The process of quality assurance under open source software development

Atieh Khanjani; Riza Sulaiman

Open Source Software (OSS) is software products available to the public, with its source code to study, change, and improves its design. Open Source Software Development (OSSD) is the process by which open source software is developed within the confines of software engineering life-cycle methods. However when open source used for commercial purpose, then an open source license is required. Open source software is very often developed in a public and collaborative manner. The quality assurance principle under open source software development is an approach to improve software product quality against traditional methods and techniques. Despite the fact that the open source developments have seen remarkable successful in recent years, there are a number of product quality issues and challenges facing the open source development model. Many industries and business sectors are following or using OSSD, since they realize the benefits, but they do have some reservations concerning quality assurance in the form of program code quality, maintenance of the code and its quality, over the life-cycle of the product and third party usage. This paper reviews the literature of the process of the latest quality assurance, under open source software development methods and techniques. The result from this review is to show the process of quality assurance of open source software and that how it can affect the overall quality assurance principal.

The aspects of choosing open source versus closed source

Atieh Khanjani; Riza Sulaiman

Closed source software, is a type of software that is licensed under the exclusive legal right of its owner. It is also purchasable by users by paying amount of money. Open Source Software (OSS) is software available with its source code under an open source license to study and modify the code. Open Source Software Development (OSSD) is the process to develop OSS. Many industries try using OSSD as they see the advantages of open source compared to closed source software development. This research presents the reasons of recently using OSSD model rather than traditional closed source approach. The result is to show the differences between closed source and open source process and how open source can effect on quality through its particular features. It also identifies and addresses the challenges and benefits faced by the users against traditional closed source model.

In this study, by taking full advantage of digital X-ray and computer technology, we have developed a semi-automated procedure to template knee implants, by making use of digital templating method. Using this approach, a software system called OrthoKneeTMhas been designed and developed. The system is to be utilities as a study in the Department of Orthopaedic and Traumatology in medical faculty, UKM (FPUKM). OrthoKneeTMtemplating process employs uses a technique similar to those used by many surgeons, using acetate templates over X-ray films. Using template technique makes it easy to template various implant from every Implant manufacturers who have with a comprehensive database of templates. The templating functionality includes, template (knee) and manufactures templates (Smith & Nephew; and Zimmer). From an image of patient x-ray OrthoKneeTMtemplates help in quickly and easily reads to the approximate template size needed. The visual templating features then allow us quickly review multiple template sizes against the X-ray and thus obtain the nearly precise view of the implant size required. The system can assist by templating on one patient image and will generate reports that can accompany patient notes. The software system was implemented in Visual basic 6.0 Pro using the object-oriented techniques to manage the graphics and objects. The approaches for image scaling will be discussed. Several of measurement in orthopedic diagnosis process have been studied and added in this software as measurement tools features using mathematic theorem and equations. The study compared the results of the semi-automated (using digital templating) method to the conventional method to demonstrate the accuracy of the system.

AN AUTOMATED SIZE RECOGNITION TECHNIQUE FOR ACETABULAR IMPLANT IN TOTAL HIP REPLACEMENT

Azrulhizam Shapi'i; Riza Sulaiman; Mohammad Khatim Hasan; Abdul Yazid Mohd Kassim

Preoperative templating in Total Hip Replacement (THR) is a method to estimate the optimal size and position of the implant. Today, observational (manual) size recognition techniques are still used to find a suitable implant for the patient. Therefore, a digital and automated technique should be developed so that the implant size recognition process can be effectively implemented. For this purpose, we have introduced the new technique for acetabular implant size recognition in THR preoperative planning based on the diameter of acetabulum size. This technique enables the surgeon to recognise a digital acetabular implant size automatically. Ten randomly selected X-rays of unidentified patients were used to test the accuracy and utility of an automated implant size recognition technique. Based on the testing result, the new technique yielded very close results to those obtained by the observational method in nine studies (90%).

Sophia Jamila Zahra; Riza Sulaiman; Anton Satria Prabuwono; Seyed Mostafa Mousavi Kahaki

This paper proposes enhancement technique to introduce a robust descriptor for matching the vertical lines between the two moving images in the context of omnidirectional images. The first step is to propose a new descriptor by using signal entropy to determine the number of circular areas for extracted lines. Then, to enhance the orientation histogram, standard deviation over the entropy value and number of circles is used to determine the number of bins in each area. Evaluation results demonstrates the robustness of the proposed descriptor in dynamic line matching (DLM) in omnidirectional images.
