Information support as an element for advising parents of preterm infants: a guide for development follow-up services during the first year of life Introduction: The literature shows that preterm infants are at high risk of biological and psychological disorders and consequently require a higher level of care than is provided for full-term infants. Objective: To draw up a guide advising on development follow-up during the first year of life, for parents who attend a child development follow-up service. Method: The inclusion criteria were that participants should be parents of preterm infants with a corrected age between zero and six months that did not present neurological diseases and did not require physiotherapeutic intervention. This study was of qualitative nature. Data collection was by means of direct observation and interviews with mothers and with the professionals at this infant development follow-up service. The guide was produced based on analysis of the observations on attendance at the service, frequency of responses in the interviews with professionals and mothers regarding needs and doubts about handling and caring for infants, and associations with the literature. Results: A guide was produced containing information on infant development, divided into the first four trimesters of life. It draws attention to the importance of calculating corrected ages in order to adequately follow up development markers. Conclusions: This guide may be used by a variety of health professionals and by professionals who develop educational activities for parents.

Grupo de mães de bebês prematuros hospitalizados: experiência de intervenção de Terapia Ocupacional no contexto hospitalar

The hospitalization of newborns implies fragility for the infants and their families, because they are exposed to the stress and tensions of this delicate moment. The support offered to the family, especially to mothers of hospitalized infants, may reflect in the future care provided to these children, strengthening the bond and creating a favorable environment for their healthy development. The objective of this study is to report the experience of occupational therapy in a group of mothers of hospitalized neonates. The aim of this activity was to provide information and guidance on the care and interaction of these mothers with their hospitalized babies. This practice was developed through an Extension Project in Occupational Therapy carried out in a hospital of a countryside city of the state of São Paulo. The Group of Mothers was joined weekly, and dynamics of artisanal, plastic and artistic activities were offered based on the demands observed or reported verbally by the mothers in meetings at the baby nursery before the group was joined. As a result of these group meetings, improvement of the emotional condition of the mothers was observed in the day they participated in the group. We believe that this project can not only facilitate the access to information and guidance to this population, but also minimize the stress experienced by families in the hospital context, which is strange and adverse to a natural birth condition.

An analysis and description is given for the possible reasons why occupational therapy is seen as a female profession. An analytical narrative-style literature review is offered in conjunction with qualitative data analysis. The entry of women to the workplace was shrouded in stereotypes associated with the female gender, determining typically female professions. The stereotypes of skill in caregiving and tasks that required fine motor skills, kindness, and patience were the qualities required for the first occupational therapists and determined the gendered nature of the profession. Changes in gender stereotypes are today taking place in a context of debates, and this discussion could help garner greater recognition and value for the profession.

Daily life and maternal mourning: A pilot study

Abstract This study aimed to understand, through the bias of everyday life, the phenomenon of maternal mourning. It is a qualitative pilot study on three bereaved mothers. Semi-structured interviews were used for data collection and content analysis was performed using typical categories of daily life. It was possible to observe significant changes in the mothers’ daily lives after their children’s deaths; however, they created strategies that minimized such impacts. Losing a child leads to reconstructing one’s own history and identity. It is believed that daily life is an important bias, and thus its study could help us understand this phenomenon.
