This study aimed at analyzing the costs of material used in the occlusive dressings of burn patients. The subjects of the study were patients over the age of 18 years who were admitted to the Burns Unit of the Ribeirão Preto Medical School Clinical Hospital, University of São Paulo-Brazil, from 15 January to 11 September 1998. Data were collected concerning the costs and duration of bathing and dressing of these patients. We concluded that there was a positive relation between the real costs of the materials used and the percentage of the body surface burned. In addition, there was a positive correlation between the number of staff involved in care and the size of the burns. There was no significant difference between the cost of materials used in dressings for burns of different depths.

Using Life Table Method the present study estimated the survival of patients gone under hemodialysis, according to age group, from 1997 to 2000, in the Ribeirão Preto County. Based in probability of survival it was also estimated the expenses referred to the sessions of hemodialysis for patients that are beginning treatment. Nearly 60% of patients followed were alive after four years of study, show high survival. The results of this study show that the high expenditure with hemodialysis refers to the increase of survival of patients and not specifically the increase of demand of the therapy.

Ivone Kamada; Semiramis Melani Melo Rocha; Claudia Benedita dos Santos Barbeira

This study aimed at obtaining information on the development of data records in Neonatal Intensive Care Units in Brazil; comparing the number of beds in Neonatal Intensive Care Units with that in Intensive Care Units in general and assessing their distribution in different Brazilian states. There has been an increase in the number of beds and authorizations for hospitalizations in intensive care units. The percentages indicating the total number of beds for intensive care and neonatal intensive care vary from one state to another with 17% in São Paulo, 25% in Rio Grande do Sul and 29.5% in Paraná. São Paulo state presents the highest number of beds, followed by Rio Grande do Sul.This study aimed at obtaining information on the development of data records in Neonatal Intensive Care Units in Brazil; comparing the number of beds in Neonatal Intensive Care Units with that in Intensive Care Units in general and assessing their distribution in different Brazilian states. The aims of this article are to describe the implementation of a nurse-monitored protocol and the adherence to cardiac therapeutic regimen of 17 male patients after coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) surgery. The protocol was developed to cover two recovery phases of the patients: during the hospitalization after CABG surgery and 6 months following hospital discharge. Follow-up included individual patient counseling through personal contacts and telephone calls. Adherence to therapeutic regimen (dietary counseling, walking program, body weight control, smoking cessation and pharmacological therapy) was self-reported. The results showed that patients reported high percentages of adherence to walking program (88.2%), smoking cessation (76.5%), dietary counseling (70.6%), and drug orientation (64.7%). However, at follow-up, there was no statistically significant difference between the group that reported adherence to medical regimen and the group that reported no adherence in use of lipid-lowering drugs (P=0.68), decrease of body mass index (P=0.28), and HDL-cholesterol level (P=0.07).
