Four functions to characterize scrotal circumference (SC) growth in Nellore bulls were compared to identify which was the most suitable for biological interpretation. Nellore bulls (n = 532), born between September and December of 1992 to 1994 were used in the study. Measurements were made on fixed dates in January, April, July and October of each year. At the time of SC measurements, the ages of the bulls ranged from 200 to 1300 d. The functions used to describe the data were: Brody, SC = A (1 - B exp -kt); Logistic, SC = A/(1 + B exp -kt); Gompertz, SC = A exp(-B exp -kt) and Richards SC = A (1 + B exp -kt)m, where SC is the scrotal circumference at t days of age, A is the estimated SC at maturity, B is the integration constant established by the initial values of SC and t, k is the maturity constant, which equals the ratio between the maximum rate of growth and SC at maturity; m is the inflection point parameter for Richards function, which did not converge. The Brody, Gompertz and Logistic functions fitted the data in a similar fashion, with similar values for the statistics EMS and R2, and they reached convergence with similar computational costs. The Logistic function presented the best pattern of average prediction error, and therefore, it was selected for biological interpretation. For the Logistic function, estimated SC at maturity (A) was 37.95 cm at 72 mo of age. The maturity index (k) was .11 cm, and the inflection point (time of maximum growth) was reached at 13.09 mo of age at an average SC of 18.97 cm.

G. E. Freneau; V. R Vale Filho; A.P. Marques Júnior; W. S. Maria

Twenty three 10-months-old Nellore bulls, raised under pasture conditions in Brazil, were used to study puberty. Monthly measurement of scrotal circumference and testicular width and length were recorded. Semen was collected by eletroejaculation and evaluated according to physical and morphological aspects. Penile and prepuce detachment percentages were also evaluated. The ages of the presence of first spermatozoa in the ejaculate (ISEM1), first motile spermatozoa in the ejaculate (ISEM2), seminal puberty (IDPUB) and detachment between penile and prepuce (IDPPRE) were calculated. Scores of breeding soundness were measured. ISEM1, ISEM2, IDPUB and IDPPRE were 13.1±2.2, 13.6±2.3, 14.8±1.8 and 18.1±1.9 months, respectively. At 16 months of age, the animals presented 91.4%, 82.6% and 73.9% with ISEM1, ISEM2 and IDPUB reached, respectively. High positive correlation were observed between age and corporal and testicular growth or seminal physical aspects. Negative correlation was verified between age and spermatic defects. High negative correlation was observed between age and score of scrotal circumference at puberty (-0.7;7 P<0.001). Precocious puberty was observed before 15 months of age. From ISEM1 to IDPUB, 51 days were elapsed. Young bulls with larger testicles reached puberty earlier.

Genetic, environmental and phenotypic correlations between libido, testicular measurements, body weight and semen traits were estimated by multiple-trait-restricted maximum likelihood (MTDFREML) under animal models. Reproductive records, collected from 1992 to 1997, of 288 Nellore bulls were used. Estimates of heritability for libido unadjusted, adjusted for scrotal circumference and adjusted for body weight, were 0.34 +/- 0.10, 0.31 +/- 0.10, and 0.19 +/- 0.11, respectively. Genetic correlations between libido and body weight, scrotal circumference, testis length, testis width, testis volume and testis consistency were, respectively, 0.69, -0.43, -0.31, -0.16, 0.10, 0.87, and between libido and semen volume, sperm motility, vigor, gross motility, major, minor and total defects were, respectively, 0.71, 0.51, 0.12, 0.16, 0.31, 0.26 and 0.43. Results suggested that selection for libido would be effective and that it would lead to desirable correlated response for scrotal circumference, physical and morphological semen traits and undesirable correlated response in body weight.

Heritabilities and genetic correlations between performance and reproductive traits were estimated using Multiple Trait Derivative-Free Restricted Maximum Likelihood methodology in 579 pasture-raised Nelore bulls that were 19 to 39 months of age. Traits were breeding soundness evaluation (BSE), scrotal circumference (SC), testicular consistency (TC), testicular volume (TV), testicular shape (TS), length and width of right and left testicles, and semen traits including motility (Mot), vigor (Vig), major (MD) sperm defects, minor (mD) sperm defects and total (TD) sperm defects. Heritability estimates were 0.46; 0.10; 0.08; 0.16; 0.09; 0.11 and 0.10 for TC, Mot, Vig, MD, mD, TD and BSE, respectively. Genetic correlations between SC and: body weight (BW), TV, Mot, Vig, mD, TD and BSE were 0.72; 0.99; 0.72; 0.60; -0.67; -0.12 and 0.64, respectively, showing favorable associations between SC and the other traits. Genetic correlations between BSE and: BW, TV, MD and TD were 0.19; 0.71; -0.47 and -0.58, respectively. Results suggest that selection for body weight in Nelore bulls should not hamper fertility, nor should selection for reproductive traits hamper growth.

M.C. Anchieta; V. R Vale Filho; E. Colosimo; Ivan Barbosa Machado Sampaio; Venício José de Andrade

Semen characteristics from 250 Zebu and 144 European bulls were described and compared among season and species. All bulls were selected as donors and during five years were always stationed at an Artificial Insemination Center in Southeast of Brazil, where temperatures were above 19o C in both dry and rainy seasons. Contingency tables and Tukeys test were used to check associations and to compare group means, respectively. Semen from European breeds showed higher swirl, motility and concentration values than those of Zebu breeds (P<0.05). Semen volume was higher for Zebu breeds (P<0.05). There were more discarded ejaculates in the rainy season (P<0.05). A major cause for discarding ejaculates was undesirable physical characteristics for the Zebu and morphological characteristics for the European breeds (P<0.05). Semen freezing ability values for the European breeds were higher.

Andrologic (n=163) and semen freezing (n=55) parameters from young Nelore bulls were evaluated for two consecutive years, as well as their associations searching for andrologic markers for high fertility and semen freezing. Differences in andrologic profiles (P<0.05) between years were registered, reflecting the success of semen freezing, even after andrologic selection. Percentages of 26.6 and 19.5 of discharged ejaculates, pre and post-freezing, respectively, were recorded, due to physical semen parameters. Overall sperm motility, vigor, and viability means were, respectively, 66.4±5.7%, 4.8±0.4, and 76.3±8.5% pre-freezing; and 29.4±8.5%, 4.6±0.6, and 34.5±11.1% post-freezing. The post-freezing recovery mean was 44.5±13.4%. Significant correlations (P<0.05) between body weight and pre-freezing sperm motility (0.43) and post-freezing sperm recovery standard (-0.50) were estimated. Correlations were also observed (P<0.05) between volume of ejaculate and age (0.50), sperm motility (0.28), total sperm defects (-0.32), and post-freezing sperm recovery standard (-0.37). The correlation between sperm concentration and post-freezing sperm recovery standard was 0.42. Significant correlations (P<0.05) between testes shape and scrotal circumference (0.58), and total sperm defects (0.33) and vesicular gland area (0.43) were also observed.

Body weight (BW), scrotal circumference (SC), semen characteristics and Breeding Soundness Evaluation-Zebu (BSE-Z) of 516 young Tabapua breed bulls, raised under different feeding regimen, were evaluated for one year old bulls (12-17 months of age) and two year old bulls (21-27 month of age). The feed regimens were the following: feeding regimen 1 - animals raised under pasture condition plus mineral supplementation, feeding regimen 2 - animals raised under pasture condition and supplemented during the dry season with sugar cane and urea (0.5%) plus 2kg/animal/day of a commercial concentrate (84%NDT and18% crude protein) fed twice a day, and feeding regimen 3 - feed lot animals fed balanced diets with the following composition: sugar cane, elephantgrass, urea (0.5%) and commercial concentrate (88%NDT and 19%crude protein) varying from 2kg/animal/day for young animals to 6kg/animal/day at adult age (27 months), fed three times a day. One year old animals on feeding regimen 3 were heavier (BW=416kg), and had higher (P<0,05) scrotal circumference (29.6cm), semen volume (5.7ml) and spermatic motility (42%) than animals on feed regimens 1 and 2. No difference between animals on feeding regimens 1 and 2 were observed for BW (232.44 and 279.34kg), scrotal circumference (20.02cm and 22.16cm), semen volume (2 and 2.12ml), and spermatic motility (14.17% and 20.27%), respectively. Two years old animals on feeding regimen 3 were heavier (BW=490.82kg), and had higher scrotal circumference (SC=33.56cm) and andrologic classification (ACP=71.71) than animals on feeding regimens 1 and 2, which showed, BW (378.91 and 409.2kg), SC (30.66 and 30.31cm) and ACP (63.55 and 66.05), respectively. Difference between animals on feeding regimen 3 and animals on regimens 1 and 2 were observed for BW, SC and SV. Mature animals showed BW=497.5kg, SC=33.81cm and SV=4,83ml. Animals on feeding regimen 1 (BW=388.53kg, SC=30.81cm and SV=2.92ml), were not statistically different from animals on feeding regimen 2 (BW=412.32kg, SC=31.56 cm and SV=3.93ml). Immature animals were heavier (BW=479.22kg) and had higher SC (SC=32.96cm) on feeding regimen 3, than animals on feeding regimen 1 (BW=367.36 and SC=29,56cm), and animals on feeding regimen 2 (BW=402.69kg and SC=29.55cm). Feed supplementation influences reproductive performance, and shows positive effect on body weight, scrotal circumference, physicals characteristics of semen and BSE of young Tabapua bulls.

Efeito dos fixadores formalina e Bouin na preservação de biópsias do endométrio de éguas após inclusão em resina plástica

D. Amaral; H. Chiarini-Garcia; V. R Vale Filho; W.R. Allen

Endometrial biopsies were performed in 16 mares at estrus and diestrus and tissues were processed for light microscopy using formalin or Bouin fixatives and plastic resin glycol methacrylate for embedding. Results of the tissue processing demonstrated that the luminal and glandular epithelium, connective tissue fibers and many cell types present in the lamina propria such as fibroblasts, plasmocytes, mast cells and macrophages were best preserved in formalin fixed samples. The luminal epithelium showed increased shrinkage in Bouin fixed specimens when compared to formalin fixed ones. Those morphological findings were present throughout the estral cycle. The formalin fixation procedure associated with plastic resin embedding yielded increased tissue resolution as seen by light microscopy, and allowed a more accurate cytological study of the endometrium of the mare.

Semen cryopreservation from eight young dairy Gyr bulls was performed using two different semen extenders. Bulls aging 25 months old and pre-selected for a high average score (84.4±5.6 in a 0-100 scale) in Zebu breeding soundness evaluation (BSE) composed the experimental group. Extenders were based on lactosis-egg yolk-glycerol and soya lecithin. Chilling and freezing curves were standardized by CRYOGEN® machine. Post-thaw features evaluated in semen frost in both extenders - motility, vigor, major, minor and total deffects, morphological alteration in acrossome, bent tail, reative cells to hyposmotic sweeling test (Thos), and normal cells - were compared to the ones in the fresh ejaculate (except Thos) and among them. It was possible to freeze semen from all animals in the lactosis-egg yolk-glycerol extender. There were difference (P 80 points) is a good index to identify bulls with good post semen - thaw features. However, the choice of the extender is critical for obtaining acceptable results

M.C.C. Araújo; V. R Vale Filho; A.M. Ferreira; W.F. Sá; J.B. Barreto Filho; L.S.A. Camargo; R. V. Serapião; M.V.G.B. Silva

The effect of cryopreservation in IFN-tau, from bovine embryos produced in vitro was evaluated. Two treated groups (G1= fresh bovine embryos, n=59 and G2= freezed embryos, n=84) were used to study the effect of cryopreservation on IFN-tau secretion. After reaching the blastocyst phase, the embryos were kept on individual culture for additional period of 7 days. On days 3 and 7 after the beginning of embryos cultivation, samples of the media culture were taken for IFN-tau secretion titration. Oocysts taken from follicles ranging from 3 to 5mm in diameter were obtained from ovaries of females at slaughterhouse. The embryos were frozen, after being dehydrated with ethylene glycol (1.8m), conditioned on 0.5ml palletes and frozen. Frozen embryos secreted lower IFN-tau than fresh embryos (P<0.05). At day 7 it was registered higher IFN-tau secretion from trophoblast than at day 3 (P<0.05). The increasing of IFN-tau secretion was observed when the blastocyst began to longed and it was directly related to the embryos development. The synthesis of IFN-tau is related to the capability of development of the blastocyst. Cryopreservation is a method that affects the maternal recognition of pregnancy and the post-freezing embryo development.
