Methods for reducing or eliminating longitudinal spatial hole burning in antireflection-coated, index-coupled distributed feedback (DFB) lasers are discussed. It is shown that elimination of spatial hole burning in DFB lasers can be achieved by the introduction of well-chosen variations of coupling strength and/or internal absorption in the longitudinal direction. It is shown that a theoretical laser structure with uniform power can always be obtained by choosing two arbitrary functions. The authors describe some of the more basic solutions with uniform power. Practical approximations of these structures, their numerical modeling, and some methods to fabricate them are presented. >

Describes the analysis, fabrication, and characterization of chirped grating tunable distributed-feedback (CGT DFB) semiconductor lasers. Both theoretical and experimental results show that the wavelength tunability of DFB lasers can be enhanced by introducing a pitch-chirped grating structure. The tuning mechanism is also theoretically demonstrated. The proposed CGT DFB laser will be useful in optical systems using wavelength division multiplexed (WDM) networks and other applications, due to its broader continuous tunability and very easy fabrication.

Dynamic birefringence of the linear optical amplifier (LOA) is theoretically and experimentally investigated. Significant nonlinear variations of the state of polarization with the input power and bias current of the LOA have been found. Based on this nonlinear change of the state of polarization, an all-optical 2R regenerator is demonstrated. Under static operation, an extinction ratio (ER) improvement of 15 dB has been obtained for an input ER of 5 dB. With a degraded input signal, a receiver sensitivity improvement of over 3 dB at a bit-error rate (BER) of 10/sup -9/ has been found for 2.5 Gb/s. For 10 Gb/s, zero power penalty is observed. Significant improvements of ER for both 2.5 and 10 Gb/s are obtained.

This chapter describes how laser diodes for optical communication, with their complex structure and physical interactions can be simulated. These lasers are usually of such a nature that variations in the lateral and transverse direction, as well as the electronic transport problem can be treated in a most simplified way, while longitudinal and spectral variations need to be taken into account in a detailed way.

We discuss properties and applications of heterogeneously integrated microdisk lasers coupled to an asymmetrically reflecting bus waveguide. Specific properties of interest for optical interconnect are unidirectionality and sensitivity to external feedback. We also discuss the application of such lasers for low power all-optical signal regeneration.

We demonstrate a 400times150 mum2 silicon-on-insulator 4times4 arrayed waveguide grating with 3.5 dB insertion loss, fabricated with CMOS technology. The device was pigtailed and used as a wavelength router in a 10 Gb/s reconfigurable optical backplane interconnect

All-optical 2R regeneration has been demonstrated at 2.5 Gb/s on a novel integrated SOA-based 2R regenerator. Simultaneous improvement of the extinction ratio and receiver sensitivity has been demonstrated for signals subject to different degrading mechanisms.
