The aim of this study was to describe the harnessing of corneas captured and processed for transplantation in an ocular tissue bank in north-eastern Brazil. This was a transverse and retrospective study, with a sample group of 612 individuals whose corneas were do- nated and captured between January/2007 and July/2012. This study was approved by the Research Ethics Committee under number 007.0.294.000-10, and research was based on an instrument consisting of social, demographic and clinical data of the donors. Of the 1209 corneas captured, 868 were used and 341 were discarded. Of the 612 donors, the corneas of 597 (97.5%) were captured from both eyes, being that 423 (70.9%) of these corneas were used. Further studies are required on the reasons for discarding corneas and clarifications as to the conduct of professionals when processing corneas, considering the increase in the quantity of donors and the elevated number of discarded ocular tissue.

Background Venous ulcers constitute an important public health problem as they can cause disability with consequences for multiple dimensions of quality of life. Objective To describe the quality of life in patients with venous leg ulcer treated in primary care in two cities from Brazil and Portugal. Methods This was a cross-sectional comparative study with a non-probabilistic sample of 171 patients with venous leg ulcers who were treated in primary care in two cities from Brazil and Portugal, namely, Natal and Évora. A form covering sociodemographic and health data and the Medical Outcomes Study 36-Item Short-Form Health Survey were used, and descriptive and inferential analyses were performed. Results Significant differences in age and income were observed between the two samples. Patients with venous leg ulcer from Brazil had lower income and were younger than those from Portugal. Quality of life scores were significantly higher in Portugal for the physical aspects, pain, and social functioning, among domains, and for the physical health dimension and total score of QOL. Conclusion The quality of life was better in Portugal than in Brazil and the differences between the countries need further investigation.

To analyze the correlation between self-efficacy, self-esteem and adherence to treatment with the Charing Cross Venous Ulcer Questionnaire in people with Venous Ulcer in Primary Health Care. This is a cross-sectional, descriptive and quantitative study, carried out between February and September 2014 at the Primary Health Care of the city of Natal, Rio Grande do Norte, Brazil, with 101 people with VU. A structured form of sociodemographic, health and care characterization; Charing Cross Venous Ulcer Questionnaire; Self-efficacy Scale for Chronic Pain; Multidimensional Therapeutic Adherence Scale; Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale were used to collect data. The data were tabulated in Microsoft Excel and exported to the Statistical Package for Social Sciences 20.0, in which descriptive and inferential analyses were performed. There were weak to moderate correlations, mostly positive, with significance only between the “emotional state” of Quality of Life and the “Healthy lifestyle” of adherence to treatment. About the correlations of the Charing Cross Venous Ulcer Questionnaire domains with the domains of self-efficacy, self-esteem, there were negative correlations between weak and moderate and significant. Self-efficacy, self-esteem and adherence to treatment showed a correlation with Quality of Life. There is a need to address them in the health evaluation of the person with VU, seeking to impact on a better quality of life.

Nowadays, the varicose ulcers (VUs) are one of the most worrying leg ulcers and are an important global health problem, with high costs related to the treatment and its complications. Moreover, the quality of life (QOL) of the patient could be affected by pain, sleep disorders, functional impairment, depression, and isolation. The VU patient care is complex, and it is necessary to know the aspects that contribute to the healing process for developing effective strategies. The members of the multidisciplinary health team should identify sociodemographic, clinical, and care aspects that interfere in tissue repair and therefore impacting the QOL. Self-efficacy, adherence to treatment, and self-esteem are other important aspects also related to healing and QOL, with implications for health care and the multidisciplinary team. To sum up, the use of multidisciplinary protocols allows the systematization of care for people with VUs in order to standardize therapeutic interventions with the aim to decrease the healing process time and, as a consequence, to improve the QOL.

1Universidade do Estado do Rio Grande do Norte, Caicó/RN, Brasil. 2Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Norte, Natal/RN, Brasil.
