The objective of this experiment was to assess the renal function of ten healthy male adult dogs submitted to therapeutic doses of amphotericin B, whose use has been limited due to its high nephrotoxic potential, as well as to evaluate the more sensitive and early method to diagnose kidney lesions. The renal function was evaluated through daily urinalysis, fractioned excretion of sodium and potassium, serum concentration of creatinine and blood urea nitrogen (BUN) and urinary activity of gamma-glutamyltransferase (GGT). It was concluded that amphotericin b provokes lesions in both proximal and distal tubules, inducing type I renal tubular acidosis and nephrogenic Diabetes insipidus in dogs. Renal function evaluation, preferably by serum creatinine, BUN and potassium dosage is recommended before each drug application. Urinalysis proved to diagnose kidney lesions in its earliest stage through a modification of the density parameters. Urinary GGT was not effective as an earliest diagnose kidney lesions caused by amphotericin B.

Calodium hepaticum has been reported as a parasite of the hepatic parenchyma of many mammal species, but it is not frequent in dogs. The present article aimed to describe two cases of hepatic capillariasis in dogs, diagnosed in a period of one month, in e Santa Maria city, Rio Grande do Sul state, Brazil . The first dog presented clinical sintomathology of cardiac insufficiency and Calodium hepaticum eggs were occasionally found by histopathological examination of the liver. The second animal presented icteric mucous membranes and ascites. The hemogram revealed non-regenerative anaemia and in the biochemistry serum were observed elevation of alkaline phosphatase, alanina aminotransferase and hypoalbuminemia. The cavitary liquid analysis was compatible with modified transudate. In the histopathological examination, numerous bioperculated eggs of Calodium hepaticum were observed aleatorily distributed in the hepatic parenchyma, with granulomatous and fibrous reaction adjacent to the eggs. The occurrence of two cases in a short period of time suggests that other dogs may be infected and requires a rodent population control.

ABSTRACT This study compares the efficacy of skin impression with acetate tape and the deep skin scraping test to find D. canis and S. scabiei in dogs. During six months, 134 samples were collected by both techniques from 115 dogs treated at the dermatology service of the Veterinary Hospital of the Federal University of Santa Maria (HVU-UFSM). Of these patients, 27 had demodicosis and 12 had scabies. The impression with acetate tape test (ITT) was shown to be significantly superior to the deep skin scraping test (DSST) in finding D. canis and S. scabiei mites (p = 0.007). Based on our results we could conclude that acetate tape impression is a reliable method for diagnosing and monitoring therapy of dermatopathies caused by mites and can be used to replace the traditional deep skin scraping method. In addition, since it is less traumatic for the dog, this method shows more acceptance by the owner. Keywords: dog, acetate tape, demodicosis, scabies RESUMO Este estudo compara a eficacia da impressao cutânea com fita de acetato ao raspado cutâneo profundo para a pesquisa de

A five year old male mongrel dog was presented for medical consultation with a history of arthralgia. Complete blood count revealed linfopenia and neutropenia, antinuclear antibody was positive at 1:1,256, and synovial fluid analysis showed inflammatory arthritis with lupus erythematosus cells. No significant proteinuria was detected on urinalysis, and microalbuminuria measurement was performed to determine glomerulonephritis in early stage. Based on clinical signs, synovial fluid analysis, antinuclear antibody test and complete blood count, the diagnosis was systemic lupus erythematosus. The measurement of microalbuminuria was useful to demonstrate the absence of glomerulonephritis, and the performance of complementary tests proved to be indispensable for diagnosis and prognosis. Glucocorticoid treatment led to complete remission.

Sugar is one of the most widely used products in the treatment of wounds in veterinary medicine. Its main advantage is the hygroscopic effect on tissues and the bacterial death by plasmolysis, making it a bactericidal agent due to the physical effect observed, without leading to bacterial resistance. The aim of this experiment was to compare cicatricial evolution of cutaneous wounds with the topical use of sugar either granulated or as gel. Sixteen canine wounds were treated: eight with granulated sugar (group A) and eight with sugar gel (group G). Treatment time, independent of the group, took at least seven days and a maximum of 14. Concerning applicability, gel sugar showed better adhesion to wounds and subcutaneous filling more effectively that granulated sugar. It is concluded that both granulated and gel sugar were effective in healing skin wounds, the gel being precocious in cicatricial retraction within the first seven days of treatment.

Master’s Dissertation Post-graduated Program in Veterinary Medicine Santa Maria Federal University Biomechanical test to determination the diameter of the polymethylmethacrylate bar in external skeletal fixator type Ia: in swine humerus. Author: Bernardo Schmitt Advisor: Maurício Veloso Brun Date and Place of Defense: Santa Maria, February 26, 2014. While seemingly inert appearance, bones are highly dynamic structures, which promote formation, resorption, repair and maintenance of homeostasis. Fractures in bones occur when the load applied to a specific bone region exceeds its resilience. The use of external skeletal fixator (ESF) is a method of fairly common internal stabilization, in which connector bars polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) are used without criterion in diameter. In these cases, it can break if it gets too thin or too heavy and uncomfortable when bulky. The aim of this study was to test biomechanical through axial compression and bending, considering different connector bar diameter PMMA correlated to bone diameter for use to type Ia ESF. For this, it was collected 24 swine humerus to make measurements of length, diameter, circumference and testing biomechanical. After the bars confected with 1.5 times the average diameter of the bone (group I), the same diameter bone (group II) and 0.5 times the diameter of the bone (group III). The results obtained, it was observed that the connector bars in group II were more resistant than the bones in the compression test. In the bending test, the bones resisted flexion strength when compared to group III. The group II was 4.3 times more resistant than Group III in the same mechanical test. The results allow a direction for making bars PMMA considering bone diameter as a reference.

A total of 154 samples of skin lesions were obtained from dogs with superficial pyoderma that were assisted by the Veterinary Dermatology Service at the University Veterinary Hospital (HVU), Universidade Federal de Santa Maria (UFSM), aiming to determine the antimicrobial susceptibility of Staphylococcus spp. isolates and evaluate the presence of multidrug resistance profile. After bacterial isolation and identification, the strains were tested for antimicrobial susceptibility, and the results showed lower percentages of resistance to the amoxicillin and clavulanic acid association (1.9%), cefadroxil (1.9%), cephalexin (1.9%) and vancomycin (0.6%). The highest percentages were towards amoxicillin (60.4%) and penicillin G (60.4%). The multidrug resistance was detected in 23.4% and the methicillin resistance in 5.8% of the samples. It may be concluded that the Staphylococcus spp. isolates present high susceptibility to key antimicrobials used in the treatment of superficial pyodermas in dogs at the HVU-UFSM, such as cephalexin and the amoxicillin and clavulanic acid association, confirming the preference for these drugs when treating dogs with this disorder. The susceptibility of the strains to fluoroquinolones, also recommended in the literature for the treatment of pyodermas, allows suggesting that such drugs should not be considered in the empirical selection. The identification of multidrug-resistant Staphylococcus spp. in the studied canine population justifies periodic and regional bacteriological tests of skin lesions in dogs with superficial pyoderma, possible therapeutic failures and also motivates wise use of antimicrobial therapy.

This paper describes the use of titanium mesh as an alternative for reconstruction of bone defect created by resection of aggressive squamous cell carcinoma of the nasal bridge in a dog. After chemotherapy with topic and systemic 5-fluorouracil associated with piroxicam for the tumor mass reduction, it was performed a surgical resection of the affected region, repair of bone defects with titanium mesh and subsequent closing of the wound with musculocutaneous single pedicle advancement flap. The main complication in the postoperative period was the formation of subcutaneous emphysema, which was controlled in three days with air drainage and application of compression bandages. The animal remained without signs of recurrence for eight months. In the tenth month postoperatively, the patient presented myiasis in local recurrence and the owner opted for euthanasia. In this case, it was possible to conclude that titanium mesh was a suitable material for the reconstruction of the nasal bridge, having as main complication the occurrence of subcutaneous emphysema.

Hemipelvectomy is the removal of part of the pelvis and is indicated for the surgical treatment of malignant tumors. This study presents the case of a canine patient with recurrent chondrosarcoma, submitted to hemipelvectomy with limb amputation. The report aims to highlight the importance of surgery in the treatment of radial bone chondrosarcoma, addressing a viable and unconventional alternative for patients suffering from tumors in the pelvis, which against the extension of the lesion may be misdiagnosed as intractable cancer. After the partial hemipelvectomy with amputation of the limb the animal satisfactory returned to ambulation without difficulty in supporting or alteration in balance.
