The eating habits of the Brazilian population have been changing in recent decades and publicity is one of the factors contributing to this situation. The objective of this study was to evaluate the content of food publicity broadcast on television and addressed to children, from the standpoint of regulation. The publicity broadcast on the two major television stations during the school holidays was recorded on VHS tapes. Content analysis techniques were used and eight categories of analysis were defined based on the theoretical benchmark of the eating habits and their determining factors. The proposal for a Technical Regulation of Anvisa was used to conduct this analysis. 1018 advertisements were recorded, of which 132 (12.9%) that advertised foods targeted at children were selected, but only 12 different products were identified. According to the proposed regulation, all the material analyzed violated no less than three articles, among which the 4th, Sections III and VIb stand out. The pressing need for government regulation of the content of food advertisements for children, the consumption of which can be harmful to health, is clearly apparent because of its influence on the decision to purchase, both by the children themselves, and their parents.

Considering the importance of nutritional care for the quality of care provided to hospitalized patients, the study aims to assess health care in eight public hospitals that have received support from QualiSUS in four Brazilian states. There were semi-structured interviews with nutritionists, direct observation and review of 219 records of patients admitted to the medical clinics. The findings suggest weaknesses in the hospital nutritional care, poor integration between the production of food and nutritional care in the surveyed hospitals, in addition to structural deficiencies. We highlight problems related to the nutritional care process, including its documentation. In 93% of the records there were no records on the nutritional status on admission, or nutritional assessment of patients in nutritional therapy. It was observed that the assessment made by the health surveillance in routine inspections, focusing on the verification of compliance and structural aspects, does not include the detection of a possible nutritional risk for the patient. We suggest the inclusion of other criteria and strategies for surveillance, among them a review of open medical records.

This study analyzed potential conflicts of interest regarding the commercial private sector and health promotion policies, particularly their interface with the food and nutrition field in Brazil. The paper addresses the influence of international ideas in this process. The study analyzed the two separate publications of the Brazilian National Health Promotion Policy – of 2006, and of 2014 – and the international agreements that supported them. The method used was analysis of documents, with a categorization into the following dimensions and categories: In the dimension of the Ideas of health promotion, the focus items were the principles and the strategies proposed; In the dimension of conflicts of interest, these aspects were identified: the approach in the documents, relationships with the commercial private sector, and proposals referred to as ‘public-private partnerships’. It was concluded that these policies still adopt a fragile approach in terms of conflict of interest. The debate is de-politicized when the asymmetries of power between the sectors involved in the public-private relationships are not made explicit, or when the practices of the commercial private sector that harm objectives, principles and values of health promotion policies are left out of account. This study analyzed potential conflicts of interest regarding the commercial private sector and health promotion policies, particularly their interface with the food and nutrition field in Brazil. ABSTRACT The aim of this study was to verify whether the portion sizes adopted by school lunch cooks were in accordance with nutritional recommendations by PNAE (Brazilian School Nutrition Program). Portion sizes corresponding to shallow and full measures were weighed on a digital scale in duplicate to determine the average weight of each food portion. Nutritional composition of meals was determined using the Brazilian Table of Food Composition. Total energy value (TEV), carbohydrates, proteins, lipids, iron, sodium, vitamin C and dietary fiber were compared with PNAE recommendations for schoolchildren. As a result, two menu proposals with adequate portion sizes were developed. TEV and carbohydrate recommendations were met in the shallow portion size and exceeded recommendations in the full measure. Both shallow and full portions exceeded recommendations for protein, fat and sodium. The values found for dietary fiber, iron and vitamin C were in accordance with PNAE recommendations in both portion sizes. The menu proposals were in accordance with nutritional recommendations except for sodium, which remained slightly above limits. The study showed the need for the creation of manufacturing technical cards aimed at standardizing the portioning of foods/dishes offered to schoolchildren, as well as the training of school lunch cooks.

This study determined the anthropometric profile and adequacy of nutrients in meals served to students at a university restaurant (UR). Anthropometric measures were assessed and body mass index (BMI) was calculated. Food offered was evaluated by direct observation of servings distributed to students. A total of 151 students participated in the study, in which 72.2% presented adequate BMI and 19.2% were overweight. The composition of meals in relation to total energy, carbohydrates, and total fat is in line with nutritional parameters recommended by World Health Organization—WHO/FAO (2003). The offer of fruits and vegetables are below the WHO recommendation. Proteins, cholesterol, and sodium are above recommended levels. The nutritional status of students should be frequently monitored and the meals offered to students should be planned to prevent diet-related diseases.
