This is an integrative literature review that aims to identfy evidences on the factors causing overload and their consequences for family caregivers of adults or the elderly. The review covered 27 studies at databases, using the keywords caregivers, family, and overload in the period from 1999 to 2009. Four categories came up: the imposition of being a caregiver, taking care alone, the dependence of the person that receives care, and the bio-psychosocial weariness of the caregiver. The results showed that the imposition of the role of caregiver, lack of support from other family members, level of dependency of the patient related to the pathology, and physical and psychological weariness are the main factors causing overload in family caregivers. The need for more support and availability by health professionals to family caregivers in their home activities is evident.

7 Masters student of the Nursing Graduate Program, UFRGS. Porto Alegre, Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. E-mail: francielefrc@ gmail.com ABSTRACT: This qualitative research was developed in the renal outpatient clinic of a public hospital in the south of Brazil. The objective of the study was to describe how patients in conservative treatment of chronic renal insufficiency care for themselves. Fifteen patients in conservative treatment of chronic renal insufficiency participated in the research. A narrative interview was used for the collection of data. The following themes were identified: lifestyle, continuity, changes and adaptations; the use of drugs in self-care; outpatient monitoring in conservative treatment; and physical activity and leisure in self-care. It was concluded that the self-care of patients in conservative treatment is expressed through attitudes that range from denial to acceptance of the chronic condition. It is necessary to think about health promotion more amply, seeking quality of life for patients in conservative treatment of chronic renal insufficiency for self-care. This study aimed to investigate the perception of the workers in a Long-Term Care Institution for the Elderly regarding the families of the older adults in the institution. It is qualitative research, undertaken with 16 workers of the multidisciplinary team. Data collection occurred in February-June 2012, through semi-structured interviews. The technique used for treatment of the data was thematic analysis. The results indicate that the family members visit the Long-Term Care Institution for the Elderly rarely, with commemorative dates being the main occasions in which they appear. The workers evidenced some situations of abandonment, in which the family does not visit the older adult even when called. They understand that nobody can substitute the role of the family, as it is the reference for the older adults. Therefore, spending time with the family can positively influence the well-being of the older adults in institutions. DESCRIPTORS: Homes for the aged. Workers. Family. This study investigated how the health knowledge is constructed by individuals with hypertension, accompanied by a team of family health. This is a qualitative descriptive study, conducted with nine individuals whose data were collected through semi-structured interviews and observation. The data was analyzed through thematic analysis. The construction of knowledge in health is influenced by many elements in the everyday life of the subjects. The dialogue and interaction with others are elements of greatest impact to build such knowledge. Thus, the health education group was pointed out as a relevant activity, both due to the explanations presented by the professionals, as well as the Exchange of knowledge and experiences with the other participants. It is concluded that although living the same pedagogical activities, the repercussions of the health education actions will take effect and will be noticed differently by the subjects.
