Cone-beam computed tomography findings of impacted upper canines

Purpose To describe the features of impacted upper canines and their relationship with adjacent structures through three-dimensional cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) images. Materials and Methods Using the CBCT scans of 79 upper impacted canines, we evaluated the following parameters: gender, unilateral/bilateral occurrence, location, presence and degree of root resorption of adjacent teeth (mild, moderate, or severe), root dilaceration, dental follicle width, and presence of other associated local conditions. Results Most of the impacted canines were observed in females (56 cases), unilaterally (51 cases), and at a palatine location (53 cases). Root resorption in adjacent teeth and root dilaceration were observed in 55 and 47 impacted canines, respectively. In most of the cases, the width of the dental follicle of the canine was normal; it was abnormally wide in 20 cases. A statistically significant association was observed for all variables, except for root dilaceration (p=0.115) and the side of impaction (p=0.260). Conclusion Root resorption of adjacent teeth was present in most cases of canine impaction, mostly affecting adjacent lateral incisors to a mild degree. A wide dental follicle of impacted canines was not associated with a higher incidence of external root resorption of adjacent teeth.

A Case of Unusual Anatomy: Maxillary Central Incisor with Two Root Canals

El exito de los tratamientos de endodoncia solo puede conseguirse mediante una completa asepsia, el modelado y la obturacion del canal radicular. Por ello, los tratamientos de endodoncia requieren de un completo y detallado conocimiento de la anatomia interna y externa de los canales radiculares y de sus variantes. Este tipo de tratamiento puede realizarse en canales radiculares que no coincidan con las caracteristicas anatomicas normales descritas como patron por la literatura. La anatomia interna de los incisivos centrales superiores es bien conocida, presentando normalmente un canal radicular unico. En este relato se describen los tratamientos endodoncicos de incisivo central superior con dos canales radiculares.

Exatidão e precisão das réguas milimetradas utilizadas durante procedimentos endodônticos

Introduction : The use of millimeter rules is of fundamental importance for the proper conduct in the various stages of endodontic treatment. The professional should be concerned by the accuracy and precision of these instruments in order to avoid possible measurement errors and interpretation able to frustrate the endodontic therapy. Objective: This study was aimed to evaluate the accuracy and precision of millimeter rulers sold in Brazil used during endodontic procedures and evaluate the use and preference of this instrument by professionals working in this area. Methodology: Preliminarily, experts and graduate students in endodontics were consulted regarding the use and the brand preference for millimeter rules. In parallel, a hundred rulers have been selected divided into ten groups of ten units each, according to the manufacturer and the type of material used. Each ruler was measured in 30 mm by means of an electronic digital caliper, and the accuracy assessed by comparing the rulers with a gold-standard ruler credited by the Laboratory of Metrology – MEC-Q/BA. As for the accuracy the results were compared between the units of each group. Results: The questionnaire applied revealed that 19.23% of respondents did not know how to refer to the rulers’ brands used and 23.07% reported using more than one millimeter ruler to perform endodontic procedures. A millimeter ruler produced by Maillefer was the most cited by respondents, followed by Intermedium and Microdont. Evaluation of rulers produced by Maillefer revealed greater accuracy, while the greatest accuracy was accredited to rulers produced by JON. The ruler made of polymer by Maquira was considered the least accurate and precise. Conclusion: As the millimeter endodontic rulers analyzed were neither precise nor accurate, the Professional should use the same ruler throughout treatment.

Estudo da Ação do Edta Sobre a Camada Residual no Tempo de 1 e 3 Minutos

Objeti vo: Analisar, in vitro, atraves da Microscopia Eletronica de Varredura, o efeito do EDTA nas concentracoes de 3%, 5%, 10% e 17%, na remocao da camada residual e na desobstrucao dos tubulos denti narios, nos tempos de 1 e 3 minutos. Metodo: Da amostra consti tuida de 80 dentes, foram selecionadas, randomicamente, oito unidades para compor o grupo controle negati vo (GC1) e 8 para consti tuirem o grupo controle positi vo (GC2). Os 64 restantes compuseram os oito Grupos Experimentais (GExp.). Apos a instrumentacao do canal radicular foi realizada a irrigacao fi nal com as solucoes de EDTA em teste, sendo considerados os tempos de 1 minuto e 3 minutos de permanencia deste em contato com a superfi cie denti naria. Resultados: A analise das fotomicrografi as com magnitude de 2000X, revelam que as solucoes de EDTA a 10% e 17% foram as mais efi cazes, independente dos tempos de aplicacao pre- determinados. Conclusao: A respeito da remocao da camada residual e da desobstrucao dos tubulos denti narios do canal radicular, que a efi cacia do EDTA nao se altera com o aumento do tempo de aplicacao nos tempos de 1 minuto ou 3 minutos.
