The scope of this study is to identify contributions and limits of teaching-service integration between the School of Medicine of Marilia and the Municipal Health Department of Marilia for academia, for the health teams and for the community. The study involved cross-sectional research using a quantitative approach. A questionnaire with 20 affirmations structured around a Likert scale was applied to students, professors and collaborating professors with a total of 183 participants. A trend for a positive evaluation of teaching-service integration for professional education was revealed. As regards contributions of teaching-service integration to the community, the positive evaluation was close to 50%. The items referring to contributions to the health teams were the ones that had the highest number of negative responses. Data indicate that it is necessary to move forward such that teaching and service are considered interdependent processes with possibilities of joint reflections.

In this study, the authors describe the learning/teaching experience of the 2nd year of the Faculdade de Medicina de Marília Nursing Course, which interdisciplinary curriculum has been implemented according to the PBL methodology since 1998. This curriculum seeks to articulate content, theory/practice and learning/service, in a continuous reconstruction process, with feedback through evaluation, which is considered to be an advance, yet which also contains some challenges. Introduction: The importance of breastfeeding is undisputed. It provides benefits to infants, nursing mothers, families, and society as a whole. The World Health Organization encourages a diet of exclusive breastfeeding until six months of age; however, this routine may be unfeasible for many reasons, one of which is the mother’s use of medication. Objective: To characterize medications used by nursing mothers in terms of risk categories, place of care and medical professionals responsible for the prescription, and the extent of medical advice received by the mothers. Methods: This is a retrospective, quantitative, and cross-sectional study. The data were collected from Brazil’s Family Health Strategies (ESF) program and included information on 161 nursing mothers from 2012 and 2013 and their use of medications while breastfeeding. The data were considered in absolute and relative frequencies and compared to the secondary variables in the study in order to determine whether any associations existed. The chisquare test was applied as part of the analysis. Results: Of the nursing mothers interviewed, 55.9% reported taking medication. The most frequent groups of medications were those affecting the genito-urinary system and sex hormones, endocrine system, followed by systemic and cardiovascular medications. In the ESF program, general practitioners were the medical professionals who most frequently prescribed medication to these women, followed by gynecologists. Of the women who received prescriptions, 64.4% received some type of medical advice. The statistical analysis revealed a positive correlation between risk category and medical specialty (p=0.03), as well as between risk category and place of care (p=0.001). Conclusion: The most frequently used drug class was that of contraceptives. All medication classified as contraindicated was found to have been prescribed as part of primary care by general practitioners. Thus, these results reflect the need for more qualified professionals throughout Brazil’s public health care network.

This qualitative research aims to identify advances and challenges of teaching-service integration in nursing and medical education between the Marilia Medical School and Marilia Municipal Health Secretary. Data were collected from accounts given by teachers, students and health professionals. The analysis was based on the hermeneutic-dialectic method. The results showed that teaching-service integration allows early integration of the student in the workplace, guides the construction of knowledge in professional practice, supports the exchange of information and increases the quantity and quality of health actions aimed at the community. The identified challenges were a lack of recognition of the students role by health team members, a lack of management support for the development of Family Health Strategy principles and a lack of definition of academia and service roles in partnership contracts. Suggestions for the improvement of the integration included expanding the insertion of the collaborating teacher in academic activities, improving the management of Primary Health Care and reviewing the partnership agreement. These advances are needed to enhance co-responsibility in the process of in-service learning.
