METHOD Interviews with 24 nursing professionals were undertaken. For data analysis, Thematic Content Analysis as proposed by Bardin was applied, resulting in the following themes: the team size and its commitment to health care; professional practices and activity of the nursing team. RESULTS The size of the nursing team was considered insufficient, which compromises the quality of care and results in work overload and dissatisfaction of the nursing professionals. On the other hand, they were satisfied with the tasks performed day-to-day and related integrality to individual care, considered it essential and usually practiced it daily. CONCLUSION It is considered that the nursing team has the potential and commitment to develop their care practice combined with the integrative perspective, and therefore providing quality health care to the population.

It is still common sense the idea that the elderly do not need dental care because they are largely toothless and denture wearers. Thus the research question is: What is the reason that makes many elderly people do not see the dentist regularly? This study aimed to find and analyze the reason that makes the elderly, enrolled in a family health care center, do not visit the dentist regularly. It is a descriptive and exploratory with a quanti-qualitative approach using household semi-structured interviews applied to 149 elderly enrolled at a family Health Unity in Ribeirao Preto city, SP, Brazil. Data were analyzed and standardized by the Content Analysis technique and for the quantitative analysis it was performed bivariate analysis based on p<0.05. There was significant association between dentist visit and age (p=0,025), and it was observed that higher age elderly related going to the dentist few times. Some of the reasons were: fear, financial difficulties, absence of time, and absence of tooth pain and denture wear. It was concluded that these reasons are related to the social and cultural aspects that needs to be analyzed within the primary health care.

Dentistry currently reveals itself to be open to new ideas about the construction of meanings for oral health. This openness leads to the social production of health revealing the contextualization of the social and historical aspects of the sundry knowledge in the development of oral health for different communities. With this research, we seek to build meanings for oral health with a group of elderly people. With this objective in mind, we propose an approximation between discourses on oral health mentioned by the elderly and the Social Constructionist discourse. We interviewed 14 elderly people enrolled in a Family Health Unit in Ribeirao Preto, State of Sao Paulo, in the first semester of 2010, and identified two interpretative repertoires through Discourse Analysis, which showed the relationship between 1 - Lack of information and dental assistance in childhood, and 2 - Primary Health Care building the meaning of oral health. We concluded that Social Constructionism works epistemologically for the construction of meanings for oral health and that primary health is essential for appreciation and health care that enables the construction of meanings in oral health by the elderly that create conditions for self-care and healthy attitudes.

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to analyze the oral health status and socio-economic conditions of the elderly, which are users of the Brazilian Unified Public Health System (SUS) and its relationship to a subjective indicator of impacts of oral conditions on quality of life (Oral Health Impact Profile OHIP-14).METHODS: It is a descriptive cross-sectional exploratory study developed in the second semester of 2011. The sample consisted of 76 elderly (65-74 years old) users of the public dental service at the Dental Specialties Center at the Faculty of Dentistry of Ribeirao Preto, Brazil. The methodological strategy adopted for data collection was the structured interview and secondary data were obtained from medical records and reports. To perform the statistical analysis it was used an exploratory analysis of multivariate data by means of STATA Software.RESULTS: The frequencies of the dimensions of the OHIP-14 with the greatest impact were pain (13.16%) and psychological distress (14.47%). The low impact association was represented by social disability (71%) and social disadvantage (63%). The gender, type of housing, necessity and prosthesis wearing were not associated with measures of quality of life related to oral health. It was observed a good correlation between the perception (r = 0.542, p <0.001), a moderate association between higher income (r = 0.28, p <0.01) and the scores of the OHIP.CONCLUSION: It was concluded that the elderly which reported good self-perception of oral health and good income have expressed the perception that oral health reflects a good impact on quality of life.

ABSTRACT This study was developed to show a professor’s perspective to comprehend his difficulties and challenges, within a different scenario and culture of teaching geriatric dentistry in a nursing home. It was a self-analysis theoretically supported by the Social Constructionism and the Interpretative Autoethnography perspective. Data were constructed by means of participant observation and interaction descriptions. They were analysed by means of a matrix of association. As a result, a culture of adaptation and negotiation was described. Teaching geriatrics is associated with a constant adaptation to technical difficulties. It needs a well-developed interpersonal and professional relation among professors, students, and elderly. It results in constant adjustments and negotiation with feelings and emotions. Teaching geriatrics, in this context, was perceived as a multi-emotional scenario, which enriches the health educational practices.
