This papers object is to discuss the interfaces between the prevention of AIDS and affective-sexual relationships and power in marriage. The subject matter is interpreted in light of the foucaultian thinking of power, and emerged from previous research. The fidelity pact assumed by the man as a commitment to himself and to his wife, contributes to the consideration that the hypothesis of sexual contamination is remote. However, even though distant, the possibility of contracting aids provokes a certain insecurity in the man, who feels dependent on his partners behavior with regard to this issue.

This paper is a reflection which takes as a starting point the process of globalization, establishing a counterpoint between the characteristics of this process and the propositions of the International Conference on Population and Development/1994, aiming at discussing it according to Sen’s (2000, 2001) writings. This comparative analysis indicates that the discussion about equality between the sexes has become more globalized, emphasizing women’s situation in the contemporary world as an obstacle to development, which was reaffirmed in the IV Women’s World Convention in 1995. Subsequently, the paper addresses the advances occurred in Brazil after the implementations of the propositions of the Conference. Finally, it concludes by locating the search of equality between sexes in the fields of rights and opportunities as a social necessity strictly connected to development. Descriptors: globalization; developing countries; women’s rights.
