The death of Steve Jobs: How the media design fortune from misfortune

Adriana Wilner; Tania Pereira Christopoulos; Mario Aquino Alves; Paulo Cesar Vaz Guimarães

This paper analyses the design of organisational storytelling by the media. Media play essential roles in the process of widespread organisation stories, as well as in the creation and re-creation of them. We specifically propose to identify the elements in media narratives that make storytelling appealing to the public and facilitate the process of the sensemaking of an organisation and its leader. For this purpose, we study the case of media discourse during the episode of the death of Steve Jobs, the leader of one of the most economically valuable companies in the world – Apple. We reach the conclusion that media narrative in this episode seemed pasteurised to preserve a discourse of rational coherence. As ‘germs’ in discourse are eliminated, ambiguous and accidental aspects are neglected, or they gain a deterministic meaning in the plot.

Cesar Akira Yokomizo; Eduardo Henrique Diniz; Tania Pereira Christopoulos

Brazilian banks have developed innovative initiatives to deliver financial services for the low-income population through correspondent banking (CB). Banco Lemon is such an interesting case to be studied because it has implemented a business model based exclusively on CB outlets and its focus was on low-income clients. This paper describes Banco Lemons adoption process of the CB technology to deliver financial services for the low-income population, promoting a historical description of the banks activities, since its creation and up to the year 2009. Eventually, this paper concludes that bill payment initiatives were successful while credit initiatives led to unexpressive outcomes.

The Transferability of Financial Inclusion Models: A Process-Based Approach

Marlei Pozzebon; Tania Pereira Christopoulos; Frédéric Lavoie

Although a number of microfinance initiatives have improved financial inclusion in various regions of developing countries, the transferability of their foundations from one context to another is still a challenge. This study proposes an innovative process-based model targeting the initial stages of the transfer process that links three interconnected categories: local contextual conditions, transferring practices, and initial developmental consequences. The results were produced through a longitudinal study of the implementation of three community development banks on the periphery of Sao Paulo based on a highly successful Brazilian model known as Banco Palmas. In addition to the process-based model, our findings contribute to the microfinance and bottom of the pyramid (BOP) literatures, showing a cross-fertilization that has been insufficiently explored.

Experimental learning enhancing improvisation skills

Tania Pereira Christopoulos; Adriana Wilner; Maria Luisa Trindade Bestetti

Purpose This study aims to present improvisation training and experimentation as an alternative method to deal with unexpected events in which structured processes do not seem to work. Design/methodology/approach Based on the literature of sensemaking and improvisation, the study designs a framework and process model of experimental learning supported by a case study of Brazilian Government agents involved in an experimental process of learning fundamental for interacting with scenarios that require improvisation. Findings This study supports the proposition that improvisation capability can be improved through experimental learning to generate better decision-making in uncertainty. In the case study, the lessons and group experiences of the experimental learning course helped agents to build tools to deal with events that required improvisation. Research limitations/implications This study investigated only one case and recommends that the framework of experimental learning that this study developed be extended to other organizations. Originality/value This study provides a framework and a process model for analyzing complex situations and context that require improvisation and suggests another way for leaders to deal with uncertain scenarios.

Suellen Capurisse; Tania Pereira Christopoulos; Ana Beatriz Padovan

SOCIAL CAPITAL ON TWITTER: THE CASE OF CANDIDATES FOR SÃO PAULO MAYORAL ELECTION

The objective of this study is to analyze how relationships between individuals are structured in a virtual network, Twitter. The analysis is supported by theories of social capital. Twitter accounts of the candidates for Sao Paulo mayoral election, in the year 2012, were analyzed by using the NodeXL program. Quantitative validation by means of the clustering coefficient Clauset, Newman & Moore (2004) was applied. As a result, there were identified - through the topological/quantitative method - intersection points between the social capital and the relationships between individuals in virtual groups on Twitter, explained by reciprocal relations in each network.

Ramon Simões Sérgio; Tania Pereira Christopoulos; Edmir Parada Vasques Prado

Currently, many organizations have used social media as a technology tool to enhance customer relationships and improve their results. The objective of this study is to understand how financial institutions are using social media, specifically Twitter to form the image of their brands. Therefore, we carried out the monitoring of the key and Customer Care Service profiles of the institutions Itau-SAC Unibanco, Santander, Bradesco and Banco do Brazil available and public on the social network Twitter. It was found that there are differences in the behavior of institutions when interacting through SAC profiles and when interacting through key profiles. The study concludes by the need of institutions participating in Twitter social network, in search of a more cohesive image, aligned with the organizations goals.
