Only 10–20% of adults in industrialized countries reach the health‐related minimum level of a consumption of energy of more than 800 kcal week−1, additional to activities of daily living. The objective of this longitudinal study was to evaluate the impact of a health‐promoting exercise program for sedentary adults on medical and subjective health status and on behavioral changes. The first 12 months of the study (t1–t2) consisted of a structured intervention exercise program. After this period, participants had the opportunity to stay in a follow‐up‐program or to change to other programs of the same club for further 12 months (t2–t3). Within these 2 years data have been collected from the intervention group (117 subjects) and control group (40 subjects). It can be shown that on the basis of a structured intervention (one session per week, 90 min, for 1 year), a stable behavioral change is reached with positive effects on fitness status, risk factors and mental health. Contrary to findings in other studies, the average health effects are at least stable in the second year in this study.

Abstract The aim of the study was to examine the relationships between physical activity and several health parameters in German adolescents. We predicted that the association between physical activity and physical and psychosocial health resources (physical and psychosocial characteristics that tend to enhance coping and well-being) would be stronger than the association between physical activity and health deficits. This research is based on a large representative, cross-sectional study (the German Health Interview and Examination Survey [KiGGS] and the Motoric-Module [MoMo]). Health was assessed using medical parameters, motor fitness data, and questionnaire data for various health-related parameters. To assess physical activity, the participants answered questions regarding the duration and intensity of weekly physical activity in leisure and organized sports. We tested our assumptions using a representative sample (N=2291; 50.5% boys) of German adolescents aged 11–17 years. Participants were classified as physically inactive (16.7%), somewhat active (24.7%), medium active (19.8%), active (14.4%) or highly active (24.4%), based on the duration and intensity of their weekly physical activity. In support of our hypothesis, the data revealed that the amount of physical activity explains up to 12.6% in the variance of physical and psychosocial health resources, but only 2.5% of the variance in physical and psychosocial health deficits. We conclude that the relationship between physical activity and health among adolescents should not only be viewed as a way of reducing health deficits, but should also focus on the enhancement of physical and psychosocial resources.

The objective of this longitudinal study was to evaluate the effects of a structured 12-month exercise program and the follow-up period of 2 years in terms of medical and subjective health status, fitness, and behavioral factors of former sedentary adults. With data of 159 subjects from intervention and control groups, it can be shown that a stable behavioral change is reached with positive effects on fitness status, risk factors, and mental health. Three years after the beginning, 76% of the original intervention group were still physically active. After 1 year of intervention, the subjects of the exercise program profited significantly by different risk factors, fitness parameters, psychosocial resources, and subjective health status. Participants in a negative fitness and health condition prior to the intervention benefited the most; the others at least stabilized their status. Contrary to other studies, the average health effects were at least stable in the 2-years follow-up period.

Physical activities are particularly health effective when they are structured and systematically organized, for example, with respect to a dose-response relationship or to psychosocial aspects. Which insights can be gained from scientific knowledge on the structure of physical activities? Which health-related goals can be sought with different physical activities in the field of sport? Which target groups can be reached with these kinds of sport? These questions are addressed in this article on the basis of current scientific knowledge-to promote the development of health-enhancing physical activities especially in sport federations, but also to create a communication platform between the sport and the health sector. The work of researchers in this field is focused mainly on health-enhancing physical activity, but they are also engaged in health-related scientific organizations and in sport federations.
