Purpose – Application of the horizontal alliance paradigm has particularly relevance to small retailers. It is a powerful mechanism for independents and non‐integrated chain retailers to develop competitive advantage, maintaining and improving their performance. The purpose of this article is to analyse the theory of alliance in the context of the retail sector.Design/methodology/approach – Both quantitative and qualitative research was carried out with horizontal retail alliances in Brazil.Findings – Focusing on the alliances among independents and non‐integrated chain retailers, our discussion covers specifically the following issues: the reasons for forming a strategic alliance in retail; minimum criteria for the alliance activity amongst retailers; steps that managers must take to create a competitive retail alliance; critical core competencies to be developed on the retail alliance; types of retail alliances; and, finally, forms of strategic retail alliances and stages/steps to develop a retail allia...

The analysis of interviews with open-ended questions is a common practice amongst researchers in the field of Management. The difficulty therein is to convert the linguistic data into categories or quantitative values for subsequent statistical treatment. Proposals made to this end generally entail counting lexical occurrences which, since they are founded on previously established meanings, fail to include semantic associations made by interviews. This article aims to present an analysis tool comprising a set of techniques apt to generate linguistic units that can be statistically described, compared, modeled and inferred: the Quantitative Propositional Analysis (QPA). Its main difference from other such methods lies in the choice of a proposition – and not the lexical unit – as analysis unit. We present the application of this method through a study about the international expansion of retail firms. keywords Quantitative propositional analysis, content analysis, correspondence analysis, research methods, research in management. This purpose of this paper was to analyze the process of capital investment (machines and equipment) from the perspective of a multiple case study. From a qualitative and exploratory approach toward the data, a content analysis was used, a method that allowed identifying distinctive features of each unit investigated and making inferences about reasons, causes, and motivations. The results point to a more managerial approach targeted towards attempting to ensure satisfactory operating results in the short term. Hence, most of the gins investigated seem to be more susceptible to the uncertainties of the environment in which they operate since there is a limited consideration of the possibilities that investments might bring to them, as well as an inherent risk management approach; behavioral aspects such latency were verified in investment decisions performed by the managers interviewed.

Purpose To analyze capital budgeting practice in a group of small cotton ginning firms in Brazil. The study aims at describing how investment decision-making in the agribusiness context may be influenced by heuristics and by the business setting. Design/methodology/approach This research adopted an exploratory and qualitative approach in gauging the practice of capital budgeting in Brazilian cotton ginning firms and discussing actual managerial decision-making. Data collection involved interviews with managers of ten different firms and a further content analysis was performed. Findings Results reveal a practical managerial approach aimed at ensuring satisfactory net operating results in the short run. Sophistication in capital budgeting is not considered as essential, as institutional and strategic environment influences directly affect impose high risks. Investment decision-making is highly influenced by managerial experience. Research limitations/implications Because of the chosen research approach, results may lack generalizability. However, in addressing a specific sector in a specific location, one can identify and craft strategies in response to managerial needs more effectively. Practical implications The paper clarifies how heuristics, managerial experience and the institutional context may influence investment decision-making in cotton ginning operations. It also suggests how actions aimed at evaluating risk and improving the screening of investment perspectives could contribute to improve investment decisions. Originality/value The paper provides an in-depth perspective in addressing the practice of capital budgeting in the context of a specific activity and describing key issues related to it.

Brazil is in the global top ten in terms of the percentage of individuals who live alone in relation to the rest of the population; they make up some 10% of the country’s total population. This study, based on micro data from the demographic censuses of 1970, 1980, 1991, and 2000 and aims to characterize the groups into which this segment is divided and uncover general trends. In the eight largest Brazilian capitals, this segment ranges widely in gender, age, income, literacy, and home ownership, whether in the same city over a period of time, or among different cities at the same instant of time. Although diversity is the general rule in the composition of this segment, this study identifies and presents a few broad tendencies: this segment grows at a faster pace than the increase in population in general; there is an increase in the average age of the people composing it (aging); women predominate; and there are more low and high incomes than median incomes. It is important to consider the number of people that live alone and their socio-demographic characterization when addressing issues related to the consumption and production of goods and services and their ramifications.
