METHOD Transversal historical study carried through in Porto Alegre, RS, by analyzing patient records age e60 years old, interned in clinical unities of a university hospital. RESULTS 1665 records were analyzed; the four prevalent NANDA nursing diagnoses--within 62 identified ones--were: Self-Care Deficit--Bathing/Hygiene, Imbalanced Nutrition--Less than Body Requirements, Risk for Infection and Ineffective Breathing Patterns, varying from 14 to 17 days of hospital stay. THE MAIN CARES WERE: aiding bed bath, communicating diet acceptance, implementing routines of care in venous puncture and checking respiratory pattern. CONCLUSION four prevalent ND were identified with the appropriate prescribed care. However, other care could have been established as a priority.

A educação como meio para vencer desafios impostos aos idosos

Margarita Ana Rubin Unicovsky

This article discusses education as a means to face challenges imposed to the elderly by age and by society, thus allowing them to acquire new knowledge and obtain new opportunities to achieve physical and emotional well-being. Educational programmes for the elderly try to address these needs by working with several pedagogical procedures in order to awaken critical awareness in the search for a successful ageing. By means of continued education, these programmes have allowed the elderly to get up-to-date, acquire knowledge and participate in cultural, social, political, and leisure activities.O artigo discute a educacao como meio para vencer os desafios impostos aos idosos pela idade e pela sociedade, propiciando-lhes o aprendizado de novos conhecimentos e oportunidades para buscar seu bem-estar fisico e emocional. Objective: Identify the risk factors that contribute to a NANDA-I nursing diagnosis of risk for frail elderly system. Method: Cross-sectional study with 395 elderly subjects, conducted from November 2010 to January 2013, in a university hospital in South of Brazil. Sociodemographic data were collected and levels of frailty were identified according to the Edmonton Frail Scale. Results: A total of 177 (44.81%) participants were classified as frail. There was a significant association between frailty and being female ( p =0.031), nonwhite ( p =0.008), having no romantic partner ( p =0.014), no schooling ( p =0.001), a monthly income lower than the minimum wage ( p =0.034), and preexisting morbidities for respiratory diseases ( p =0.003) as well as infectious and parasitic diseases ( p =0.040). Diseases of the tracts genitourinary (p = 0.035), respiratory (p = 0.001) and blood (p = 0.035) were the primary reasons for hospitalization. Conclusion: The results contribute to the development and implementation of the nursing diagnosis in the hospital setting. Keywords: Frail elderly. Nursing diagnosis. Aged. Nursing.
