazilian economic development by means of the multisector general economic equilibrium models, through the analyses of the Input-Output Matrix (IOM) and the Social Accounting Matrix (SAM). The main sources were the Input-Output Tables (IOT) from the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE), the National Bank of Economic and Social Development (BNDES), from the Brazilian Central Bank (BACEN) and the Brazilian Federal Revenue Office (SRF), for 1995. It was observed that the extra power a productive sector has over another to multiply GDP, jobs, taxes, salaries and trade balance, is as important as contributing for the generation of these indicators, when one extra monetary unit is spent by the final consumers demanding for products of this particular sector. The results showed that forestry is one of the Brazilian economic sectors presenting the greatest multiplying effects for the social-economic indicators. It surpassed other sectors such as the automobilistic electric and electronic, machinery and equipment and chemicals and petroleum industries.

Aiming at rendering effective the permanent preservation areas (PPAs) and legal reserve areas (LRA) in the rural properties to fulfill the legislation, it is extremely important to quantify and determine the percentage occupied by these areas in the rural properties as well as the role they play in the economic activities of the farmers. Thus, this project aimed to quantify the PPAs and LRA regarding the total area of the investigated rural properties. The existing area with native vegetation was also determined in each property and in the PPAs in compliance with the legislation. The sample was composed by 47 properties, stratified in six strata and using as a stratification criterion the size of each one of them. Data were collected using a GPS and quantification using the GIS ArcView 3.3. Based on the results, it was verified that the 47 studied properties occupy an area of 1.854.35ha, of which, 811.35ha, referring to the 43.75% of the total, are APPs and ARLs, in compliance with the federal and state legislations. Moreover, only 21.09% of these areas show an appropriate land use, evidencing a non-fulfillment of the law and the need to implement effective corrective measures.

The objective of this study was to establish the viable transport maximum distance for each type of wood transportation vehicle from the harvest areas to the consumption centers. Thus, reforestation cost and revenue data were used, as well as the load capacity of different types of vehicles used for wood transport. The application of economic criteria (VPL, TIR, CMP and BCPE) showed that the distances varied between 155 and 226 km, for the small truck and rodotrem (truck with two large trailers), respectively. It was concluded that rodotrem could reach a greater distance, with wood price being the factor most influencing maximum transport distance.
