Sweet potato clones were evaluated in Vitoria da Conquista, Bahia State, Brazil. Sixteen clones (1; 2; 7; 9; 14; 15; 17; 19; 23; 25; 29; 30; 36; 38; 44 and 100), originating from Janauba, Vicosa, Bom Jardim de Minas, Gurupi, Santo Antonio da Platina, Holambra II, Vitoria da Conquista and Condeuba were analyzed. Random plots were utilized with 16 treatments and three repetitions. The following characteristics were evaluated: total root yield, average root weight; commercial root yield; average commercial root weight; length, diameter and form of the roots; resistance to soil insects and branch weight. The data were submitted to variance analysis and ScottKnott test with 5% probability. Clones 1; 7; 25; 29 and 38 stood out in root yield and the clones 1; 2; 7; 9; 17; 25; 29 and 36 stood out in branch weight. Clones 1; 25 and 36 presented the best results concerning the length of roots.

The high perishability of fresh cassava (Manihot esculenta, Crantz) means it must be consumed in a very short period after harvesting. The main cause of loss is due to the physiological deterioration attributed to the action of peroxidase (EC1.11.1.7). This work aimed to evaluate the combined effect of different peroxidase inhibitors at concentrations of 1, 5 and 10 mM on the peroxidase activity of roots of the Cacau Amarela cassava variety. The roots were immersed for one hour in solutions containing ascorbic acid, sodium bisulphite, Na2-EDTA, sodium dodecyl sulphate (SDS) and L-cysteine. After drying, the roots were stored at 25 °C for six days. The visual appearance was analyzed every two days and samples removed for the subsequent evaluation of peroxidase. All the treatments were effective in increasing the shelf life of the fresh cassava roots by up to four days. The treatments with ascorbic acid, bisulphite and L-cysteine were efficient in increasing the shelf life by up to 6 days at concentrations of 10 mM, 10 mM and 5 mM, respectively. For all the inhibitors at all the concentrations applied there was a decrease in peroxidase activity on the second day of storage as compared to the control.

Paclobutrazol can mitigate the negative effects of water stress in many plant species, however, for coffee plants is necessary to expand the knowledge base on the subject. In this research it was aimed to evaluate the morphophysiology of young plants of Coffea Arabica cv. ‘Catuai Vermelho IAC 144’ in response to different water regimes and paclobutrazol concentrations applied in the soil. The trial was carried out in a greenhouse at Vitoria da Conquista, BA. The experimental design was a randomized block with factorial arrangement represented by five concentrations of paclobutrazol (0, 50, 100, 150 and 200 mg L-1) applied in the soil and two water regimes (with and without water restriction) in five replicates. At 120 days after the application of plant growth regulator was evaluated the water status, the SPAD index and the morphological characteristics of plants. The application of paclobutrazol reduced the SPAD index and individual leaf area, and favored the water status of coffee plants under water restriction. The young coffee plants without water restriction and treated with the plant growth regulator, had higher leaf retention and SPAD index, and lowest individual leaf area. Paclobutrazol at high concentrations resulted in plants more compact. The water restriction provided less total leaf area, number of branches and dry weight of the coffee.
