This qualitative study analyzed, from the teachers perspective, if the principle of comprehensiveness is included in child healthcare teaching in nursing education. The participants were 16 teachers involved in teaching child healthcare in eight undergraduate nursing programs. Data collection was performed through interviews that were submitted to thematic content analysis. The theory in teaching incorporates comprehensive care, as it is based on childrens epidemiological profile, child healthcare policies and programs, and included interventions for the promotion/prevention/rehabilitation in primary health care, hospitals, daycare centers and preschools. The comprehensive conception of health-disease process allows for understanding the child within his/her family and community. However, a contradiction exists between what is proposed and what is practiced, because the teaching is fragmented, without any integration among disciplines, with theory dissociated from practice, and isolated practical teaching that compromises the incorporation of the principle of comprehensiveness in child healthcare teaching. This qualitative study analyzed, from the teacher’s perspective, if the principle of comprehensiveness is included in child healthcare teaching in nursing ed...

This is a description of the Integrated Management of Childhood Illness (IMCI) strategy in the professional practice of nurses graduated from the School of Nursing of University of São Paulo (EE-USP). This is a case study of qualitative approach. The data were collected through focus groups and analyzed using thematic content analysis. IMCI strategy was considered an important tool in child health care, but only the assessment module was apart of professional practice. Difficulties in the use of the IMCI were: the strategy was not implanted at health services, it was unknown by co-workers and institutional obstacles. In spite of the limited and non-systematic use of IMCI, it has allowed nurses to provide integrated and comprehensive attention to the child, which justifies its teaching on undergraduate courses. Maintenance of the educational video, expansion of the practice, integration of courses and optimization of content and workload were suggested for improving the teaching of IMCI at the undergraduate level.

This study aimed to describe ways of using play by the nursing staff on palliative care of children with cancer and analyze the facilitators and barriers of the use of playing on this type of care. Qualitative, descriptive research developed on November 2012 with 11 health professionals, in a public hospital of the state of Rio de Janeiro. Semi-structured interviews and thematic analysis of the information were conducted. The use of playing before procedures was highlighted as a facilitator on palliative care. The childs physical condition, ones restriction, resistance of some professionals and the lack of time for developing this activity, made the use of play harder. We concluded that playing enables the child with cancer, in palliative care, a humanized assistance, being fundamental to integrate it on the care for these children.

OBJECTIVE to describe the perception of hospitalized children of school age, on nursing care and understand what are, from their perspective, the best ways to address it to when performing such care. METHOD qualitative, descriptive, exploratory research, with concepts of Vygotsky used as theoretical framework. The data collection occurred through interviews mediated by drawings and was performed with ten school children, with the interview later transcribed and submitted to a thematic analysis. RESULTS showed the importance of playing during hospitalization, of a friendly and caring approach and providing explanations regarding the performed procedures. CONCLUSION nursing professionals need to consider how the children would like to receive the care being provided, so that their singularities are respected, characterizing nursing actions according to a perspective of the whole human being.

Objective: to know the doubts of the relatives of children with special health care needs regarding home care related to technological devices; and to analyze the use of the conversation circle as a strategy of health education in the preparation for the hospital discharge of the relatives of children with technological devices. Method: descriptive and exploratory research, with a qualitative approach, performed in the pediatric hospitalization sector of a federal hospital in Rio de Janeiro between May and June 2014. Six family members participated in semi-structured interviews and conversation circles. The data were submitted to thematic analysis. Results: the relatives highlighted doubts in the learning and adaptation to the technology during the transition from the hospital to the home environment, and in possible emergency situations after the hospital discharge. These doubts were mainly about procedural care with tracheostomy and gastrostomy. However, the strategy of the conversation circle with the use of a doll with technological devices coupled was well-accepted by the relatives, as it favored the dialogue and the exchange of knowledge and experiences among the participants, as well as promoting safety in care. Conclusion: the conversation circle is a strategy of health education that can be used by Nursing in the preparation of the hospital discharge of children with special health care needs, who are dependent on technology. However, this preparation must happen procedurally during the hospitalization
