This study aimed to check if a Decision Support System (DSS) reproduces the process of human decision. For this, we used the fundamental elements of the Saatys (1991) Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP), which allows up to five categories of analysis. Accordingly, through a laboratory experiment enacted the task of choosing a notebook in two different ways: with the aid of a DSS; and without the aid of the system, and only the individuals mind to guide the decision while using a think aloud protocol. The results showed significant differences for four of the five categories of analysis. Through hypothesis testing, the only category that had no significant difference in both tasks was the order of choice criteria. Regarding the other categories, statistical evidence did not support the idea that the processes are similar, even if the final decision was the same. For this reason, this studys hypothesis was not confirmed; it is not possible to say that a DSS reproduces the human decision-making process. Regarding the conduct of the decision-maker concerning options for finding information, the process is similar in both tasks, since the decision-maker sought information according to criteria.

Simulation based on system dynamics to evaluate scenarios about the generation and disposal of municipal solid waste

Eugênio de Oliveira Simonetto; Mauri Leodir Löbler

Solid waste management is a topic that has been drawing the attention of researches in operational research (OR) and system modeling in the last years. This article presents the development, validation and experimentation of simulation model using systems dynamics methodology, which allows users and managers to evaluate and analyze scenarios about the generation and disposal of urban solid waste. The developed model takes into account the following rates and information: rate of population natural increase (births and deaths), percentage of urban solid waste sent to each type of final disposal and the quantity of waste generated per inhabitant. The simulated scenarios take into account three distinct situations: (a) current scenario with varying rates, (b) current scenario with static rates, and (c) scenario with similar rates of the Netherlands. The model’s validation was developed through the analysis of future scenarios for a municipality in Brazil’s Southern. For the system modeling and development, Vensim - Ventana systems was used. With the generated results, the area managers may, in advance, evaluate and decide possible ways for improvements or adjustments in the management of municipal solid waste.

Strategic Orientation Towards Sustainable Innovation: A Case Study in a Brazilian University

Mauri Leodir Löbler; Beloni Gomes da Silva; Daniela Maria Pozzobon; Clandia Maffini Gomes

The technological development that results from innovation can lead to considerable environmental impact. Yet, companies and other stakeholders have not done enough to develop strategies for minimizing waste management. The present study contributes to research in this area, by empirically examining the link between the management of technological innovation and sustainability. A case study was carried out to examine the extent to which there is strategic orientation towards both technological innovation and sustainability in a large public university in Brazil. The results show the importance of integrating sustainability activities within the organisation’s corporate strategy: although the researched organisation had sufficient theoretical knowledge about waste management, the lack of an integrated strategy led to uncoordinated attempts at recycling within the university.

This work attempts to explore Cognition and its transversality with Information Systems (IS) through an analysis of major international journals in order to demonstrate how these fields connect with each other. The most important journals from the IS fi eld were analyzed for their Impact Factor (ISI). Altogether, seven journals were selected. After identifying the journals, the titles of the articles (issued between September 2002 and December 2007) were selected for the following words: cognition, cognitive or information processing. 21 papers were examined. The results indicated that there is a predominance of experiments as a research method, demonstrating its validity for cognitive studies. Concerning the target public of these studies people related to organizations predominated, followed by university students; it was observed that few studies focus on the general population, demonstrating the diffi culty of carrying out cognitive studies in macro-sociological environments. It was also noticed that there is no specifi c approach used in these studies, the use of Information Processing Theory prevailed.

The aim of this work is to identify and evaluate publications on the topic economy of solidarity. Thus, we seek to understand the status of the issue through a process of organization, classification and analysis of a set of bibliometric data and information. Research on economy of solidarity was established based on publications in journals of Scielo and Spell. We found 93 articles published on the topic in 13 years of analysis (2001-2013). With the recommendations contained in these agendas, we analyzed the progress made by research showing the evolution of publications with the increase or decrease of their quantity each year, the main authors and the networks of relationships between them. The analysis criteria used were the titles and abstracts of all the published articles. Articles that were evaluated showed that the publications are coming from different groups of research on the topic; however, there is a need for periodicals on economy of solidarity. The aim of this work is to identify and evaluate publications on the topic economy of solidarity. USO DE UM SISTEMA DE INFORMAÇÃO EM UMA INSTITUIÇÃO PÚBLICA um estudo de caso

Eliete dos Reis; Mauri Leodir Löbler; Simone Alves Pacheco de Campos; Márcio Sampedro Ramos

As a result of technological advances and the speed at which information is processed, every moment society starts to count on new technologies developed for the purpose of making the work of individuals easier. Concerning this scenario, this study had the objective to identify the factors which explain the use of a managerial information system from the technology acceptance models, TAM and TTF, considered a consensus in the literature about the theme. Thus, a research of qualitative and descriptive approach was conducted by means of these models which, in most cases, are applied in quantitative analysis. Relating to the method for carrying out this research, a case study was used in a public institution. The analysis of the results which were obtained showed that all the factors evaluated, that is, noticeable utility, facility of use, intention of use and adjustment of technology to task were relevant to explain the use of the system being studied. In this way, it is noticed that the use of an Information System is not only related to the adjustment between task and technology, or to the individuals’ behavior and attitude toward the systems, but also to the combination of these factors (Klopping & McKinney, 2004).
