The objective of the present research was to investigate the characteristics and most frequent behavioral and emotional complaints of patients assisted by a public service of Psychology directed to Children. The participants involved in the study were 129 children or adolescents. Data were collected from medical records, by means of a medical form containing, among other issues, information about gender, age, education and main complaints. The frequencies and percentages of the referred complaints were figured out and, the significance analysis of differences was performed according to a gender division.. The most often complaints reported were: aggressiveness (32.6%), learning difficulties (30.2%), low tolerance to frustration and/or difficulty to control impulses (24.8%) and lack of interest in school subjects (19.4%). There were significant differences between genders, for complaints such as, lack of interest in school subjects, disobedience and behaviors typically associated to depression/suicide attempt. It is necessary to reconsider the mental health policies, paying special attention to the increase of aggressiveness, depression and difficulties regarding learning.

Mutations of the mitofusin 2 (MFN2) gene have been reported to be the most common cause of the axonal form of Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease (CMT). The aim of this study was to describe a de novo MFN2 p.R104W mutation and characterize the associated phenotype. We screened the entire coding region of MFN2 gene and characterized its clinical phenotype, nerve conduction studies and sural nerve biopsy. Neuropsychological tests and brain MRI were also performed. A de novo mutation was found in exon 4 (c.310C>T; p.R104W). In addition to a severe and early onset axonal neuropathy, the patient presented learning problems, obesity, glucose intolerance, leukoencephalopathy, brain atrophy and evidence of myelin involvement and mitochondrial structural changes on sural nerve biopsy. These results suggest that MFN2 p.R104W mutation is as a hot-spot for MFN2 gene associated to a large and complex range of phenotypes.

UNLABELLED Whereas an evaluation of quality of life and possible impacts on the mental state of a patient may help to evaluate the evolution of chronic inflammatory demyelinating polyneuropathy (CIDP), the aim of this study was to study the psychological profile of patients, and evaluate quality of life associated with the disease. METHOD 41 patients were evaluated using a Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE) and a Short-Form Health Survey (SF-36). RESULTS The mean age of the patients was 50.6 years, 63.4% men. Of the participants, 65.9% had other health problems, 39% reported needing help with activities of daily living, 49% slept less than 8 hours per night, and 34.1% complained of some memory deficit. The average MMSE score was 26. Impairment of functional capacity and pain were the more important altered health states. CONCLUSION CIDP has important social and economic impacts, owing to functional impairments that can lead to professional and personal limitations.

PURPOSE To evaluate through standardized questionnaires the quality of life of elderly people with hearing loss diagnosed with and without the use of hearing aids (HA) and elderly without hearing complaints. METHODS This is a cross-sectional study with non probabilistic sample, divided into three groups divided as follows: 30 elderly people with diagnosed hearing loss and indication for use of individual sound amplification devices (hearing aids), but have not yet made use of the prosthesis; 30 individuals with hearing impairment who used hearing aids and 30 elderly without hearing complaints. Participants completed a questionnaire investigating sociodemographic and family data, the Hearing Handicap Inventory for the Elderly Screening Version (HHIE-S) and the World Health Organization Quality of Life - Short version (WHOQOL-BREF). In addition to the descriptive analysis of the data were performed tests to compare the three groups by applying analysis of variance (ANOVA) and the Bonferroni post hoc test. RESULTS The three groups differed significantly in all domains of quality of life. The group of the elderly people with hearing loss diagnosed and with indication for the use of hearing aids presented lower scores and the group of the elderly with hearing disabilities that used the hearing aid and that the reference group. The AASI group presented the best quality of life results. CONCLUSION The hearing loss affects the quality of life of the elderly. The effective use of hearing aid is beneficial to this population, improving their living and health conditions.

Objective: To conduct a systematic literature review, in SciELO and PubMed databases, about the cognitive and linguistic changes associated with aging, focusing on risk and protective factors. Methods: Articles conducted with people aged 60 or more and published between 2002 and 2008 were searched in English, Portuguese and Spanish. Results: 72 studies were reviewed in 38 different journals, being 9.7% (7) from national journals and 90.3% (65) from international ones, and 26.3% (10) in the area of Neurology, 23.7% (9) Geriatrics and Aging, 13.2% (5) Epidemiology and Public Health, 10.5% (4) Psychiatry and the rest from magazines of different health issues. The longitudinal design was used in 51.3% (37) and the cross-sectional one, in 36.1% (26). About the data collection instruments, 48.6% (35) of the works used the Mini-Mental State Examination, 15.1% (11) used the Verbal Fluency Test, 12.5% (9) the Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale, 9.7% (7) the Boston Naming Test and 13.8% (10) Geriatric Depression Scale. We identified relationships between cognition in aging and biological factors in 69.4% (50) of the researches. Some studies have indicated increased likelihood of cognitive impairment among elderly people with depressive symptoms and among smokers. Studies have shown a positive effect of education and participation in physical and social activities on cognition. Conclusions: Studies in the analyzed period specifically investigated the relationship between biological risk factors and cognitive decline. Little attention was given to linguistic changes and protective factors associated with aging.
