Bater não educa ninguém!práticas educativas parentais coercitivas e suas repercussões no contexto escolar

Naiana Dapieve Patias; Aline Cardoso Siqueira; Ana Cristina Garcia Dias

The objective of this article is to reflect upon the effects of coercive education practices on the development of the child and the adolescent, seeking to understand their influence on behavior and learning within the school context. Based on the unsystematic analysis of studies on the theme, it was possible to understand that the coercive strategies that made use of physical force to educate are associated to negative results for the human development of the child and the adolescent, such as aggressive behavior and low self-esteem, constituting thereby a risk to their healthy development. Nevertheless, these practices are socially shared and regarded as natural by families, with other forms of educating often being unknown. With the school being regarded as an important space for the interaction of children, it has been called upon to join in this issue. Thus, forms are discussed of giving instruments to the professionals of education to help them identify cases where coercive strategies and physical violence are being used in the education of children, as well as to help them with preventive actions with students and with the community. In order to allow this purpose to be fulfilled, the bodies responsible for the defense of the rights of children, as well as the school psychologist, can act alongside the school, helping it in this process. The psychologist can work with parents to introduce them to forms of education that avoid the perspective of violence, thereby preventing future developmental damage and behavior that will hinder learning. Fostering reflections about this problem will allow the values of non-violence education to flourish among families, contributing to turn children into future healthy adults.

This is a qualitative study aimed at analyzing the perception of child protective agents and law professionals about the psychological care provided to children and adolescents by a Specialized Center of Reference in Social Assistance. Semi-structured interviews were conducted, and the results indicated that this Center has been a reference in providing services such as referrals and psychological assistance to victims of violence. The assistance provided by the Psychology professionals in the context of social assistance is considered very important for the understanding and support of children and adolescents in a situation of violence. However, the municipal public assistance offered does not always meet local demand, and, most of the time, it starts too late. Therefore, the results show need for more local governments investments to promote the implementation of services and to hire specialized professionals to assist children and adolescents in a situation of violence.

Studies with children and adolescents in residential care emphasize the environment and social relations as complex systems and show that there are negative labeling and stigma about this population. This chapter describes the investigative process and the results of an exploratory research that aimed to identify the social images assigned to children in care, their families, and residential care institutions. An open questionnaire was used, and the participants were asked to write up to five characteristics that they associated with children, families, and residential care institutions. The survey of words was subjected to a content analysis, and categories were generated from the collected data. Participants were 202 people, selected by convenience, aged from 16 to 69 years (M = 32.76,SD = 11.67); 55% had contact with children in institutional care, and 42.1% worked with children/adolescents in situations of vulnerability. Results indicated that social images of children and their families are predominantly negative, while the social images of residential care institutions are predominantly positive. Even with the improvement of the laws, these results reveal that macrosystem aspects interfere in the development process in the institutional care context, influencing the children and youth protection policy and making it difficult to guarantee the right to live in a family and community environment in Brazil.

Ensuring the Rights of Birthmothers to Place Their Children for Adoption

Aline Cardoso Siqueira; Daniele Dalla Porta; Marina Peripolli Antoniazzi

Some women resign motherhood, abandoning or putting their children up for legal and illegal adoption. Putting a child up for adoption, though being an action provided by law, is permeated by social judgments, preventing psychological counseling and legal acceptance of women guaranteed by law. Thus, guaranteeing the right of putting children up for adoption is fundamental, considering that when mothers do not have conditions to provide them, they might be put at risk. This chapter aims to provide a comprehensive overview on the phenomenon that is the placement of a child for adoption, based on the integration of three qualitative and exploratory studies that examined how placement has been managed from the perspective of health professionals, guardianship counselors, and birthmothers. Seven health professionals, seven guardianship counselors, and three birthmothers who had placed their newborn child for adoption responded to semi-structured interviews, which have been analyzed by content analysis. The analysis is based on the bioecological model. The results point the presence of idealized conceptions of motherhood and maternal love evident in the work of the health professionals of public hospitals and in society as a whole. The methodological challenges and the advances were discussed.
