Purpose This study aims to expose the main knowledge management (KM) practices applied in BRIC (Brazil, Russia, India and China) industries using scientific literature published in the Scopus database from 2001 to 2010. Design/methodology/approach A search was performed in papers selected from the Scopus database, which houses the KM practices of industries in BRIC countries. Findings The results show that Brazil, Russia and India have an easier way of converting tacit knowledge into explicit knowledge compared to China, where informal relationships of trust and friendship play a special role within organizations, as well as where the political structure (communism) is an intervening factor. Brazil, Russia and India practice similar KM mechanisms such as the use of technology, process standardization and electronic data management. They also model the positive experiences of western companies. In China, interpersonal relationships shape the tacit and explicit features of organizations. Research limitations/implications The methodological filter could potentially limit the volume of responses, as not every case study can demonstrate the usual practices of KM. Empirical studies are able to capture the nuances and even provide a holistic picture of these practices. Practical Implications The results have practical implication, in particular. They are expected to help managers and workers to better comprehend KM practices in BRIC countries or even suggest new KM practices in the business. Originality/value The main discussion of this paper brings together a large range of KM practices applied in BRIC, addressing similarities and differences between KM deployments.

Comparison of performance of researchers recipients of CNPq productivity grants in the field of Brazilian production engineering

Claudia Tania Picinin; Luiz Alberto Pilatti; João Luiz Kovaleski; Alexandre Reis Graeml; Bruno Pedroso

This paper analyses the academic production of researchers that were called “productivity grants” awarded by CNPq, the Brazilian research funding agency, in the field of production engineering in the period 2007–2009. Was extracted the data resumes of 101 Brazilian researchers in the Lattes Platform. In relation to the scientific production, productivity grant researchers presented superior performance than the other professors working in graduate programs in the production engineering area. There is a tendency towards the increase in the mean of supervisions to master students starting from the highest aggregate level of productivity grants going down to the beginner levels. In comparison with the other permanent professors in graduate programs, who do not hold productivity grants, the tutorial mean for both masters and doctorate students of the grant researchers’ is exactly the same as group 2PQ. PQ researchers usually present high scientific production ad low technical production, while DT researchers present low scientific production and high technical production. There seems to be logical coherence regarding the distribution of grants, at least with respect to the easily measurable progression criteria. However, there is some evidence that for criteria that are harder to assess, there may be some discrepancies.

This study aimed at developing and validating the Brazilian version of Hackman and Oldhams Job Diagnostic Survey. The process of translation and cultural adaptation of this instrument followed the procedure adopted by the World Health Organization Quality of Life assessment instrument - WHOQOL. Significant values of Cronbachs alpha were found for all dimensions evaluated. Regarding the criteria validity, significant correlations were found between all dimensions. As for the concurrent validity, it was inferred that the correlation between the average of the dimensions of the Job Diagnostic Survey and the total score of the assessment instrument of the Waltons Quality of work Life model was significant. The test-retest reliability showed that there was no significant variation in the dimensions, and that the correlation coefficient between both applications was significant in all dimensions evaluated. The Brazilian version of the Hackman and Oldhams Job Diagnostic Survey was validated and presented good psychometric properties and kept the instrument original features.

Bruno Pedroso; Claudia Tania Picinin; José Roberto Herrera Cantorani; Gustavo Luis Gutierrez

Bibliometric analysis for characterization of oil production in Brazilian territory

Rafael Henrique Mainardes Ferreira; Claudia Tania Picinin

The theme related to the oil production in the Brazilian territory is not limited to the extraction means, distribution and use of this product, and involves political, cultural and environmental axes. The paradigm shift in relation to the market aspects of petroleum is proving to be an issue for new academic discussions and future possibilities. This research aims to analyze the framework of the oil production in Brazil, based on the main contributions of this theme to the academic environment in the national and international spheres. The profiling of oil production in Brazil was conducted by bibliometric analysis, which is a fundamental tool to identify ideas and concepts inserted in a given context. This tool through a query of data from two databases was applied, the national platform Scielo Brazil, and the international platform Science Direct. As a result of the research, it was possible to verify the centralization of the theme in some research axes, verifying new approaches to the oil context at different scales of research.

The Brazilian Recent Infrastructure Policies

Claudia Tania Picinin; Caroline Lievore; Renata Vidart Klafke; Luiz Alberto Pilatti

Investments in infrastructure provide an increase in the market value of the poor populations assets when their residence is served by sewage, water and telephone networks. They also allow each region to specialise in the economic activities for which they have the greatest vocation (agriculture, services, etc.), creating productivity gains and quality for the economy. In this sense, this short paper aims, through bibliographic research on SCOPUS database and on federal agencies websites, to highlight the main modes of transportation in Brazil and evaluate the amount of investment done in infrastructure in recent years in Brazil.

Brazilian industrialisation: the influence of technological levels on the gross domestic product and Human Development Index

Renata Vidart Klafke; Claudia Tania Picinin; Augusta Pelinski Raiher; Luiz Alberto Pilatti

This study aims to investigate which technological levels of industry contributed most to the formation and development of the gross domestic product (GDP) and the Human Development Index (HDI) in Brazil from 2000 to 2010. The HDI and the GDP were the dependent variables selected for the study. The independent variables were selected from the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) base: they included employees, salaries and manufacturing establishments from 23 industries that were separated into technological levels according to the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD). Multiple regressions were used to indicate the relationship of dependency and explanatory power between dependent and explanatory variables. The results showed that the industries with mid-low and low technological levels have greater impact on the formation of GDP and HDI in Brazil. These two technological levels were primarily developed with the arrival of multinationals in the 1990s and 2000s, as found in the theory background. An empirical research spanning a longer time period and based on other sources would possibly give more strength to the econometric study. This study has implications for academicians and entrepreneurs willing to understand the Brazilian market and industry history.

REFLECTIONS ON CO-AUTHORING IN BRAZILIAN ARTICLES

Renata Vidart Klafke; Claudia Tania Picinin; Jessyca Moraes

This short paper aims to consider and stimulate discussions about the professors evaluation model in the Brazilian universities. Brazilian educational institutions are increasingly requiring authorship (or co-authorship) of research publications for favourable career advancement decisions. The publication interest began when the Improvement of Higher Education Personnel (CAPES) started to push scholars for more publications. Although there are some mishaps in this process, as presented in the study, the most important things is that intellectual work of scientific production should follow an essentially artisanal logic and ethics, instead of the Taylorist production for better results.

Renata Vidart Klafke; Claudia Tania Picinin; Alexandre Roberto Lages; Luiz Alberto Pilatti

Abstract This paper investigates which technological levels of industry contributed most to the formation and development of the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and the Human Development Index (HDI) in China from 2000 to 2010. These indexes were the dependent variables. The independent variables were selected from the United Nations Industrial Development Organization database, and encompass employees and manufacturing establishments from 23 industries bracketed into technological levels intensity. Ordinary least squares regressions were run to indicate the relationship of dependency and explanatory power between variables. The results showed that mid-low technology level industries have greater impact on the China’s GDP; however, no technology level industry really influences the HDI.
