The objective of this study was to verify the effects of the decongestive physiotherapy (DP) in the healing of venous ulcers. It is an interventionist, and almost experimental, study with the participation of 20 clients who were divided into 2 groups: the control group (n=10) and the intervention group (n=10). Clients from the first group were only treated with conventional dressing and those in the second group were treated with conventional dressing and decongestive physiotherapy (association of techniques: manual lymph drainage, compressive bandaging, elevation of the lower limbs, myolymphokinetic exercises and skin care). Both groups were treated during six months. The clients submitted to DP presented significant reduction of the edema and the pain, besides an improvement in the healing process. Results allowed to verify that the decongestive therapy stimulated the healing process of venous ulcers, improving the quality of life of the subjects.

INTRODUCTION: The field of home physical therapy care has expanded to realize the importance of the home context for the care of patients. In this setting, the physical therapist makes an evaluation and elaborates a care plan outlining a physical and functional diagnosis at the home level, which provides more comfort and mobility for the patient that can be restricted to bed or be incapable to move to seek care in specialized clinics. The home care approach demands of this professional the development of broader way of seeing a patient that understands the home context and the nuances of parental relationships to implement a methodology of care with the family, which transforms this setting in a potential space of care. Such approach, however, faces difficulties for its theoretical and practice fundamentalization, due to the lack of knowledge existent because of the shortage of publications about this issue in the most important databases, which makes difficult to proof the efficacy of this service. OBJECTIVES: The objective of this study is to publish the results found about the state of the art in the field of home physical therapy care. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This study was based on an extensive literature review performed on the Capes Journals Portal, BIREME, MEDLINE, LILACS, SciELO and also on Google Scholar from the years of 1998 to 2008, using the following key words: family, home, home physical therapy, physical therapy, and home care. RESULTS: The preliminary results showed the need of more research in this area and the importance of studying the theme of home physical therapy care.

Background Pain and oedema are common symptoms in patients with venous ulcers. Objectives To evaluate the benefits of lymphotherapy as an additional intervention to compression therapy in venous ulcer treatment. Methods Quasi-experimental study comparing lymphotherapy in combination with compression therapy (intervention) to dressings alone (control) for venous ulcer treatment. The outcomes of the study were pain, oedema and healing. The sample comprised of 67 venous ulcer patients in total, with 31 allocated to the intervention group and 36 to the control group. The instruments included a sociodemographic form, physiotherapy assessment, numerical pain rating scale, Godet test and a wound contraction measurement. Results The intervention group demonstrated a significant reduction in pain intensity (P>0.001), oedema (P>0.001) and ulcer area (P=0.004), and a significant increase in ulcer contraction (P>0.001) when compared with the control group at the end of 6 months. Conclusions The intervention group showed a significant reduction in pain and oedema, and a significant improvement in wound healing when compared to the control group from the third month of treatment, thus confirming the benefits of this therapy.
