Work under urgency and emergency and its relation with the health of nursing professionals

The study aimed at understanding work under urgent and emergency conditions and its connection with the health of nursing professionals, who work at an urgency and emergency state service. Descriptive qualitative case study carried out at a state service in Porto Alegre, RS. The collection of data included the analysis of documents from the Institution, the observation of the work dynamics, and the performance of semi-structured interviews with the nursing professionals. The data were submitted to content analysis. One could understand that the health of the nursing professionals is constituted from a working dynamics which is sometimes harmful because it results from an organizational context that carries marks of a state health system with many gaps, however, that allows the meaning of work to be an essential element for the ability to keep the balance and not getting sick in view of the work demands.The study aimed at understanding work under urgent and emergency conditions and its connection with the health of nursing professionals, who work at an urgency and emergency state service. Suporte humanizado no pronto socorro: um desafio para a enfermagem

Este relato de experiencia describe el soporte humanizado desarollado por la enfermera durante la asistencia del paciente en situacion critica de salud, en un Servicio de Emergencia de Porto Alegre (Brasil). El soporte se ha basado en los presupuestos de Jean Watson. La experiencia resulto en momentos de auto-conocimiento y reflexiones acerca de las posibilidades de construccion del proceso humanistico interpersonal en el ambiente de emergencia. Incluso se ha podido identificar algunas limitaciones de la opcion teorica referente a su aplicacion practica.This experience report describes the humanized support given by the nurse in the attendance to patients in eminently critical health situation in the Emergency Hospital of Porto Alegre (Brasil). The proposal was based on Jean Watson theory. The experience gave moments for personal and professional self-knowledge, and thoughts concerning the possibilities of construction of interpersonal humanist process in the emergency environment as well. Yet, it was possible to identify some limitations of the theory options referent to its practical applicability.

Violence, burnout and minor psychiatric disorders in hospital work

OBJETIVO Identificar a violencia sofrida pelos trabalhadores da equipe de saude e a sua associacao com burnout e transtornos psiquicos menores. METODO Estudo transversal, realizado com 269 profissionais da equipe de saude em hospital publico da regiao sul do Brasil. Na coleta de dados foram utilizados o Survey Questionnaire Workplace Violence in the Health Sector, Maslach Inventory Burnout e o Self-Report Questionaire. RESULTADOS A violencia no trabalho acometeu 63,2% dos trabalhadores, prevaleceu no sexo feminino (p=0,001), entre auxiliares/tecnicos de enfermagem (p=0,014) e foi associada aos transtornos psiquicos menores (p<0,05), sendo que a exposicao a diferentes formas de violencia acresceu em 60% as chances desses transtornos (IC95%:1,2-2,1). As tres dimensoes do burnout tambem se associaram a violencia no trabalho (p<0,05). CONCLUSAO Os trabalhadores de saude sofrem violencia em seu ambiente de trabalho e a essa exposicao associam-se os sintomas de burnout e transtornos psiquicos menores.OBJECTIVE Identifying the violence suffered by the health team workers and their association with Burnout and minor psychiatric disorders. RESULTS Workplace violence struck 63.2% of workers, prevailing mostly in women (p = 0.001), among nursing auxiliaries/technicians (p=0.014) and was associated with minor psychiatric disorders (p<0.05), as exposure to different forms of violence increased the chances of these disorders by 60% (CI 95%: 1.2-2.1). The three Burnout dimensions were also associated to violence at work (p<0.05). CONCLUSION Health workers experience violence in the workplace and this exposure is associated with Burnout symptoms and minor psychiatric disorders.

Estratégias de enfrentamento do adoecimento: um estudo sobre o trabalho da enfermagem

Objective: To identify the strategies that nursing staff from an emergency department use to prevent illnesses. Methods: A descriptive qualitative study was used to collect data from nursing staff working in a major public hospital in Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. Data collection involved the retrieval of information from documents of the Institution, observations of nursing work dynamics, and semi-structured interviews. The data were analyzed through content analysis. Results: The findings suggest that the nursing staff faces harmful health conditions in the work environment. Nursing staff showed indifference toward death, coldness toward patients’ needs in the overcrowded waiting room areas, and undesirable attitudes and humor in the work environment. Conclusion: The nursing staff behaviors suggest protective strategies, which warrant the development of interventions that address those behaviors and that promote health in the nursing work environment.

Grupos de discussão virtual: uma proposta para o ensino em enfermagem

Este estudio describe una experiencia docente que tuvo como objetivo proporcionar la interactividad en la tecnica del diario de campo, utilizando un ambiente virtual de aprendizaje. La propuesta educacional se origino en el Entrenamiento de Docencia, vinculado al Programa de Post Graduacion Stricto Sensu en Enfermeria de la Universidad Federal del Rio Grande do Sul (UFRGS) en la cual la academica, bajo la supervision de su Profesora Orientadora, propuso la formacion de grupos de discusion virtual para realizar el diario de campo en una disciplina de la graduacion en enfermeria con el fin de crear la oportunidad de discusion conjunta de las experiencias academicas en el campo de la practica. Los profesores de la disciplina en la cual la propuesta fue desarrollada tambien estuvieron inseridos en las actividades. La tecnologia virtual torno dinamica la tecnica de diario de campo, permitiendo el cambio de experiencias entre los academicos, el profesor y la estudiante, bien como momentos de reflexion y discusion sobre los temas confrontados en la practica de enfermeria.This paper describes a teaching experience aimed at providing interactivity to the technique of field diary by using a virtual learning environment. The educational proposal derives from the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul (UFRGS)s Teaching Training Program of the Stricto Sensu Post-Graduation Program in Nursing, in which the author, a Masters degree candidate, oriented by her advisor, proposed forming virtual discussion groups in order to write the field diary for an undergraduate discipline in Nursing, with the aim of providing an opportunity for a joint discussion of academic experiences in the realm of practice. The instructors of the discipline in which the proposal was developed also participated in the activities. The virtual technology gave new dynamism to the technique of field diary, making possible an exchange of experiences among the students, the instructor and the author, as well as moments of reflection and discussion regarding the themes faced in the Nursing practice.

Work context, job satisfaction and suffering in primary health care

OBJECTIVE To evaluate the work context, job satisfaction and suffering from the perspective of workers in primary health care. METHOD This cross-sectional study was conducted with 242 employees of a municipality of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, from May to July 2012. The adopted instruments were the Work Context Assessment Scale (EACT) and the Job Satisfaction and Suffering Indicators Scale (EIPST). Research also included descriptive and inferential statistical analysis. RESULTS Organization (91.3%) and work conditions (64%) received the worst scores in terms of context. The indicators of job satisfaction were related to professional achievement (55.8%), freedom of expression (62.4%) and recognition (59.9%). However, 64.5% presented professional exhaustion, which had an inverse association with age and years in the institution (p<0.05). CONCLUSION The workers evaluated their work context as inappropriate and complained of exhaustion, although they claimed their work affords some satisfaction.
