The present study aimed to evaluate the results of rigid endoscopy and endotracheal tube techniques for collecting tracheobronchic fluid from dogs. Twenty eight erratic or housed dogs, were allocated into to two groups. In group 1, tracheobronchic washing was applied to seven healthy dogs and seven dogs with clinical signs of respiratory disease. In group 2, seven healthy and seven dogs with respiratory disease were submitted to endo-bronchial washing by rigid endoscopy. Using rigid endoscopy, a lower volume was introduced but a higher percentage of washing fluid was recovered. There was no difference regarding the time necessary to perform both techniques. Bacterial counts were higher in samples collected by rigid endoscopy, but there was no difference in total nucleated cell counts from these samples. Thus, the use of rigid endoscopy to collect tracheobronchic fluid was found to be advantageous when compared to the conventional technique using endotracheal tube.

The ligament rupture (LC) is an illness diagnosed in most dogs with joint problems, and the most common cause of degenerative joint disease of the knee joint. This study aimed to evaluate clinically the action of a polypropylene mesh as the only substitute for cranial cruciate ligament and flow of dogs, highlighting features of the technique proposed here. It was used 20 dogs which underwent unilateral desmotomy cranial and caudal LC. Twenty-one days after the desmotomy, all were treated surgically by the technique of open reduction, with implantation of polypropylene replacing only the cranial LC. The proposed technique has shown rapid implementation and low soft tissue dissection, early return to ambulation, adequate strength of the implant without associated external immobilization and absence of articular reaction until 90 days after surgery.

This study aimed at comparing the inflammatory response and the oxydative profile of the conventional ovarysalpingohysterectomy (OSH) technique to Totally Natural Orifice Transluminal Endoscopic Surgery (NOTES) and Hybrid NOTES. Group of fifteen female dogs was used for each technique. Blood samples were taken before the surgical procedure (basal) and 3, 6, 12, 24, 48 and 72h postoperative. The catalase activity was increased in the three studied groups. Nevertheless, lipid peroxidation, measured by TBARS (thiobarbituric acid reactive substances) levels, was higher in the conventional group and almost indistinguishable in the total NOTES group. In the three analyzed groups, both butyrylcholinesterase and acetylcholinesterase activities were increased as well as the neutrophil counts during the first post-surgical hours. It is possible to conclude that systemic inflammation occurs in a similar way in the three operative techniques; however, total NOTES technique presents lower levels of cellular oxidative damage, particularly if compared to the conventional approach.

The acquired esophageal stenosis usually occurs due to a severe esophagitis, resulting in the healing process with proliferation off ibrous tissue. Is gastroesophageal refluxin anesthetized animals among the reasons of this disease. This paper reports a case of esophageal luminal endoscopic dilations associated with intralesional triamcinolone in a bitch with esophageal strictures. A mongrel canines hows regurgitation and progressive weight loss. These signs appeared after elective laparoscopic OVH performed, where the patient had part of regurgitation during surgery. Based on clinical and endoscopic findings it was possible to diagnostic stenosis in the final third of the cervical esophagus. The treatment was done with esophageal dilations and intraluminnal triamcinolone administration. This procedure was repeated once a week for four weeks. The 15th dilatation occurred 14 days after the 14th. The patient was discharged after seven days of the final dilatation with no more regurgitation, even when feeding dry kibble within o incline. We concluded that the esophageal dilation associated with in tralesional triamcinolone were effective esophageal strictures treatment in this case.

There are many respiratory diseases in small animals, as well as the possibilities of diagnoses, as laboratory and radiographic exams, bronchoalveolar lavage and biopsies. This research aimed at assessing the results of transdiaphragmatic paraxiphoid thoracoscopies in pulmonary biopsies of thirteen clinically healthy dogs. Under general anesthesia, each dog was insufflated with 30ml kg-1 of air in each hemithorax; two trocars were placed between the xiphoid appendix and the costal arch through the diaphragm. An endoscope was introduced by the first portal; while the second portal was used to allow access to the nippers in the biopsy forceps. Then, these nippers were removed and replaced by chest tube drainage. During the procedures, respiratory frequency, heart rate, oxygen saturation, arterial pressure and central venous pressure (CVP), hemogasometric parameters were checked. Within 48 hours after the surgery, drains were or drain was removed, with minimal production of air and/or liquid. In conclusion, this is a fast and safe technique, which is free of trans and post surgical complications, thus allowing the collection of sufficient material for pulmonary histological evaluation.

Calodium hepaticum has been reported as a parasite of the hepatic parenchyma of many mammal species, but it is not frequent in dogs. The present article aimed to describe two cases of hepatic capillariasis in dogs, diagnosed in a period of one month, in e Santa Maria city, Rio Grande do Sul state, Brazil . The first dog presented clinical sintomathology of cardiac insufficiency and Calodium hepaticum eggs were occasionally found by histopathological examination of the liver. The second animal presented icteric mucous membranes and ascites. The hemogram revealed non-regenerative anaemia and in the biochemistry serum were observed elevation of alkaline phosphatase, alanina aminotransferase and hypoalbuminemia. The cavitary liquid analysis was compatible with modified transudate. In the histopathological examination, numerous bioperculated eggs of Calodium hepaticum were observed aleatorily distributed in the hepatic parenchyma, with granulomatous and fibrous reaction adjacent to the eggs. The occurrence of two cases in a short period of time suggests that other dogs may be infected and requires a rodent population control.

This research describes the cyst resection of the prostate, perineal hernia and laparoscopic criptorquidectomia of a Collie dog, which showed clinical signs of recurrence after conventional hernia surgery. By mean three retroumbilical portals,an intraabdominal testicle was located through laparoscopic surgery. It was removed after the application of titanium clips in mesorquio and pots testicules. A prostate cyst was noticed that was drained by puncture with a transparietal needle. An incision was made in the wall and omentopexia of the cystic cavity was performed. In the evaluation of the pelvic cavity, it was found that the hernial defect was small and could be managed by laparoscopy. An intracorporeal suturing pattern was applied which covered the coccygeal muscle and lifted the anus. The entire procedure took about 140 minutes, with no complications. It was concluded that laparoscopic surgery can be used to treat prostate cysts and the perineal hernia of dogs.

This report describes the diagnosis and the therapeutic conduct applied to the cases of subcutaneous dermatomycosis and mycotic keratitis caused by Exophiala sp in a one and a half year-old dog. The clinical signs included alopecia, crusts, dispigmentation, ulcerations in the nose and superficial bilateral keratitis in the corner of the eyes. In the fungal cultures, Exophiala sp was isolated and the microscopic analysis revealed characteristics of fungal dermatitis. Systemic therapy with itraconazole evidenced remission of clinical signs. The realization of fungal cultures and cutaneous biopsy are efficient complementary procedures in the diagnosis of dermatomycosis and that the usage of oral itraconazole can be effective in the treatment of fungal dermatitis and mycotic keratitis caused by Exophiala sp in dogs.
