Experimental single-subject research design constitutes an important methodology alternative for issues related to intervention research developed in Special Education. The objective of this study was to identify and characterize theses and dissertations that employed single-subject research design in the Graduate Program of Special Education at the Federal University of Sao Carlos (UFSCar), from the implementation of the referred program, in 1978, up to 2004. Initially, titles, abstracts, and other pre-text elements were scanned in theses and dissertations to identify the ones that employed single-subject research design. Next, information was collected about the characterization of the targeted public, the theme, and methodological procedures: type of design, dependent and independent variables, to be found in the introduction, method, and results of the selected theses and dissertations. The results showed that among the 21 theses and dissertations that employed single-subject design, most used A-B and multiple baseline designs, in a total of 43% and 38%, respectively. The other theses and dissertations (19%) used ABA and multiple probe designs. In conclusion, single-subject research design can effectively demonstrate experimental control and impact of interventions. Their use in Special Education research can minimize the gap in knowledge of this theme.

This article focuses the evaluation of scientific literature in Education published between 2001 and 2007 in two major journals in the field: the Journal of Education (RBE) and the Journal of the History of Education (RBHE). The methodology consisted of selecting and reading the abstracts and full texts of the studies of authors and themes, which were analyzed using the approaches of bibliometric studies and with the aid of historical research with an analytic-descriptive focus. The results showed that the behavior of publication are similar in both journals and the scientific literature in education has its own peculiarities, but it has at its core characteristics of social science research in general, for example, high levels of individual publication, predilection to use as reference books and book chapters, high frequency of scientific communication on national sources, among other features.

Scientific knowledge and digital democracy in Brazil: how to assess public health policy debate with applied Scientometrics

Maria Cristina Piumbato Innocentini Hayashi; Danilo Rothberg; Carlos Roberto Massao Hayashi

We proposed an original research design based on applied Scientometrics and frame analysis to assess how a citation was made to sustain arguments in documents on public health policies subjected to online public consultation from 2003 to 2008 in Brazil. So we built on citation studies to create a new scale to estimate why a scientific work was mentioned in our sample of 278 citations. We found that government branches make citations mainly to value their arguments, not to explain them, and that contributors mainly make citations in such a way that could discourage others from engaging in digital democracy.

Aline Cirelli Coppede; Alyne Kalyane Câmara de Oliveira; Fernanda Duarte Rosa; Maria Cristina Piumbato Innocentini Hayashi

A strategy, which has been proved productive to inclusive education, was put into practice, in an effective way, by the education and health professionals partnership. The occupational therapist (OT) presents, in its formation, characteristics which enable them to frame as important elements in the process of improvement in the school inclusion. It aims to characterize the national scientific production about occupational therapy contributions for school inclusion process, through an exploratory and descriptive search, with a bibliometric approach. The search was performed in the databases BVS, Scielo, Redalyc and periodics Cadernos de Terapia Ocupacional da UFSCar, Revista de Terapia Ocupacional da USP, Revista Brasileira de Educacao Especial e Revista Educacao Especial da UFSM, using the search expressions “occupational therapy”, “school inclusion”, “especial education”, “inclusive education” “school context”, “assistive technology” and “school”. With the aid of software VantagePoint®, the analysis produced indicators: year of publication, major journals when these papers were published, authors who participated in more publications, main topics discuted. Results pointed some characteristics of the literature of the field, highlighting the growing number of publishing in the last two years; publication predominance in occupational therapy journals; small group of authors responsible for the majority of publications, most studies are original, review, exploratory and descriptive, being the most common theme regarding questions about the role of OT in school inclusion processes, these data that characterize the scientific and reveal important contributions of occupational therapy in the context of inclusive education.

Raquel Cristina Pinheiro; Luciana Pizzani; Cláudia Maria Simões Martinez; Maria Cristina Piumbato Innocentini Hayashi

This study aimed to perform bibliometric analysis of scientific literature on evaluation of vision available in the database Lilacs. The research methodology has observed the following steps: review of literature on the evaluation of vision and bibliometrics, collection of data in the database Lilacs, organization, processing and bibliometric analysis of data collected using the software MS Excel. Using the search terms “visual assessment”, “assessment of vision”, “functional assessment of vision”, “visually impaired”, “low vision” and “disorders of vision”, being selected 27 articles. As a results were produced the following indicators: the predominant languages of scientific productions were Portuguese and Spanish, the original article written in co-authorship is the predominant type of publication, the themes discussed were: low vision, visual acuity, amblyopia and glaucoma. It was also noted that not all authors have specifically or on assessments of vision, and proposed the cognitive assessment and quality of life of visually impaired. It is advisable to conduct further research to demonstrate the importance of early assessment of vision in children, to ensure that the intervention, when necessary, take place as soon as possible and prevent the delay caused by visual impairment. It should also ensure that these visual findings are complementary with assessments that characterize situations in which individuals who already have some type of disability can use their vision more effectively
