Poverty is generally based on monetary unidimensional of the conceptualization and measurement, restricting the analysis to poverty lines. There is, then, the multidimensional paradigm of the Capabilities Approach that extends the concept of poverty. It is built into the centrality of the autonomy and freedom of the individual in the exercise of their capabilities and functionings as elements of defi nition of poverty. However, in its practical perspective, the Capabilities approach is located generally in the identifi cation of specifi c health issues, housing and living standards related to poverty. So, identifi es the need to incorporate psychosocial dimensions that contribute to expansion of the critic understanding of this phenomenon and cover subjective, negative and positive aspects with regard to coping strategies developed by the poor. Children’s Subjective Well-Being in Disadvantaged Situations

Carme Montserrat; Ferran Casas; James Ferreira Moura

This study explores the differences in subjective well-being (SWB) between young adolescents living in disadvantaged situations and the general population of the same age, using data from a large representative sample (N = 5,381) of Spanish first year secondary students (mean age 12.08). Self-administered questionnaires were used at (randomly selected) schools to measure the Domains Satisfaction General Index (DSGI), calculated using the arithmetic mean of 8 indices for life domains. We also calculated different dimensions of poverty (education, satisfaction with home, subjective poverty and material conditions) from a multidimensional perspective using the fuzzy method. All of the analysed dimensions are negative predictors for the DSGI and a MANOVA reveals significant differences between the means of those children who consider themselves poorer and those of children who perceive themselves wealthier than others, for all of the dimensions studied. The discussion on which contextual factors influence subjective well-being and how this varies between sub-groups of children has important implications for policy, research and practice.

Elívia Camurça Cidade; James Ferreira Moura; Bárbara Barbosa Nepomuceno; Verônica Morais Ximenes; Jorge Castellá Sarriera

ABSTRACT The aim of this study was to analyze the consequences of poverty on expressions of fatalism, hope, and sense of community of two Brazilian States: Ceará and Rio Grande do Sul. Seven-hundred and thirty-one people, divided in four groups (extreme poverty, poverty, median income, and adequate income) answered a questionnaire. The variables sense of community and hope were found to be predictors of fatalism. Individuals in situations of poverty and extreme poverty showed high indices of fatalism, pessimism, divinity control, and luck, and low indices of hope and sense of community. Individuals with adequate income have low levels of fatalism, pessimism, and divinity control. It is concluded that poverty has consequences on the life of those who experience it, and that attitudes of pessimism, hopelessness, and belief in luck as well as the weakening of community networks, articulate and support the maintenance of the status quo.

James Ferreira Moura; Verônica Morais Ximenes

Poverty is addressed as oppression practice, developing depreciative identitary constitutions of the individual. This article examines the social roles of stigmatized social identity of poor. The research was performed with 4 people in street situation linked to Provisional Shelter of the Municipal Prefecture of Fortaleza. The used instruments were participant observation and narrative interview, having thematic analysis as procedure. It was identified the social roles of conformed, of believer in God as responsible for everything, of martyr, of cause of social malaise and of guilty for their situation. It is conceived that these social roles permeate social relations and identity, weakening and depreciating the potentialities of the poor individual. It is important for practitioners of Psychology to the understanding of these roles to draw up possible interventions focused on confronting of this situation of poverty.

Drugs and Poverty: Interfaces of Oppression in the Capitalist World

Verônica Morais Ximenes; Fernando Santana de Paiva; James Ferreira Moura; Pedro Henrique Antunes da Costa

The topic of drugs and poverty is part of a discussion that is the reality of Brazil and other countries. These two issues have together had an impact on processes of oppression in people’s lives. This chapter aims to discuss the impact and functions of drug use among populations living in poverty. We discuss some misconceptions that occur when linking the structural responsibilities of the capitalist system only to people who experience the naturalization of poverty, blame for their situation, and criminalization of the use of drugs. Discrimination practices develop as a result of stigmatization of social classes and drug use issues, creating humiliation, feelings of shame, and fatalistic behavior. Actions of denaturalization and decriminalization are presented, using a contextualized view of social problems. An analysis of the implications of such practices in the lives of people who go through contexts of poverty and drug use is also presented.

ABSTRACT This article presents the Community Psychology training concept created at the Community Psychology Nucleus (NUCOM), Federal University of Ceará (Brazil); mainly composed of university extension processes and their theoretical–methodological bases. Thus, university extension/cooperation emerges as a space to build new knowledge based on a cooperative perspective opposed to traditional anti-dialogical and hegemonic mechanisms. By evidencing the unabridged training of NUCOM’s graduate students, we seek to provide elements that will enable the comprehension of the learning concept present in daily relations constructed in extension activities. We also plan to socialize a way of thinking Community Psychology performance, whose reference is the people, with their needs and potentials, emphasizing them as the true subjects of psychological practice.
