The relationship between individualism/collectivism constructs with human values has been previously suggested. However, the studies that try to empirically valiate this relationship are scarce. Thus, this study aimed to identify the human values that best describe the dimensions of these constructs (vertical individualism, horizontal individualism, prothoindividualism, expressive individualism, vertical collectivism and horizontal collectivism). Three hundred and four subjects, members of the general population, as well as high school and undergraduate students, took part in the study. Most of them were female (62.5%), with a mean age of 29 years old. They answered the Mult-Factorial Individualism and Collectivism Scale, and the Basic Values Questionnaire, a part from sociodemographic questions. The results indicated that individualism may be best characterized by personal values, while the collectivism expresses an emphasis on social values. Regarding specific dimensions of individualism and collectivism, they were differently correlated with certain basic values, allowing to identify specific types of this specific social orientation. These results were discussed based on Cross-Cultural Social Psychology literature, showing their importance for understanding the individualism and collectivism constructs.

This work has the objective of discussing the perspectives and challenges of the vocational orientation process (VO) towards the XXI century. The VO process, helping the individual to find a professional identity, aids on the structuring of his/her personal identity, favoring a life project elaboration. The science and technology development produces accentuated changes in the labor market, and causes its continuous change. The new reality, which is delineated in the Brazilian context, demands that the VO adapts itself to the social changes. Thus, some aspects should be considered and analyzed with the purpose of reaching the effectiveness in VO, among them: the professional’s role that should be aware of the ethical posture which he should assume and the real purpose of VO, that should not just inform about the professions, but it should work the self-knowledge and the question of the choice in itself.

The purpose of the present study was to identify which characteristics of students and schools affect proficiency in Portuguese Language, as well as to verify the existence of differences between Brazilian regions in this respect. The data were analyzed of 33,962 third grade students nessed in 1,661 secondary schools who participated in the 2001 assessment of the SAEB. Among the control variables, socioeconomic status of the school had the strongest contribution to the final model. At least 41% of the school level variance and 14% of the student level variance were explained in the final multilevel model. It can be concluded that the inequality between Brazilian regions in relation to the performance of schools in Portuguese Language is strongly related to the socioeconomic status of the students of the schools. This study aimed to adapt the 10-item Remembered Relationship with Parents (RRP10) scale to the Brazilian context knowing the evidences of its psychometric parameters. Participants were 298 undergraduate students of a private institution from Joao Pessoa (PB - Brazil), mostly females (55.6%) with a mean age of 19 years. They answered four measures, including the RRP10 and demographic questions. Results confirmed the conceptualized bi-factorial structure whose alienation and control factors showed evidences of reliability (composite reliability and internal consistency) and convergent/discriminant validity. In conclusion, according to evidences found in the construct validity, this measure may be properly used in future studies.

This paper aimed to know the value correlates of the internal and external motivations to respond without prejudice against homosexuals. Two studies were performed. In Study 1 participated 234 people from Joao Pessoa, with an average age of 26 years. They answered the Motivations to Respond without Prejudice toward Gays Scale, the Basic Value Survey, and demographic questions. The internal motivation was correlated with suprapersonal (+) and normative (-) subfunctions, meanwhile the external motivation was correlated with existence (+) and normative (+) ones. The Study 2 involved 202 people from the same population, with an average age of 25 years. They answered the same instruments, although considering lesbians as target-group. The internal and external motivations were correlated with the subfunction normative (and +, respectively). In conclusion, the values adequately predicted the motivations to respond without prejudice toward homosexuals, being these findings discussed based on the dual model of values.

Objective: To develop a tool for assessing the adherence of women performing the cytological examination of the cervix. Method: exploratory, descriptive with quantitative approach, which followed four steps for the construction of the instrument. Held between May and July 2015, using a sample of 384 women attending health facilities in Joao Pessoa city family. Data were analyzed by applying factor analysis and then correspondence analysis. Results: Scores were calculated from the influential factors reported by these women to perform the cytological examination, and then these scores were associated with the frequency of the examination. As for frequency, 37% performed annually, 25.1% every two years and 20.5% every six months, associated between the low and medium scores. While the high score was associated with a lower frequency, corresponding to 1.3% of those who underwent the test every three years and 15.9% who said they have set periods for their realization. Conclusion: The difficulties for not performing the examination, worse adherence to these women that health care, requiring effective interventions of professionals to minimize these barriers.
