Sex trade among men: negotiating sex, bodies and identity categories

Murilo dos Santos Moscheta; Sheila McNamee; Manoel Antônio dos Santos

Commercial sex is a marginalized and highly stigmatized activity in Brazilian culture. In this article we aim at investigating the discursive strategies used by young men who trade sex in order to resist stigmatization and social exclusion. We interviewed 24 young men who trade sex in a medium sized city in Brazil. Discursive strategies used by the interviewees to avoid social stigma could be summarized as (1) a reduction of sexual activity to its commercial sense by employing a conceptualization of masculinity that focuses on moral values and disregards sexual intercourse, (2) an emphasis on the anatomic characteristics as a criterion to delimit sexual identification categories, and (3) a shifting of sexual systems from one based on sexual object choice to one based on sexual aim. The discussion highlights that the interviewees were actively negotiating with normative assumptions of sexuality and thus producing either its subversion or conservation.

Grupos de apoio para homens com câncer de próstata: revisão integrativa da literatura

Murilo dos Santos Moscheta; Manoel Antônio dos Santos

This article is an integrative literature review to analyze the contribution of national and international studies examining the use of psychological support groups as a care strategy for patients diagnosed with prostate cancer. The electronic databases consulted were: LILACS, MedLine and PsycINFO, over a period of 20 years (1989-2009) with pre-defined criteria for inclusion. Eleven studies were selected, and based on their contributions some considerations are presented regarding the factors that favor male participation in the support groups and the potential benefits of such participation; as well as their main concerns and the influence of gender identity in the process of coping with illness. Furthermore, studies suggest some models of group intervention, along with orientation for the coordinators which emphasize the importance of these groups as an effective strategy to aid in the process of coping of prostate cancer patients.

Marcos Vinicius do Amaral Apóstolo; Murilo dos Santos Moscheta; Laura Vilela e Souza

Considering the success of the Project Public Conversations (PCP, in Portuguese) in the proposition of conversations between people with opposing views on controversial issues, we aimed to understand the meanings produced with participants from PCP meetings on their participation in the conversation about homophobia and same sex marriage. Two meetings on the criminalization of homophobia and two on same sex marriage were performed. The social constructionist discourse sustained this search. Different data production strategies were used: feedback form in the post-group; individual interviews in postgroup and after a year and a half of participation in the meeting. These strategies were useful for the improvement of the intervention considering its capacity to produce rich meanings about the participation in the meeting, the conversation structure, the posture of the facilitators, arresting moments of the meeting, suggestions for changes and effects of the conversation over time.

Murilo dos Santos Moscheta; Laura Vilela e Souza; Manoel Antônio dos Santos

The aim of this study was to encourage the development of resources to improve health care for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender service users. Dialogues between health professionals and lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender service users (inspired by the Public Conversations Project) highlighted the need (a) to improve communication between users and health professionals; (b) to question what constitutes an expert on lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender care; (c) to reconfigure rigid notions about sexual identity; (d) to deconstruct the association between sexually transmitted diseases and lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender service users; and (e) to adopt a less judgemental attitude towards lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people during hospital admissions.

Health 2.0: Relational Resources for the Development of Quality in Healthcare.

Celiane Camargo-Borges; Murilo dos Santos Moscheta

Traditional approaches in healthcare have been challenged giving way to broader forms of users’ participation in treatment. In this article we present the Health 2.0 movement as an example of relational and participatory practices in healthcare. Health 2.0 is an approach in which participation is the major aim, aspiring to reshape the system into more collaborative and less hierarchical relationships. We offer two illustrations in order to discuss how Health 2.0 is related and can contribute to a positive uptake of patient’s knowledge, which implies challenging healthcare practices exclusively focused on scientific expertise. In contrast, the illustrations we discuss focus on relations and cultural practices, searching for responsive and context-sensitive interventions, entertaining multiple views and allowing space for creativity. Finally we introduce two relational resources to contribute with the development and sustainability of Health 2.0 practices: Relational being and edge of fluidity. Those are resources aiming to engage professionals in a type of conversation with their clients, which is different from the hierarchical, linear and fact-oriented approach. This conversation aims at creating a space where the voices of all involved are welcomed, raising different opinions and points of view, bringing up new light and possibilities to the problem being investigated. These resources may be useful for those who are interested in improving quality in healthcare by investing in collaboration, contextual sensitivity and relational engagement.
