Abstract Essential oils obtained by hydrodistillation from fruits of Seseli resinosum Freyn et Sint. and Seseli tortuosum L. were analyzed by GC and GC/MS. Twenty-two compounds were characterized, representing 100.0% of the oil of S. resinosum, while 27 compounds were found, representing 98.3% of the oil of S. tortuosum. The main constituents were found to be β-pinene (37.5%), 4α-hydroxygermacra-1(10)-5-diene (21.7%), α-pinene (13.7%) for S. resinosum and (E)-sesquilavandulol (37.0%), sabinene (19.7%), α-pinene (13.5%), β-phellandrene (7.8%) for S. tortuosum.

The antioxidant properties and phenolic composition of 27 Sideritis species were studied. Plant samples were extracted with petroleum ether using a Soxhlet apparatus. The defatted plant materials were extracted with 70% methanol. Antioxidant activities of the extracts were measured using Fe+2 induced linoleic acid peroxidation, as indicated by thiobarbituric acid reactive substance (TBARS) production. Free radical scavenging activities were determined based on 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl radical (DPPH). Results were compared with standard BHT. Total phenol concentration of the extracts was estimated with Folin-Ciocalteu reagent using gallic acid as standard, and phenolic components were quantified by HPLC-DAD.

The hydrodistilled essential oils from dried fruits of Zosima absinthifolia and Ferula elaeochytris were analysed by GC – MS. Sixteen components, representing 95.8% of the oil in Zosima absinthifolia, and 43 components, making up 76.7% of the oil of Ferula elaeochytris, were characterized. The major components were octyl acetate (38.4%) and octyl hexanoate (31.9%) in the former oil; and nonane (27.1%), α-pinene (12.7%) and germacrene B (10.3%) in the latter. Copyright

The water-distilled essential oils from crushed dry fruits of Prangos heyniae, a recently described endemic in Turkey, collected from two localities, were analysed by GC–MS. Sixty-one and 79 components representing 92.2% and 89.8% of the oils were characterized with β-bisabolenal (53.3% and 18.0%), β-bisabolenol (14.6% and 2.3%) and β-bisabolene (12.1% and 10.1%) as main constituents. Germacrene D (13.5%) and germacrene B (9.4%) were also main components in one of the samples. Copyright
