The rock ‘n’ roll of knowledge co-production

The governance of modern science requires a heightened sensitivity to societal issues in relation to, and in particular within, the life sciences. Current opinion about practices, potential achievements and applications of genomics research oscillates between hope and fear; promise and realization; intended and unintended consequences; knowledge and non-knowledge; understanding and misunderstanding—on all sides, including scientists. Governments, research funding agencies and industry seem to have learnt, to some extent, that what was once fittingly called “organized irresponsibility” (Beck, 1995) must be transformed into ‘organized responsibility’ if scientific research, new therapies and diagnostics, improved health care, and new consumer products and services are to stand any chance of being accepted by society.

Zur Unüberwindbarkeit kultureller Differenz : grundlagentheoretische Reflexionen

Was ist darunter zu verstehen, wenn von einem Aufeinandertreffen der Kulturen die Rede ist? Was genau wird postuliert, wenn von »Kosmopolitisierung«, »Amalgamierung« oder »Hybridisierung« der Kulturen die Rede ist? Zur Beantwortung dieser und ahnlicher Fragestellungen wird hier das Phanomen der »kulturellen Differenz« ausgehend von empirischen Erkenntnissen grundlagentheoretisch reflektiert. Das Problem der kulturellen Differenz wird von der Konstitution des subjektiven Bewusstseins und den praktischen Problemen intersubjektiven Verstehens her aufgerollt. Vorgestellt werden materiale Analysen zur Herausbildung »kultureller Differenz«, deren Erkenntnisse sozialtheoretisch gedeutet werden konnen.

The Discontinuation of Socio-Technical Systems as a Governance Problem

Abandonment of socio-technical systems occurs more often than one would expect. Companies cancel the development, production or support/service of devices, technologies and even established systems. For example, in 2011, Siemens exited from building nuclear power plants; and even a state agency like NASA has a long track of stopping systems before or after start-up. Yet, we know little about how socio-technical systems cease to exist and what it means to discontinue incumbent socio-technical systems actively. As purposeful transitional change is hard to achieve (Markard et al., 2012), how difficult is it then to abandon existing systems purposefully? Bringing a system to an end might be taken for granted as just a side aspect of change – if one is interested in the entire transition trajectory including the fading out of old and the rise of new systems or their parts. Purposeful discontinuation could none the less turn out to be an essential element of creating a basis for change in general and for implementing it in particular. A better understanding of the conditions, forms, roles, effects and limits of the governance of abandoning longstanding socio-technical systems is a relevant question sui generis, and it can also contribute to a better insight into the governance of systems change in general. Our point of departure is the observation that the governance of socio-technical systems (Hekkert et al., 2007; Bergek et al., 20073) has preferentially been perceived and associated with advancement and innovation.

Phänomenologie und Soziologie : theoretische Positionen, aktuelle Problemfelder und empirische Umsetzungen

Der Band erortert die Bedeutung der Phanomenologie fur die Soziologie. Die 35 Autorinnen und Autoren erkunden und diskutieren die Anregungen, Chancen und Ertrage phanomenologischen Denkens fur die Sozialtheorie ebenso wie fur die empirische Sozialforschung. Hierzu werden in dem Band Beitrage zu soziologischen Begriffs- und Theorieproblemen, zu methodisch-methodologischen Aspekten und zu aktuellen Gegenwartsfragen versammelt. Diese vermitteln nicht nur einen umfassenden Uberblick uber den augenblicklichen Stand einer in der Soziologie in jungster Zeit wieder verstarkt gefuhrten Auseinandersetzung mit der Phanomenologie, sondern sie beziehen auch pointiert Stellung innerhalb dieser Debatte. Denn bei aller Unterschiedlichkeit der Fragestellungen und Herangehensweisen eint die Autorinnen und Autoren die Einsicht in die konstitutive Bedeutung der Subjektivitat fur aktuelle soziologische Frage- und Problemstellungen

Phänomenologische und handlungstheoretische Reflektionen zum eigenen Jazzspiel als soziale Praxis

Improvisation ist fur den Jazz und zahlreiche andere Musikgattungen zentral. Derzeit wird improvisatorisches Handeln in der deutschen Musik–, Wissens– und Kultursoziologie auch als allgemeine Handlungsform und als handlungstheoretisches Konzept entdeckt (vgl. Kurt/Naumann 2008; Figueroa-Dreher 2008a, b; Schubert 2006: 223 ff.; Stegmaier 2009: 291 ff., 399 ff.). Damit einher geht unter anderem die Hoff nung auf Weiterentwicklung bestehender Handlungstheorien. In der Organisationsforschung versucht man mit dem Improvisationstopos, Modelle fur Innovation, Kreativitat und Veranderung zu propagieren, mitunter auch, die Freiheitsgrade von Akteuren in Organisationssettings auszuleuchten.

Futures of science with and for society: towards transformative policy orientations

Purpose How to derive policy implications from five future scenarios of transformed research and innovation (R&I) systems? This paper analyzes methodological and content issues of five future scenarios of transformed R&I systems. The aim of this paper is to provide an outlook on strategic policies capable of facilitating or moderating these transformative changes in R&I practices is discussed in light of overarching intentions to foster “responsible” ambitions (in Europe and beyond, discussed as responsible research and innovation, RRI). Design/methodology/approach The paper elaborates a four-step methodology to assess the scenario’s policy implications: first, by articulating the scenario implications for six core dimensions of RI second, an RRI assessment framework is developed to assess in each scenario opportunities and limitations for transforming RI the third involves a cross-scenario analysis of similarities and differences between the scenarios, allowing the identification of robust policy options that make sense in more than one scenario. The last analytical step includes again the richness of the individual scenario assessments aiming to provide a broader outlook on transformative policy orientations. Findings The paper concludes with outlining the contours of a future-responsible R&I system together with some suggestions for transformative policy orientations that aim to govern the R&I system towards such a future, as a source of inspiration and reflection. Research limitations/implications The analysis is based on five future scenarios that do not systematically cover future developments external to the R&I system. Practical Implications An outlook of strategic policies capable of facilitating or moderating these transformative changes in R&I practices is discussed in light of the overarching European Union goal of encouraging the performance of RRI. Originality/value This paper provides inspirational anticipatory strategic intelligence for fostering the responsible ambitions of research with and for society

Die hermeneutische Interpretation multisprachlicher Daten in transnationalen Forschungskontexten

Sozialforschung kann sich der Transnationalisierung ihrer Forschungsgegenstande und Arbeitskontexte nicht entziehen. Man kann der Befremdung des eigenen Verstehens schon nicht ausweichen, wenn man sich in Forschungskontexten bewegt, in deren Orientierungsrahmen man bereits einsozialisiert ist, um uberhaupt wissenschaftlich relevante Aussagen uber alltagliche Plausibilitaten und Selbstverstandlichkeiten hinaus machen zu konnen

Normative Praxis: konstitutions- und konstruktionsanalytische Grundlagen

Talcott Parsons grundet seine funktionale Handlungstheorie in Anschluss an Emile Durkheim auf die Annahme, dass kulturelle Werte und Normen ein internalisiertes System von Symbolen bilden, das von allen Gesellschaftsmitgliedern geteilt wird und ebenso den Verlauf wie den Sinn und die Legitimation von Handlungen steuere. Alfred Schutz konterte diese Auffassung von Parsons zu ›normativen Werten‹ bekannterweise mit dem Hinweis, es gebe keine Norm, die nicht in Bestandteile oder Mittel zerlegt und auch Gegenstand der subjektiven Wahl zwischen Realisieren oder Verwerfen werden kann (Schutz & Parsons 1977: 47). Ebenfalls im Gegensatz zu Parsons Annahme, dass Gesellschaft auf Normativitat grundet, und nun mit Blick auf die soziohistorische Dimension, fuhrt (1987) die These des Funktionsverlustes der universalen Moral an, wonach moderne, hochdifferenzierte Gesellschaften gerade das Auseinandertreten divergierender Gruppen- und Sondermoralen verkraften mussen (vgl. Bergmann & Luckmann 1999: 33). Wenn dies zutrifft, kann sich eine moderne Gesellschaft freilich nicht auf einer streng eindimensionalen ›Generalmoral‹ grunden, obwohl normative gesellschaftliche Faktoren, wenn sie effektiv funktionieren, eine relativ spontane soziale Ordnung garantieren.
