A evidencia alerta para a necessidade de investigacao e analise detalhada dos aspectos psicossociais, relacionados ao processo de saude/adoecimento dos trabalhadores de enfermagem.OBJECTIVE to evaluate the association between psychological demands, control over the work and the reduction of work ability of nursing professionals. METHOD this cross-sectional study involved 498 nursing professionals of a university hospital in the State of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. Data collection was carried out in 2009 using the Brazilian versions of the Work Ability Index and Job Stress Scale, with logistic regression models used for the data analysis. RESULTS the prevalence of 43.3% for reduced work ability and 29.7% for high-strain in the job (high psychological demand and low control) were observed. The chances for professionals presenting reduced work ability under high-strain were higher and significant when compared to those classified as being under low-strain, even after adjusting for potential confounders, except for age and gender. CONCLUSION a high prevalence of reduced work ability was observed. This evidence indicates the need for investigation and detailed analysis of the psychosocial aspects of the professionals with regard to the health/disease process of nursing professionals.

Articulo parte del project “Recem Doutor” y del trabajo de conclusion de curso “Condicoes de trabalho, dor musculoesqueletica e indice de capacidade para o trabalho da equipe de enfermagem”. Apoyo financiero de la Universidade Federal de Santa Maria, proceso 23081.006225/2009-69 y de la Fundacao de Amparo a Pesquisa do Rio Grande do Sul, proceso no 0903826.OBJECTIVE the aim was to evaluate the association between the intensity of musculoskeletal pain and reduction in work ability among nursing workers. METHOD a cross-sectional study, involving 592 nursing staff in a public university hospital in Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. The Brazilian version of the Finnish questionnaire for calculating Work Ability Index was used, whose score varies from 7 to 49 points. The score was dichotomized as reduced work ability (7 to 36 points) and good/excellent ability (37 to 49 points). The intensity of musculoskeletal pain over the previous week was evaluated, using a numerical pain scale. RESULT 43.3% of the participants had reduced work ability and 48.8% reported strong to unbearable pain. Even after adjusting for potentially confounding factors (function and length of service in the function), the workers who mentioned strong to unbearable pain were four times more likely to be classified in the group with reduced work ability. CONCLUSION A positive association was determined between intensity of musculoskeletal pain and reduction in work ability. It is necessary to adopt intervention measures in the organizational structure, so as to promote/restore work ability.

This was a cross-sectional study that aimed to assess the association between work-related stress according to the Demand-Control Model, and the occurrence of Minor Psychic Disorder (MPD) in nursing workers. The participants were 335 professionals, out of which 245 were nursing technicians, aged predominantly between 20 and 40 years. Data were collected using the Job Stress Scale and the Self-Reporting Questionnaire-20. The analysis was performed using descriptive and analytical statistics. The prevalence of suspected MPD was 20.6%. Workers classified in the quadrants active job and high strain of the Demand-Control Model presented higher potential for developing MPD compared with those classified in the quadrant low strain. In conclusion, stress affects the mental health of workers and the aspects related to high psychological demands and high control still require further insight in order to understand their influence on the disease processes of nursing workers.

The study aimed to evaluate the degree of dependency of elderly inpatients, according to the classification system of patients, and to identify factors related to patient dependency to nursing care. Cross-sectional study with a sample of 161 elderly patients evaluated at the beginning, middle and end of hospitalization, according to the patient classification scale. It was identified a prevalence in the intermediate rating (52.2%); statistically significant association between the ages of 80 to 100 years with the middle and semi-intensive classes; 40% of the elderly classified to the semi-intensive care had death as the outcome. The aging process must determine specific nursing care for this population group, ensuring the quality of care. The study aimed to evaluate the degree of dependency of elderly inpatients, according to the classification system of patients, and to identify factors related to patient dependency to nursing care. Carine Peres Remor; Carla Barroca Cruz; Janete de Souza Urbanetto

OBJECTIVE To analyze fall risk factors in the first 48 hours of hospitalization and to associate them with the occurrence of falls. METHOD Cohort study conducted at a hospital in Porto Alegre/RS, Brazil. A sample of 556 patients from an adult in-patient study population were evaluated within the first 48 hours of hospitalization for factors associated with falls, based on the Morse Fall Scale (MFS) and muscle strength, among others. RESULTS Evidence showed that the classification of high-risk according to the MFS and, more specifically, the items history of falls, ambulatory aid, impaired gait and overestimation of walking ability, were associated with falls during hospitalization (p≤0.005). In addition to these risk factors, reduced muscle strength and visual deficit also contributed to the occurrence of this safety incident CONCLUSION The analysis of fall risk factors in patients evaluated within 48 hours of hospitalization may contribute to minimizing these occurrences and preventing injury.
