The aim of this paper is to refine, from a configurational perspective, the understanding of causal conditions underlying performance differences between new academic technology-based firms. Qualitative comparative analysis (QCA), a research strategy conceived to investigate parsimonious configurations that explain a given result of interest in small-N populations, was adopted as the methodological approach. The analyses were performed using a database related to 81 Brazilian academic spin-offs, pre-incubated by a governmental innovation promotion program. Based on the resultant configurations, parsimonious sets of variables for explaining the initial performance of these new ventures were obtained. Complementary findings and their respective implications are also discussed.

The retail of appliances represents one of the major economic sectors in Brazil. This is an industry highly competitive and concentrated, and the top retailers normally use advertising as communication strategy and sales promotion, investing large amounts of capital in their campaigns. However, the identification of the executional elements that constitutes television advertising and its impact on the evaluation of quality of advertisements and on the image of the chain stores, as well as the impact on purchase intentions and word of mouth communication on consumer remains unknown. With the purpose to understand these relationships, this study had two phases. The first one was qualitative and the second phase was quantitative. In the qualitative phase, we did semiotic analyzes of the advertisements of the four major retail chains in Brazil, focus groups and in-depth interviews with consumers of appliance stores. In the quantitative phase of the research were conducted two surveys, totaling 1038 valid questionnaires. The results show that television advertisements exert significant influence on purchase decision and the perceived image of the retailers. To reach this conclusion, we constructed a scale to measure the construct image and used the ARM model as a basis for measuring the effectiveness of advertising. This revealed the relevance of the executional elements of the advertising - especially those related to aesthetic - as promoters of persuasion. This finding highlights the importance of research to demonstrate that advertisements can constitute a differentiator in the competitive strategies of firms in the market analyzed. , Keywords: Differentiation Strategy.

Cost information can be considered an important tool to benchmarking, planning and control, improving the management of expenditures, mainly in a public institution that are known by having scarce resources. This study was carried out to investigate different modes of governance within Brazilian and British hospitals and the usefulness of cost information in terms of managerial plannig and control. The research was conducted by cross cultural analysis, using several statistical methods for measuring organisation characteristics, seeking to gain a deeper understanding of the profile of both hospitals and respondents. This study showed the dominance of hierarchy and clan as being the most relevant modes of governance in Brazilian and British hospitals. This discussion is relevant considering the congruence level of goals and the ambiguity level of performance measurement. Also, it defines which form of governance is more predominant. The exploratory and quantitative survey methods were used to test the research questions. After conducting a survey using a structured questionnaire, semi-structured interviews with middle managers at chosen case study hospitals were undertaken. In the cases analyzed, it was possible to identify a significant difference between the use of cost information in hospitals, allowing inferences between different modes of governance. The lack of studies about the use of cost information in planning and control regarding public hospitals impedes any other comparison or assessment considering empirical data. One of the objectives of this paper was to generate initial material for future researchers. Besides, the knowledge about the current scenario of the usefulness of cost information mainly in planning and control is relevant when associated with modes of governance.
