Conflict in nursing management in the hospital context

This qualitative study aimed to analyze how conflicts manifest in interpersonal relations and the dimensions they assume in nursing management in hospitals. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews with 13 nurse managers from hospitals in the interior of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. Content analysis was used to interpret the results. Among the results, it was highlighted that: a) 11 of the 13 nurses have been managers for more than 80% of their time since graduation and expressed that they had no idea about the management role before taking up this function; b) the nurses consider that conflicts are immanent in the organization, entailing the need to live and interact with them; c) internal conflicts showed to be the most determining for the managers. There is a need to understand the origin of conflicts and factors favoring their establishment, as well as to acknowledge the importance of an interdisciplinary response.Este e um estudo qualitativo, cujo objetivo foi analisar como os conflitos se manifestam nas relacoes interpessoais e a magnitude que assumem no exercicio gerencial do enfermeiro, em hospitais. Os dados foram coletados por meio de entrevista semiestruturada com 13 enfermeiras gerentes de hospitais, do interior do Rio Grande do Sul. Para a interpretacao dos resultados, utilizou-se a tecnica de analise de conteudo. Entre os resultados, destacaram-se: a) 11 das 13 enfermeiras estao na funcao de gerente ha mais de 80% do periodo apos a graduacao e expressaram que nao tinham ideia sobre o papel gerencial antes de assumir a funcao; b) as enfermeiras compreendem que os conflitos sao imanentes a organizacao, sendo necessario conviver e interagir com eles e c) os conflitos internos revelaram-se como os mais marcantes para as gerentes. E preciso compreender a origem dos conflitos, os fatores que favorecem sua instalacao e reconhecer a importância de aborda-los interdisciplinarmente.

Managerial Communication in Hospital Nursing: Obstacles and Strategies to Overcome Them

Aim: understanding communication difficulties facing nurses in their general duties in a hospital context and the strategies used to overcome these difficulties. Method: a descriptive study using a qualitative approach which included 19 nurses from a university hospital, using a vignette and semi-structured interviews for collecting data and thematic analysis as the technique for data analysis. Results: the participants considered the main difficulties were: fragmentation of work processes; work shifts; resistance to change and work team involvement. In light of these problems, a number of workshops and training programs were held covering topics such as communication, formalization of actions/conduct, and optimization of written/verbal communication. Conclusion: the study shows the nurses’ need to improve their managerial communication skills by understanding the importance of interpersonal relations and skills in dealing with people.

El conflicto en la gerencia de enfermería: un análisis de la producción científica brasileña

Este articulo tuvo como objetivos identificar y analizar la produccion cientifica de la enfermeria brasilena sobre los conflictos, destacando las investigaciones acerca de los conflictos en la gerencia de enfermeria. Se trata de una investigacion bibliografica de los resumenes de las tesis de maestria y doctorado compiladas por el Centro de Investigaciones en Enfermeria de la Asociacion Brasilera de Enfermeria. Se encontraron 145 estudios con la palabra conflicto (en la busqueda, se utilizo la palabra en portugues: conflito) en su titulo o en el cuerpo del resumen. Se utilizo el analisis de contenido para clasificar los trabajos en tres universos sociales que demuestran la presencia de conflictos en el trabajo de enfermeria: uno relacionado con la ensenanza; otro, con el equipo de asistencia; y, el ultimo, con la comunidad usuaria. Trece estudios abordaban el tema conflicto en la gerencia de enfermeria. Se propone una reflexion sobre el fenomeno del conflicto con la finalidad de interpretarlo en el ejercicio gerencial del enfermero. O CONFLITO NA ATIVIDADE GERENCIAL DO ENFERMEIRO

O trabalho do enfermeiro no âmbito gerencial e marcado por importantes avancos e, tambem por conflitos. Neste contexto, este estudo e produto das discussoes e reflexoes realizadas na Disciplina Gestao em Saude e Enfermagem,do Programa de Pos Graduacao – Mestrado em Enfermagem da UFSM, no primeiro semestre de 2011, e tem por objetivo apresentar e discutir os conceitos, classificacao e estagios dos conflitos e, como eles se fazem presentesno cotidiano do enfermeiro. Observa-se o deslocamento do enfermeiro da area operacional para as estrategicas daorganizacao e, nessas circunstâncias ele trabalha com situacoes complexas do setor produtivo e se depara comconflitos, visto que conduz multiplas relacoes de uma equipe multiprofissional. Pensar a atividade gerencial doenfermeiro requer pensar em um cenario de crescentes e profundas mudancas gerenciais e de novos referenciais do sistema de gestao, um cenario complexo, dinâmico e necessario reconhecimento de trata-lo interdisciplinarmente.

The conflict in the nurse managing exercise in hospital context – preview note.

This work is the result of a masters dissertation project developed in Post-Graduation Program in Nursing from the Federal University of Santa Maria (UFSM). It has the objective to analyze the conception of conflict in nurses’ management exercise in hospital context, as well as to infer the strategies used by them to solve such conflicts. Based on it, one aimed to attempt to the variation assumed by this phenomenon in the range of nurse management exercise in the universe of a hospital type health organization. The semi-structured interview and the focal group, with the identification of the participants, will be used as the collection instruments according to the Resolution 196/96. Based on data recurrence, that will be interpreted using the content analysis technique, one intend to discuss how the conflict has been managed by the nurses and what is the understanding they have about this phenomenon which directly affects their actions even when they deny it.
