The objective of this experiment was to study the fern propagation from spores of Cyathea schanschin Mart and Dicksonia sellowiana (Presl.) Hook. The spores were decontaminated in calcium or sodium hypochlorite solutions. The in vitro experiments were performed with the media: MS modified, Jones or Knops solution modified. Tree-fern fibre, sphagnum moss, loam soil or brick peaces were, used for the in vivo experiments. The temperature was mantained at 25 ± 1°C and 16 hours of photoperiod for both treatments (In vivo and in vitro cultures). Besides the high percentage of contamination during the germination process, in vitro and in vivo, the best results were obtained with decontamination made in a 2% sodium hypochlorite solution. The spores germination occurred after a period of 4 to 8 weeks and the prothalli were formed 30 to 40 days latter. There was a high percentage of germination and prothalli formation in Jones and Knop media, and tree-fern fibre and sphagnum moss substrates.

Flordaprince (Fla. 5-2) is a new early red skin yellow fleshed peach cultivar selected at the Florida Agricultural Experiment Station for its adaptation to the mild winter of central Florida, U.S.A. It was introduced in 1979 in the State of Sao Paulo, Brazil, where its behavior in the local climatic conditions has been observed. The low chilling requirement (about 150 hours below 7.2 oC), high tree vigor and productiveness, beautiful appearance and early ripening of fruits are characteristics that justify its inclusion in the commercial plots in Sao Paulo and in the peach breeding program of the Instituto Agronomico.

Experiments on apple micropropagation were carried out in the laboratories of the Instituto Agronomico, Campinas, Brazil. The main hormonal requirements of shoots in the different development phases - growing, proliferation, root induction and effective root and shoot development - were studied in five apple cultivars: Rainha, Gala and the selections IAC 1381-22, IAC 3881-8 and IAC 4881-11. The best technique for apple micropropagation in our conditions was found to consist of: a) growth of meristems in Murashige and Skoog saline solution culture medium supplemented with 1.0mg/liter thiamin HCl, 0.25mg/liter nicotinic acid, 100mg/liter myo-inositol, 6.5g/liter agar, 30g/liter sucrose and 7.5µM BAP (6-benzylaminopurine); b) transfer to dark room for 5 days in a root induction medium containing the same mineral and organic constituents of the first solution, only changing BAP for 2.0µM IBA (indole-3-butiric acid); and c) transfer to a root growth medium basically equal to the other except that no phytohormones was added. The rooted plantlets were potted in vermiculite, watered with a dilute mineral solution and kept in a growth chamber under high moisture for 15 days; finally they were potted in a soil mixture and transferred to a greenhouse.
