The objective of this trial was to evaluate the effect of monensin in the apparent digestibility of nutrients in diets with different levels of CP. Twenty-five castrated rams were housed in metabolism cages for 20 days and fed diets with 11.4 or 16.5% of CP (% DM) supplemented or not with 28 mg of monensin/kg of DM. Diets contained 65% of signalgrass hay (Brachiaria decumbens) and 35% of concentrate; a diet containing only signal grass hay was also fed. The concentrate of diets with 11.4% CP was composed by corn and urea while that of diets with 16.5% CP was based on corn and soybean meal. A completely randomized block design was used and treatment differences were separated by complete orthogonal contrasts. Although monensin significantly reduced the intakes of DM, OM, CP, EE, TC, NDF and TDN, no differences were observed for apparent digestibility of nutrients. Monensin also reduced fecal excretion of N but the greatest N retention was observed in animals fed diets with no supplementation. Diets with the highest CP levels also had the highest CP intake while those with the lowest CP levels showed greatest intakes of EE and TC. Dietary CP level had no significant effect on nutrient digestibility with the exception of CP and EE, which were higher on animals fed diets with high and low CP contents, respectively. The diet containing only signalgrass hay resulted in the lowest intake and digestibility of nutrients and also led to a negative N balance.

The experiment aimed to evaluate the influence of time of supply of hay in the performance of dairy calves Girolando breed submitted to early weaning at 90 days of life. Sixteen sucking calves were distributed in a completely randomized design. The diets tested were: T1- Concentrate; T2- Concentrate plus hay supplied at 15o day of life; T3- Concentrate plus hay supplied at 30o day of life; T4- Concentrate plus hay supplied at 60o day of life. An alfalfa (Medicago sativa) hay was offered without any grinding. All animals received 4 liters of milk daily, plus water and concentrate ad libitum. Concentrate was available from the 10o day of life. The observed variables were the initial (birth) and weaning body weights; daily weight gain, heights at withers and rump; thoracic perimeter; intake of the dry matter, crude protein and neutral detergent fiber; and feed:gain ratio were also measured. A diet containing only concentrate provided similar performance to diets containing ration plus hay. However, the diet containing ration plus hay from the 15o day of life provided the best ratio revenue/cost.

The objective of this study was to evaluate the influence of the ionophore monensin on the intake, weight gain, feed:gain ratio and withers and croup heights of heifers maintained in feedlot, and also the feeding costs. Twenty eight Holstein heifers were confined individually for 84 days, and fed diets containing 32.84% concentrate (corn grain, soybean meal, urea and mineral mix) and 67.16% corn silage and sugar cane, at the proportion of 1:1 in DM. The ionophore levels added to the concentrate were 0, 14, 28 and 42 mg monensin/kg DM of the offered diet, totaling four experimental diets. The experiment was analyzed as a randomized complete block design with four diets and seven replications. The monensin addition raised the cost of the diets, but the different monensin levels did not influence the dry matter intake, the crude protein and neutral detergent fiber intakes; the average daily gain; the feed:gain ratio; and the withers and croup heights.

The objective this work was to evaluate the intake and physiological behavior of heifers of the Pantaneira (Bos Taurus taurus) breed, feedlot and fed with different types of hay and concentrate, in a ratio in dry matter of 60:40 %, respectively. Fifteen animals, with an average initial weight of 298 kg and 30 months of age, were distributed through completely randomized design in three batches, with five replicates. The hays were: hay of Brachiaria brizantha cv. Piata, hay of Panicum maximum cv. Massai, and hay of leguminous Stylosantes capitata/macrocephala cv. Campo Grande. All diets had similar energy and protein content of 63.3% Total Digestible Nutrients (TDN) and 12.5% Crude Protein (CP) and were fed twice a day, ad libitum. The observations of ingestive behavior and physiology were made in three batteries of 48 hours each, an interval of 28 days, totaling 144 hours. The data were interpreted by analysis of variance and Tukey test. There weren’t influences of forage in feeding times, rumination, sleeping and interacting; efficiencies in feeding and rumination, water intake and excretion in urine and feaces, and all variables are statistically similar. Therefore, the use of either type of hay in the diet is recommended Pantaneiras heifers.

This paper exhibit average values, standard error and Pearson correlations of 10 linear measurements (withers, rump and thorax height; shin and thoracic perimeters; rump and body lengths; opening of ischium; breadth of the rump, and body weight) of 14 heifers Pantaneira breed, as well as a multivariate analysis using principal component analysis (PCA) to reduce the amount of variables that can be kept and used in selection, due to a higher contribution to the total variation. The animals, with 36 months, not pregnant, belong to Nucleus of Cattle Pantaneiros of Aquidauana, University State of Mato Grosso do Sul. The heifers presented measures near the small sized cattle, such as Sindhi and Jersey breeds, with weight of 375±9.95kg. The body weight showed a moderate correlation and significant (P<0.05) with withers (55%) and rump heights (69%) and body length (59%), and high thoracic perimeter (82%). Therefore, by choosing the highest exemplary, of longer and greater rump and thoracic circumference, certainly will be selected the heavier animals. Based on the weight of the measures were needed only 4 PCA with minimum autovalue of 1.0, reaching 83.95% of the cumulative variance. It was extracted 1 characteristic with the highest weight in each PCA, which may be maintained in future studies or screening programs, with a reduction of 60%, thus, indicating the measurements of height and breadth of the rump, thoracic perimeters and length body as being essential to select of animals phenotypically superior.
