The aim of this quantitative, descriptive, transversal study was to characterize drug use among students in the second year of the Nursing Degree course. The sample of 119 students answered a questionnaire divided into: general information, sociodemographic, economic, personal, familiar, sociocultural and drug usage. The study showed that students possess factors that protect them from drug usage and the acquisition of drug habits; but that they also have risk factors which must be taken into consideration in prevention programs, such as unhealthy life styles or drug abusage in people close to them (family, friends or classmates). We found that the profile of drugs used, containing both legal and illegal drugs, was similar to those in the national and international context. It is important to emphasize that even though the consumption of alcohol and tobacco occupy the highest places, in the student environment as well as nationally, these are not considered as problematic as the illegal drugs.

The aim of this study was to characterize the relationships of students of the Faculty of Medical Sciences of UNAN León, with licit and illicit drugs. This was accomplished by means of a traversal, descriptive study carried out in the year 2008 in the City of León, Nicaragua. The SAMSHA (Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration) questionnaire, adapted for the Nicaraguan context, was applied anonymously. The questionnaire was completed by a total of 954 students, between 17 and 35 years old, of both sexes. It was found that 52.6% of the students used alcohol, 25.3% tobacco, 48.7% medication and 2.6% cocaine. It is necessary to develop other studies to guide prevention and intervention in the university context.

A study of perinatal morbidity and mortality in 9 maternity hospitals in Brazil includes data from 13130 deliveries. Among them 12782 were live births 217 stillbirths and 131 miscarriages. The overall perinatal mortality rate was 35.2%; and ranged from 19.1% to 58.5% among the hospitals studied. Low birthweight infants accounted for 11.1% of all live births a rather high figure compared to countries such as Japan China the US and Canada. A notable finding was the high incidence of cesarean deliveries which represented 30.2% of the total. A significant proportion of these were considered to be elective rather than justified on medical grounds (health of the mother or the fetus). No diagnosis was given in 65.6% of the cases. The incidence of hypertension preeclampsia and eclampsia were higher than anticipated. The maternal death rate was 6.3/10000 live births. The latter is high compared to that of the municipality of Sao Paulo (3.8/10000) and the state of Sao Paulo (4.7/10000) in 1982. These data suggest areas for future research.

Objective This study aimed to compare nurses’ knowledge and opinion about depression . Method Sample consisted of 101 nurses in the basic health care network in two cities in the state of SA£o Paulo (Brazil). Subjects answered two questionnaires presented by WHO about knowledge and viewpoints regarding depression. Projects were approved by the Ethics Committee. Results The profile reveals that graduation time of Group A (RibeirA£o Preto), with 28 subjects, is longer than Group B (SA£o Jose do Rio Preto), with 73 subjects, and work mobility is higher for Group A. There were significative differences between the two groups (T= 0,012 and T=0, 666) in these questions. Group B showed greater interest in mental health. No significant differences occurred between the two groups, neither in relation to the knowledge nor in their opinion about depression (Med 7,0 and 7,3). Nevertheless, it was observed lack of specific knowledge, need of updating, lack of experience and unawareness of the importance of their therapeutic role for depressed patients. C onclusions There are differences in the profile of the two groups; however, there are no significant differences in their knowledge and opinion about depression. In both groups deficit of knowledge and unawareness of nurses about importance of their therapeutic role in depression is observed.

The commercial release of genetically modified crops (GM crops) is an issue of discussion and controversy among different sectors of civil society and experts in the environmental area in relation to its cultivation on a commercial scale, given the potential social, environmental and economic impacts that may ensue over time. This paper examines the issue through questionnaires together with the various actors involved directly or indirectly to the subject, to detect the existing views on the commercial release of GM crops in Brazil. The results show the diversity of opinion among the agents interviewed, but converge to a common need for revision of the Brazilian regulatory model of GM crops with regard to its institutional aspects and the environmental tools used for evaluation prior the commercial release.
