BMW introduced a top-of-the-range two-stage exhaust gas turbocharged in-line-six power unit displacing 3.0 litres in autumn 2004, the first power unit of its kind worldwide in a passenger car. Apart from increasing specific output to 67 kW/ltr, this engine extends the useful operating speed range from the former 4000 rpm to almost 5000 rpm. The point most relevant to the customer in this respect is that this technology offers a standard of motoring performance so far achieved only with far larger eight-cylinder power units on fuel consumption in the EU test cycle of only 8.0 ltr/100 km or 29.4 mpg Imp.

The 2.0 l four-cylinder diesel engine is one of the most important engine variants for BMW in Europe. To create the best possible prerequisites for meeting the demanding requirements of the future, a completely new engine has been developed for this important segment. According to the BMW philosophy of “efficient dynamics” the new engine concept has been focused on minimising frictional loss and providing unsurpassed thermodynamic efficiency. In the first part, published in the November issue, engine mechanics and mixture formation have been discussed in detail. This second part describes measures for increasing power density and lowering weight and fuel consumption. Furthermore vehicle results are shown.

The Euro 4 emission standard is becoming mandatory in Europe for passenger cars as of January 1st 2005 (new model homologation) and 1 January 2006 (initial registration). Demanding a reduction of NOx and particle limits by 50 per cent on cars with diesel engines, this new standard represents a significant challenge in technology. BMW has now started converting its volume models ahead of time to the Euro 4 emission standard. This paper describes the technology developed for the diesel engines in the BMW 5-Series — the 525d and 530d — for the purpose of achieving the EU standard.

Particularly in the luxury performance segment, diesel engines have become very significant in Europe over the years. Serving as power units for the new BMW 7-Series, the 3.0-litre straight-six and 3.9-litre V8 diesel engines which already featured in the previous models have been fundamentally revised and updated. Like the 8-cylinder gasoline engines introduced last autumn at the launch of the new 7-Series, the two new diesel engines are combined exclusively with the latest-generation six-speed automatic transmission.
