This work analyzed Brazilian saw timber competitiveness in the international market studying the export variations from 1997 to 1999. Brazil, Canada, USA, Finland and Sweden were analyzed by using the constant-market-share analysis. The analyses showed that the Brazilian export increase during that period is dependent on endogenous factors, contrary to what was observed in the other nations.

The objective of this study was to analyze the concentration of the international market of sawn wood. Concentration and market inequality indexes and structures of market classifications were used. The base of information was the exportation of 154 different nations in 1997 and 1999. A high concentration and inequality of the sawn wood international market and the evolution of these parameters in the analyzed period, was found.

The objective of this study was to conduct an economic evaluation of the multiproducts in Eucalyptus grandis stands through the methods VPL, TIR, BPE and B/C. Two wood use alternatives were considered: single use and multiproducts productions. The sensitivity analysis included variations in the discount rate and land cost. The results showed that the multiproducts alternative presented higher economic feasibility in all the situations examined.

This work aimed to describe, analyze and to compare the relation risk and return of the forest products: sawn wood, planed wood, veneer, plywood and the chemical pulpwood, in function of the behavior of its price, during the three last decades with base in the geometric rate of growth and in the price dispersion. The results indicated that the only products that presented favorable relation to fund raising, during the three decades, were the sawn and planed wood.

This study evaluated the important role the forestry sector plays in the Brazilian economic development by means of the multisector general economic equilibrium models, through the analyses of the Input-Output Matrix (IOM) and the Social Accounting Matrix (SAM). The main sources were the Input-Output Tables (IOT) from the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE), the National Bank of Economic and Social Development (BNDES), from the Brazilian Central Bank (BACEN) and the Brazilian Federal Revenue Office (SRF), for 1995. It was observed that the extra power a productive sector has over another to multiply GDP, jobs, taxes, salaries and trade balance, is as important as contributing for the generation of these indicators, when one extra monetary unit is spent by the final consumers demanding for products of this particular sector. The results showed that forestry is one of the Brazilian economic sectors presenting the greatest multiplying effects for the social-economic indicators. It surpassed other sectors such as the automobilistic electric and electronic, machinery and equipment and chemicals and petroleum industries.

This study aimed to characterize the structure of the international market of particleboard in relationship to its concentration and inequality and to decompose the variations in particleboard export in the major participant countries in terms of world trade growth effect, destination effect and competitiveness effect from 1998 to 2002. Concentration level and inequality favor anti-competitive practices and competitiveness effect, composed by endogenous aspects and market conditions, such as international agreements, do not favor Brazilian export growth.

ABSTRACT: This study characterized the risk-return relationship of sawn wood of different native forest species of the Amazonianarea. Specifically, it was determined the risk-return relationship of Ipe, Jatoba, Macaranduba, Angelim Pedra, Angelim Vermelho andCumaru boards, in 2003-2007 period. The Geometric Growth Rate of prices of the m 3 of boards of each species was admitted asreturn estimative and the variation coefficient as indicative of risk; the estimated values were plotted in dispersion graphics allowinggraphic analysis. It was noticed that their prices float, relatively, in the same way and that Jatoba stands out in attractiveness terms, considering the whole period while the other species presented a coherent relationship among themselves i.e., higher returnsassociated with high risks. Angelim Vermelho and Macaranduba stood out for the attractiveness, in an annual perspective.Key words: Forest economy, native tree species, attractiveness. This study estimated the sawn wood demand price and income elasticity. Specifically it was estimated the price elasticity of sawn wood, the cross price elasticity of wood panels and the income elasticity of Brazilian GDP. A log-log model with correction through outline of the mobile average (MA(1)) was used, adjusted for the period of 1971 to 2006, which showed to be stable, with satisfactory significance levels. It was observed that sawn wood demand is inelastic in relation to price and elastic in relation to income.

The objective of this study was to understand the interactions among the different social actors involved in the forest industrial complex companies. To work with the data obtained, an adaptation of the Likert scale as a measurement mechanism was used, allowing checking the degree of agreement and the importance attributed by the interviewees in relation to the statements described in the questionnaire. The relation with the government, society, customers, suppliers and competitors is considered important, with the search for information being a widespread practice. Government taxes, the bad quality of the road system and insufficient support were the major obstacles to the development of the productive activity.
