Phonemic and semantic verbal fluency tasks: normative data for elderly Brazilians

Este estudo buscou investigar a influencia de caracteristicas sociodemograficas no desempenho de idosos em duas tarefas de fluencia verbal, alem de fornecer dados normativos de referencia nessas tarefas, conforme niveis de educacao, para a populacao brasileira de idosos saudaveis​​. A amostra inicial incluiu 521 idosos com idade a partir 60 anos, participantes do Programa Estrategia Saude na Familia. Foram excluidos os participantes que tinham pontuacoes sugestivas de declinio cognitivo no Mini Exame do Estado Mental, de sintomas depressivos na Escala de Depressao Geriatrica e com autorrelato de doencas neurologicas ou de disturbios psiquiatricos. A amostra final foi composta por 218 participantes que responderam a tarefa de fluencia verbal fonemica (letras F, A e S) e 265 que responderam a tarefa semântica (animais). O desempenho em ambas as tarefas foi associado a idade e aos anos de ensino formal, mas nao ao sexo. Ainda, a variavel escolaridade mostrou ter um impacto maior no desempenho de fluencia verbal do que a idade em ambas as modalidades de evocacao. Os resultados desse estudo sugerem a importância de oferecer dados normativos de idosos brasileiros, adequados a idade e a escolaridade, em tarefas de fluencia verbal.

Maus-tratos contra idosos em Porto Alegre, Rio Grande do Sul: um estudo documental

This study aimed to identify the prevalence of elder abuse in the city of Porto Alegre, RS, Brazil, causes of abuse, and the profile of the victim and the aggressor. A retrospective documentary study was carried out based on police reports filed in April and May 2011 to the Department of Senior Services of Porto Alegre. Of the 224 police reports evaluated, 175 were of elder abuse or mistreatment. Psychological abuse was the most frequently identified type of abuse, followed by material/financial abuse. Most of the victims were senior females with low level of education, and the majority of aggressors were male family members. The results show high rates of elder abuse in the city of Porto Alegre.

Neuropsychological assessment of older adults with virtual reality: Association of age, schooling, and general cognitive status

The development of neuropsychological assessment methods using virtual reality (VR) is a valid and promising option for the detection of cognitive impairment in the older people, focusing on activities composed of tasks of multiple demands. This study verified the association of age, schooling, and general cognitive status on the performance of neurologically healthy older adults in ECO-VR, a VR task of multiple demands for neuropsychological assessment. A total of 111 older adults answered a sociodemographic questionnaire, the Mini Mental State Examination, the Vocabulary subtest of the Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Adults (third edition), and the ECO-VR. Correlation analyses, multiple linear regression, and comparisons between groups (effects by age and schooling groups) were used to evaluate the results. The ECO-VR total score was significantly associated with age, years of education, MMSE, and Vocabulary subtest. The linear regression models identified that age was the main predictor for total score and rule breaking of ECO-VR. According to the univariate analysis, it was identified the main effect of age group and schooling group in the total ECO-VR score, but there was no interaction effect. The results are discussed in order to understand the role of sociodemographic characteristics in the performance of older adults in a VR task of multiple demands. It was also verified the possibility use of VR for neuropsychological assessment of older adults.

Personality factors in the elderly: The relationship between cognitive functioning and depressive symptoms

Avaliação Psicológica, 2017, 16(2), 117-195 ABSTRACT Personality factors have been highlighted as possible predictors for cognitive performance and depressive symptomatology in the elderly. The current study aims to investigate the relationship between the five principal personality factors, depressive symptomatology and cognitive performance of elderly during attention, memory and executive function tasks. Additionally, there was the attempt to investigate the predictor role played by depression symptoms and cognitive functioning in personality factors. The convenience sampling method was used and 72 elderly persons, aged between 60 and 85 years, were evaluated. They answered questions about sociodemographic conditions, personality factors (NEO-FFI-R), depressive symptomatology (GDS-15) and underwent an evaluation of their cognitive functions. Results showed a positive to moderate relationship between Neuroticism and depressive symptomatology, as well as a negative to moderate relationship between Openness to experience and depressive symptomatology. Depressive symptoms emerge as the strongest predictor correlated to the highest Neuroticism indices and the lowest of Extroversion, Openness to experience, and Conscientiousness. Non-perseverative errors on the WCST were strongly associated, with the higher scores on Neuroticism and lower in Extraversion in the sample. The investigation points towards the existence of a relationship among personality, depressive symptomatology, and cognitive functioning factors in the elderly, however, further studies are suggested.

Transgressão da lei como uma busca de limites

A transgressao das leis pelo meio da violencia tem sido alvo de estudos e preocupacoes devido a grande proporcao que vem tomando dentro da sociedade. Atos de violencia contra as pessoas tornam-se cada vez mais frequentes na sociedade contemporânea. Diante da imprevisibilidade das acoes violentas, e crescente o sentimento de impotencia diante delas por parte da populacao. Isso acaba gerando, no imaginario individual e coletivo, a representacao da violencia como sendo uma forca incontrolavel. Varios fatores nos possibilitam supor o que impulsiona esses atos infracionais, entre estes estao a desagregacao familiar e o ambiente cultural. A funcao do pai e de apresentar a Lei para o filho, o que vai direciona-lo para outros interesses na cultura. Sendo assim, com o presente artigo, pretende-se obter uma melhor compreensao, por meio da Psicanalise, acerca da violencia, suas expressoes e repercussoes nos relacionamentos sociais. O presente estudo, de natureza teorica, parte de uma pesquisa bibliografica. A partir da revisao bibliografica realizada e com o aumento dos atos de violencia na sociedade moderna, percebe-se um fracasso da lei, da autoridade simbolica da funcao paterna. A violencia tem sido percebida como uma desestabilizacao do equilibrio social da civilizacao, sendo permeada devido a falta de leis. Com isso, entende-se que a transgressao da Lei pode ser uma busca de limites, uma procura por um Pai castrador que possa interditar/barrar esses instinto.

Third-agers on the Internet: Impacts on Word-of-Mouth and Online Purchase Intentions☆

Abstract Scientific development and technological advances have allowed for a considerable increase in human longevity. Elderly people, or “third-agers”, have come to make up an increasing percentage of the population in both developed countries and developing ones like Brazil. A major challenge for the elderly in this context is their adaptation to the demands of the modern world, especially in relation to Internet use. Nowadays these people have started to show a greater interest in new technologies. According to a study conducted in Brazil (CGI, 2009), usage frequency among older consumers who access the Internet is as follows: 47% daily, 29% at least once a week, 17% at least once a month and 7% less than once a month. These data confirm the promising market represented by elderly people. Given the change in population structure, combined with the considerable technological development resulting from the growth of Internet use in day-to-day life, it is important to understand Internet usage among elderly consumers. To analyze this, it is important that future studies concern themselves with the purpose of use, frequency of access and the future impacts that the Internet may have upon such customers. This theoretical article is organized with such questions in mind. Based on the literature, we have constructed a model to be tested in a subsequent study to help identify the relationships between the several variables surrounding this consumer behavior and the use of the Internet.

As emoções dos consumidores da terceira idade no processo de escolha de destinos de viagens

Emotions have great importance in purchasing decisions, however, only recently, researchers started to study them by qualitative approaches. In this context, this study sought to examine them in a still unexplored segment: elderly consumers. For this purpose, this research concentrated in a service for which they have shown a lot of interest – tourism – in order to analyze the emotions present in the choice of travel destinations and their influence on future purchasing decisions. That was done with the use of in-depth interviews aided by the Photo Elicitation Technique (PET). It was then observed that emotions affect the choice for a particular travel destination because the sensations experienced during previous trips are stored in memory and have a strong influence on future decision-making processes. This work also brings interesting contributions for future research because it investigated the occurrence of emotions in 3 separate stages of the consumption process – before, during and after the trip – and not only as just one element in this decision, as normally occurs in most researches about emotions. By demonstrating that this was a favorable decision to better understand the emotions throughout the entire purchase decision process, new paths are opened for further research with different methodological approaches.
